Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics for acne

antibiotics

Avatar f tn I recently read about a genetic test called AcneDX that tests whether or not oral antibiotics will be an effective acne treatment. My teenaged daughter has moderate acne and tetracycline has been suggested. I'm concerned about giving her a medication that may have side effects and produce an antibiotic resistance later in her life, and it may not even work to clear her acne up. The test sounds like a great way to find out prior to treatment if the antibiotics will help.
Avatar n tn I was on Doxy 100mg for about a month for antimalarial reasons, saw a slight improvement in my skin, and was then prescribed Doxy 50mg for acne indefinitely. I’ve been on this for about 3 weeks. I have definitely noticed fewer pimples, but I still have the odd one here and there. I’ve also been using 10% Benzoyl Peroxide gel which I think has worked wonders. I would like to go off Doxy 50mg to see if it is the Doxy or the Benzoyl which has helped my skin.
Avatar m tn Hi there, Any acne medication takes time to act and it is important to stick to particular regime for significant improvement. You should wash your face with a nonirritating, pH-balanced cleanser to decrease inflammation. Avoid scrubbing the face. Do not pop or pick at pimples. A correct nutritional balance and skin care will be helpful. Drink plenty of water every day. Take 7-8 hours of sleep daily. Have a balanced diet rich in vitamin A, zinc and rich in multivitamins.
Avatar n tn I don't have a history of acne, but recently I 've been breaking out around my hairline, across my forehead, nose and cheeks. The acne is red and very small bumps, as if it was irritaton. I thought it might be an allergic raction to a hair product or new facial cleanser but stopping use of these new things hasn't stopped the situation. I've recently started back at the gym and running and sweating a lot and a co-worker of mine said that this is probably the cause.
Avatar f tn A common treatment for cystic acne is Isotretinoin, which cures most acne in about 90% of patients. In sever cases a course of oral antibiotics are also recommended. After cysts have mostly healed, macules, or "pseudo scars" may form. Macules are red patches of skin, sometimes raised slightly, where cysts used to be, and may resemble cysts in their appearance.
Avatar n tn I get it on my chest, back and face I have went to a derm since I was 18 but it never seemed to really help and I felt like since my acne was mild they never really cared. When I get acne it lasts for multiple weeks or months which is why its so agonizing especially cause afterwards I am left with post acne marks that can last up to a year. It has totally messed up my self confidence and has made me totally insecure.
Avatar m tn I took a treatment with antibiotics called ofloxacin 400 mg for ten days, my tests showed to be sensible to this drug. During the treatment the acne almost vanished but after i stopped it the situation was as bad as always. I don't know what to do next, to take another antibiotics treatment, i heard about vancomicin, or to try an autovaccine, can anyone give me an advice please.
Avatar m tn Hi, I can't go to the student health center until tomorrow and I need some urgent advice. I've had this acne type infection on my chin for a year. I've been to the campus dermatologist once and the nurse twice and have been taking doxy antibiotics and using different topical antibiotic creams but last night an entire huge growth came out and I'm really freaked out about what to do.
Avatar n tn I have had continuing problems with acne and cysts on my buttocks area for approximately 15 years. I have seen multiple physicians regarding the condition, however, all have either treated me only with antibiotics or considered it an allergic reaction of some sort, regardless, none of the treatments have worked. Recently I went to a new dermatologist who diagnosed me with Acne Inversa, however, he stated it was curable and prescribed me Accutane.
Avatar m tn However, for severe nodular or cystic acne, then you may need oral antibiotics for this. As for natural ways to treat acne, I can not give a run down of any natural way that may be deemed effective. Several factors affect acne including genetic factors. Stress and certain food intake also contribute. Avoid eating spicy food and try to use a milder and hypoallergenic cream or body wash. These will be able to help. Acne may sometimes have a dermatitic component.
Avatar n tn This in turn, stimulates bacteria to grow resulting in swelling or inflammation. There are several preparations for acne that are available over the counter, like Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid. You can prevent and treat acne by changing your lifestyle like eating proper diet, getting a good amount of sleep and drink at least eight glasses of water daily. You can also treat acne by cleaning your face regularly, using skincare products, apply antibacterial topical medications.
Avatar n tn A few years ago I had a horrible case of acne and was put on the Doryx pill for 3 weeks, wash with Brevoxyl 2x day, morning Tazorac topical and evening Duac topical. This combination cleared up all of my acne and dark spots in a month !!! So after two months I weened myself off of the topicals. Everything was fine. About 2 years later, I had another bad breakout. I have really oily skin, lots of white and blackheads and acne scarring (dark spots) resulted from these pimples.
Avatar f tn I also have very oily skin and cystic acne. I was taking antibiotics for 7 years but I started having stomach problems and had to stop taking them, and am currently taking spironolactone but it is not entirely effective and I'm not comfortable with all of the risks. My dermatologist suggested PDT acne treatment and told me that it would not bring me out of remission, but I'd like as much input as I can get. Would the side effects of PDT bring me out of remission or is it safe?
