459632 tn?1206391645 Hi brittani25, Since he is having recurrent bleed, he obviously has some lesion inside. Colonoscopy helps to look at the colon only. Upper GI scopy helps to view upto duoedenum only. There is still quite a long part of small intestine that cannot be visulaized by these two procedures. Bleeding can occur from this region also. Some of the options avialable to look at these part are - capsule endoscopy, enteroscopy and barium studies.

Avatar m tn Mom is 81 and has been on Coumadin for 5 yrs. Approx 1 yr ago, she had an upper GI bleed (dark stool) and required several units of blood. She was taken off Coumadin and stroked; symptoms . She was treated within 30 minutes with intravenous TPA, with near 100% recovery. Coumadin was restarted. 11 months later, Mom experienced trace bright red blood with diarrhea. INR/PT within normal range, and blood count was good. She was admitted and diagnosed with colitis.
Avatar f tn Blood test all came back pretty normal, went to restroom there and was just geled blood. They took sample, tested was negative for e coli, etc. Much discomfort in left lower back and abdomen. 2 days after leaving hospital still a lot of blood in stools and pain. Had a colonoscopy 7 months ago. 1 pre cancer polyp removed but everything else was good. What is wrong with me.
Avatar f tn It’s more dull and annoying. A little background. Last month I had a kidney stone and a near fatal upper GI bleed. I passed the kidney stone about 2 weeks ago. I recently, in addition to the pelvic pain started feeling fullness in my bladder. In the last month I’ve had 2 X-Rays and 3 CT scans- one with contrast. Aside from the kidney stone everything was normal including the pelvic area(no mass etc).
Avatar f tn You could have a fissure, bleeding ulcer, polyps or other serious problems. Since you have buring in your stomach it might be a bleeding ulcer so a gastroscopy and/or upper GI may identify the problem.
Avatar m tn The pepto could be the cause of the change in coloration. For now, if you're not having more overt symptoms, keep an eye on the situation.
Avatar n tn My husband was hospitalized for what we believe was an upper GI bleed over 4th of July ---he was vomiting bld, passing tarry stools, etc ---they did an EGD but not the colonoscopy.
Avatar m tn With associated dark coloured vomit, this is likely to be an upper GI bleed. The causes could be infections, parasitic infestations, GI inflammations, gastric/ GI ulcers, oesophageal varices, GI growths/ polyps, diverticulosis, fistulas, fissures, AV malformation, GI ischaemia and necrosis, initial symptom of necrotizing enterocolitis, colon cancer etc. If there are no other associated symptoms, all these reasons would have to be looked into, during an evaluation and ruled out.
Avatar m tn Black tarry stools (melena) are generally a textbook definition of an upper GI bleed. The most common cause is a peptic ulcer. So what's going on in your GF's case? 1. And endoscopy usually only covers the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine connected to the stomach).
Avatar n tn It could be a bleeding ulcer. You need to go get a Upper GI and/or a gastroscopy to find out.
Avatar n tn The occurrence of black/ brown stools is known as melaena and indicates the presence of blood (oxidized haemoglobin) from an upper GI bleed or the presence of a coloring agent like beet root or iron supplements in it. Causes could be infections, inflammation, gastric/ GI ulcers, oesophageal varices, GI growths/ polyps, a-v malformations, varices, diverticulosis, fistulas, fissures, AV malformation, GI ischaemia and necrosis, etc.
Avatar n tn blood in stools, also known as melaena and indicates the presence of blood (oxidized haemoglobin) from an upper GI bleed. Causes could be infections, inflammation, gastric/ GI ulcers, oesophageal varices, GI growths/ polyps, a-v malformations, varices, diverticulosis, fistulas, fissures, AV malformation, GI ischaemia and necrosis, bleeding disorders etc. Without further evaluation it would be difficult to differentiate between the causes.
Avatar f tn I had a bleed last week from my bottom which was a lot of blood. I had not strained in fact I had just woken up! So bleed was for no reason. I do get some small amounts of blood caused by piles but this was a lot! Have a lump to the back of my groin, upper of my thigh, think it a cyst, it the size of a pea. Suffering with knee aches and pains at the moment too also getting constipation. Get the odd lower stomach cramps but this upper one frightened me.
Avatar f tn Hi Welcome to the MedHelp forum! If your stools are dark and you taste blood in mouth and the taste has altered, then your reflux is not under control. Also you have an active GI bleed either in food pipe or stomach or first part of intestine. If neglected, this can turn serious. Omeprazole alone is not helping you. You will need a combination of acid and reflux reducing drugs. Also some life style changes you will need to follow. Avoid heavy meals and eat frequent small meals.
Avatar f tn Im due to go for an upper GI endoscopy in a few weeks time. I had one done over 20 years ago and it was even worse than I imagined and now Im terrified of going through it again. Ive been told I can ask for mild sedation but I had this first time around and it didnt help at all. I just hate the gagging response when the tube is inserted and then trying to pretend its ok during the whole procedure was a nightmare.
Avatar f tn I have a 16 year old daughter that has had severe upper gi pain. We have taken her to drs. they have done ultra sound, xray, blood work, hida scan they even put her on Nexium and the dr cant seem to find out what is wrong. The pain seems to get worse right after she eats. She vomits, she is in scrutiating pain which can last for hours. It doesn't matter what she eats or drinks the pain is always there. They have put her on phenegran and darvecit and the pain still is there.
Avatar m tn I've had endoscophy's on and off treatment. Never felt a thing in either case. Hire a different plumber if the last one hurt. BTW while they're in, have them take a snip of the stomach to evaluate for H. Pylori. Also, if it's time for a colonoscophy, you can have them done at the same time. BTW I read recently that there are more coloscophy mistakes if you schedule right after lunch.
