Prior to my transplant in 2001 my ammonia levels were very high and I had very bad encephalopathy. I wasn't allowed to be left aloe because of the danger I could hurt myself, try to cook and burn the house down, etc. And of course no driving. My grown children had to come and babysit for me when my husband couldn't be at home to watch me. It was much like having dementia. My reason for postig is that I hope your mother is not left aloe with such high ammonia levels.

I think I started this post just to ask if he would excrete ammonia in his urine if his levels were high; it's beginning to appear to me that this is the case. maybe the beers caused you the alcoholic liver disease which lead to signs of liver failure like rise in ammonia.

Hi jd. Not sure if this will help but I asked my Hepatologist at Mayo Clinic about testing for ammonia in the blood on Friday. I have cirrhosis and have never had my blood tested for it. My Hepa stated that you could have let's say 0 levels and have full fledged HE, or score in the 100s and be perfectly fine. There they find the scores unreliable and don't test the blood. On the other hand they only use the test that Hector pointed out the neurophysiatric test.

I started huffing alcohol here recently. Probably this last month or so. At first I just really enjoyed the smell. For my household cleaning I use a 50-50 concoction of 91% rubbing alcohol and ammonia due to its disinfectant properties.
