Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia health

1008841 tn?1293602560 What is your MELD score from your last blood test? Are you compensated or decompensated? If you are compensated, have you talked to your doc about hepatitis C treatment? Cramps in the legs and feet are very common with cirrhosis. You might want to try "Leg Cramps" you can find it at any Walgreens. It seems to work for me. You should ask the hepatologist for Xifaxan. For many people it is more effective in stopping HE flare-ups and has no nasty side-effects like Lactulose.
Avatar m tn Has anyone been told that you have high ammonia levels from Hep-C? If so, please tell me the common side effects and if you use Lactulose for treatment. I am interested in hearing about headaches that you may have from the disease or treatment.
Avatar m tn so I think with enough time one of them will show positive.) - ..But now, my favorite one yet, I smell.. like a kind of ammonia smell. Or urine smell. I've noticed this the past few days and it's even more uncomfortable than the others when around people. Anyway. I know all the other stuff are symptoms, but I havn't been able to find anything about this ammonia body odor. Is this something that occurs or what are the causes of this? I've read it can be a sign of liver or kidney damage.
Avatar m tn Since then I had my first experience with a high ammonia level of 98 in 2014 which put me in the hospital, almost in a coma state, for 5 days. Lactulose, Lasix & Spirolactone were given. After being released, it took a week when I returned to the hospital, now I was put on Xifaxan along with the other three meds. All has been well until Feb. 14, 2016 when it hit me again, ammonia level of 250, survived.
Avatar m tn I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week. Will this be chronis? Is there hope to get it down and keep it down? The test showed a slightly enlarged liver. Could this be caused from spreading fertilizer, coloring my hair and spraying poision? I cut out the protein except for fish, eggs and a few other things. Driking lots more water to flush my system. Any other suggestions.
Avatar m tn Lately I have noticed an ammonia smell after a good run (60 min or so). I have searched the web and found answers from epilepsy and brain tumors to burning muscle for fuel. What is the real answer to this?
Avatar n tn I seriously doubt anyone here can offer you any advice regarding this person’s health based on the info you provided. I’ve personally seen people in late stage liver disease continue for many years; this is information his doctor is going to have to provide based on physical examination, lab results, etc.
Avatar n tn He has high levels of ammonia, which they are treating with lactaluse.Of course it limits his going out,he spends most of the day sleeping or in the bathroom from the medicine.I worry so much.He was the sweetest man I know, now he is extremely depressed, moody, angry, etc. Are there any other treatments on the horizen for Hep C and high ammonia? This is effecting our marriage, because its hard to live with his temper,as much as I try to understand.I have chronic headaches, and I guess we are both a mess.
Avatar n tn At the age of 36 she had to have a complete gastrectomy(entire stomach removed) due to massive polyps. One year ago she started developing high ammonia levels, range from upper 60's to 110. Massive headaches seem to accompany the elevated levels. She has had liver function tests and biopsies for years now and have determined the problem isn't her liver. They prescribed lactulose and Xifaximim(antibiotic given to liver disease patients, might have the spelling wrong).
Avatar n tn Questions in The Hepatitis Forum are being answered by doctors from Henry Ford Health System, consistently ranked one of the best hospitals in America. Subject: Ammonia levels Forum: The Hepatitis Forum I am wondering if ammonia levels are always associated with liver function.
Avatar f tn I started having auditory/visual disturances with headaches in my early teens. Progressively worsened until I finally spoke with my PCP last spring. Referred my to psychiatrist. Ran a barrage of blood work, MRI/MRA, and EEG. Everything was negative except for a nearly zilch B12 level. He diagnosed me with seizure disorder NOS, bipolar disorder NOS, and psychosis NOS. The psychiatrist tried a multitude of meds that either didn't work or caused very unpleasant side effects.
Avatar m tn When these waste products are not expelled from the body, they create the product of ammonia. Too much ammonia can lead to disorientation and swelling of the brain. If your problem is liver related, you will need to go to a gastroenterologist for exam and bloodwork to measure what is in your blood - including ammonia levels and your liver enzymes. I have had a liver biopsy 2 years ago and found out I had the cirrhosis.
Avatar n tn For a few weeks now I've been noticing wafts of what I can only describe as the smell of Ammonia. I cant be sure where the smell is coming from - it's quite obvious if I breath in really deep through my nose a few times. I dont think it;s in my sweat as I run 6k three times a week and my running clothes dont smell all, so I'm assuming the smell is either from my breath, or actually in my sinuses.
1654058 tn?1407162666 " I entered hospital last week w a 14. Leaving w 53 and they gave me an RX for lactulose." 14, 53 for what values? Ammonia should be listed under ammonia on blood test result. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is common for GI bleeding to exacerbate hepatic encephalopathy.
Avatar f tn Ahhh, didn't know the varices and elevated ammonia went hand in hand. I'm a stage 3-4, genotype 1a. So did you have any problem with the treatment because of the varices? Any bleeding at all? I'm still having a problem getting a handle on all of this. We're figuring I could have had this since about 1969 when I had blood transfusions following a car accident and this is the first time any of my labs have been other than normal. No signs of this at all.
Avatar m tn Or are you constipated? Do you have other health issues that could be affecting your ammonia levels? Ammonia is produced when proteins are broken down in the intestines. If the liver is unable to effectively metabolize the ammonia, the levels rise in the blood. Could you be eating too much protein??? What s your typical food during a day? Are you getting your protein from vegetable sources or chicken and fish? You are not eating any red meat, correct?
5611452 tn?1370974704 I just got my ammonia levels back. They are 78. I know that normal is between 11-35. 78 doesn't seem that much higher than 35. I know in some labs just a few numbers off isn't that big of deal, but in other labs it's major. So how bad is 78? Is this a dangerous level? I know my Dr. wants to "up" my Lactulose but when I told the nurse that called that it really shoots up my blood sugars, she has to go back and talk to the Dr. before changing it. Also, this is just my PCP Dr.
Avatar f tn I was taking Nature Throid but discontinued because of a weird side effect- strong ammonia-smelling sweat while exercising. Has anyone heard of that before? I was concerned about my kidneys... And had to wash exercise clothes several time to get rid of the smell. What would cause this?
Avatar f tn Cleared hepC last October with Sovaldi. My ammonia level is 89. ALT and SGOT are around 100. Am taking Miralax TID.Taking opiods and meds, blood pressure meds, depression (Lexapro) and Klonopin for anxiety. I'm seeing a GI doctor. Have gastritis, esophogitis, an slighly enlarged spleen. Any advice? And who is a good transplant doctor in Memphis? I woke twice last night with an intense smell of anesthesia in my nose. I didn't imagine or dream it. It continued long after I woke up.
Avatar n tn My husband's ammonia level is @ 68; 2 weeks ago was @ 60. He is currently taking Lactulose 15 ml twice a day; 2 weeks ago he was lethargic, confused and had extremely poor coordination, was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy. He has dramatically improved but his ammonia level continues to rise. He was advised to increase the lactulose to 30 ml twice a day for 5 days and then resume back to 15 ml twice a day. Is there any other medication for elevated ammonia?
Avatar m tn going through at the least 48 16oz beers. I have noticed somethings and wonder if his health might be in danger. (obviously the drinking is already at a dangerous level) He personality has changed....he seems to not care about things that were important to him before. He has major mood swings....even when not drinking a lot. He can not sleep at night, and complains of having night sweats. When he has time off work...he sleeps all day. His eyes have a yellow tinge after drinking...
Avatar n tn My child has an ammonia level of 57 which is elevated compared to the normal of 47. My son also has a low Carnitine level and is diagnosed with Autism he is 22 months old. He is also "failure to thrive". My question is: How are all these things related to Autism? Could there be some other disorder linked to the autism. What makes a child Failure to thrive. My son has been on Murolex since 2 months old for constipation.
Avatar m tn I am not a drinker and am not going through a detox I do however have diabetes pretty severe and other health problems and nobody can smell ammonia on me but I smell it very strong completely out of the blue many times a day. If anyone can give me advice about this I would appreciate it.
Avatar m tn I'm not sure when this started but every once in awhile I'll get the sinus clearing feeling in my nose and it smells almost like a talc or powder smell mixed with ammonia. I will get it after working out on the treadmill or sometimes just doing simple things around the house. It isn't an everyday thing but a few times a week and it lasts for about 5 minutes or less. It isn't coming off my body but deep in my sinuses. After taking Tylenol I can smell Tylenol in my system.
190885 tn?1333029491 I am not sure of your health status. High ammonia levels can also be caused by... *Reye syndrome. *Heart failure. *Kidney failure. *Severe bleeding from the stomach or intestines. Good luck!
1391695 tn?1298143389 I colored my hair 1x during 13 week treatment, Not sure if it would have been better or worse. It was falling out plenty before, not much more after. Are their studies to show hair falls out more if colored? Or is it an assumption? I didn't do highlights, just covered my gray with brown.
Avatar n tn Ammonia levels Forum: The Hepatitis Forum I am wondering if ammonia levels are always associated with liver function. I am probably somewhat in denial here because I have a husband that is end stage and I am sure that I know what ammonia levels indicate in someone with cirrhosis. Maybe if you can just say the words to me it will help. I had ammonia levels of 50 the first time I was checked. I was experiencing problems with getting lost when I was driving and confused other times.
14315163 tn?1433901017 | He's had numerous episodes of HE where he's been hospitalized with ammonia levels around 100-300, they give extra Lactulose, and within a couple days he's discharged (sometimes he just spent several hours in ER when it was around 100 or below and was then fine). Since that was all it seemed to take, I asked the doctor if he could just take the extra dose himself. He said that was fine and it was manageable... until this month.
Avatar n tn She has been in and out of the hospital for about 2weeks now. On average she goes to the E.R. atleast once or twice a month because her ammonia level gets too high.Last week she went into the E.R. and when I got there her level was so high she didn't even know who I was, she was shakeing real bad and kept repeating the same thing over and over. It was like one minute she was aware of things, and the next she was ''out of it''.
