Common Questions and Answers about Ambien long term

ambien

Avatar f tn s admitted that some of them cause him to haullucinate. I worried about the long term effects to his brain when we do get him off these.
Avatar m tn My dad has been taking Zolpidem for over 3 years and recently I found out Zolpidem is used for treating short term insomnia. I'd like to know if it can be used for long term and if whether there are any medications available which can be used for long term treatment.
Avatar n tn Was the car accident after he stopped the ambien? And if so, how long after? When you say taking in large doses, exactly how many at a time and how often?
Avatar n tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Ambien is only meant to be used for short term use which often results in worsening of insomnia (sometimes worse than it ever was) when trying to come off the medication. Either way to most of the sedatives (sleeping tablets), people develop tolerance, that is they stop working very effectively with time. So, try to develop good sleep hygiene.
Avatar m tn Can this affect my memory (with the amnesia side effects) or will that just be for the 7-8 hours while the drug is in my system? Also are there long term effects of zolpidem? I was instructed in class that zolpidem should only be given for short term around a month. My only other medical issue is mild-moderate tourettes that is managed well.
Avatar m tn I have taken it on and off for 6 months and have had little problems as long as I only use it short term. Using it long term and then stopping has been said to be horrible.
Avatar f tn I feel you might have taken quite few medications for your sleeplessness over years and so want to stop further. Ambien is good choice for treatment of insomnia, but it is intended for short-term use. Elavil/Endep can be tried if you are not comfortable with Ambien and it is a non-addictive drug. Try to relax and plan a healthy sleeping habit on a long-term basis. Avoid coffee/tea, smoking, alcohol and a bulky spicy meal at nights.
Avatar f tn What I found best was a psychopharmocologist because they are medication specialists. The concern your psychiatrist has about Ambien being potentially addictive long term for anyone is a valid one and you can read more about it on the medication website. There are other options as regards sleep aides. One option is Rozerem which is an FDA approved medication that is safe and non addictive and works like melatonin to adjust the sleep cycle.
Avatar n tn While I was in the office, I forgot to ask whether this new drug could interact with the Ambien, so I stopped taking the Ambien until I could see my doctor again. About a month went by in which I did not use Ambien at all. During this time, the abdominal pains gradually lessened over a period of weeks, and eventually disappeared.
1690584 tn?1340297472 HI welcome to the forum the Zmeds are tuff to get off and you do build up a tolerance to them there are several diffent brands out there but they all work the same it may just be time to get off of them they where nere ment for long term use you slowly taper off a little bit at a time and expect some insomnia wile going threw this but if your uping your dose it time to get off good luck and God bless......
Avatar n tn A Harvard study in 2004 demonstrated medications are not the best treatment for insomnia, but rather Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi) is better. CBTi is safe in the long term, is less expensive, has no side effects, and treats insomnia at the root cause instead of just trying to "knock someone out" like medications do. If you go see a sleep doctor in person, CBTi is what they will recommend.
Avatar n tn Hi All! I took ambien a long time ago, made me sleep but terrible headaches!! Last year I briefly tried trazadone. I guess I am just super sensitive but I tried 25 mg and I was extemely dizzy, felt drugged the next til noon. At my pcp's advice I tried for a week, sometime sleeping but still did not like the effect. I have found natural things to work better for me. Have you tried melatonin?? How about l -theanine , chamomille,5 HTP , valerian or such??
Avatar n tn He lost his memory completely and now has terrible problems with visual perception, short term and long term memory among other things. Rehab was long and hard. He has regained his sight, speech and movement but he did not regain his past memory and had to relearn everything. In Dec 2007 (2 1/2 years after the brain injury) his neurologist prescribed Ambien to him hoping it would have similar effects (waking up what appear to be dead brain cells) it has had for coma patients.
202665 tn?1248806733 Ambien is generally meant for short term use. Lunesta can be used long term. Rozerem is another good sleep aide and specifically better than either of those two because it being derived from melatonin adjusts the sleep cycle. Anti-depressents can sometimes set off mania in a person with bipolar so I'd be concerned that's what might be going on but they are sometimes needed.
Avatar n tn Everyone keeps telling me you need rehab to get off ambien is this true?? I have been on it for 2 years on and off. I have trying to cut my dose. Can anyone give me the side effects of discontinuation ?
Avatar f tn So I take ambien 5 to 10 mg at night for sleep and I take tramdol as needed for pain 1-2 50 mg depends on how bad my pain is.
Avatar n tn Before giving it up or starting on other new sleep drugs, it is always better to consult a doctor. I said you earlier also, Ambien is meant for short-term use. It is better to address the aggravating factors or those factors really causing the sleep disturbance, which may be beneficial in long run rather then continuing a drug for months or years. You can also try without medication of getting rid of sleeplessness.
