Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar m tn My wifes orthodontist recommended a consultation with a periodontist prior to him starting the procedure for braces. My wife is a 65 year old in good health who has taken FOSAMAX for 5 1/2 years. She wants to get her teeth straightened. The periodontist has recommended a procedure to reinforce the gums prior to the braces. This has added an additional 6K to the price and about 3 months to the total time to straighten the teeth.
Avatar f tn Zoledronic acid is used only for most extreme cases, and for cancer metastases that are osteoblastic. It effectively wipes out most of patient's osteoclasts, leaving the body unable to dissolve bone tissue that's produced by osteoblasts. I never understood the reasoning behind this in case of bone-filling cancers...
Avatar f tn Common practice among physicians is apparently 800-1000 ius of Vitamin D a day for good health. The single Fosamax pill has 5600 ius of D. Will this one pill suffice for my D intake all week and is it all right to have it all at once instead of single pills every day?
Avatar n tn Aromatase inhibitors would be too much for my system with joint pain and the chance for ostopenia or worse, osteoporosis. As much as I miss my estrogen, I do want it blocked because it fed my cancer and I do not want to have to deal with that again.
Avatar f tn I took my first dose of Alendronate and then experience significant muscle pain for the next 4 days. Does anyone know if I should expect this to happen each time I take it or is it something to happen for the first few times until my body adjusts to the medicine?
Avatar n tn Having an underactive thyroid, a condition called hypothyroidism, does not increase your risk for bone loss and osteoporosis. Taking the amount of thyroid hormone medicine needed to replace what your body’s thyroid is not making does not hurt your bones. *However, taking more thyroid hormone medicine than you need can cause bone loss. An excess of thyroid hormone is harmful to your bones.* This can be caused by an overactive thyroid, a condition called hyperthyroidism.

Even a nutritionist could be of benefit to you. Are you doing weight bearing exercise by the way? This video is helpful. https://health.clevelandclinic.
Avatar m tn The authors examined the effects of high-dose oral alendronate (40 mg daily) for 6 months on 3 adult patients with intractable headache due to fibrous dysplasia of the skull. Each patient had disease processes not amenable to surgery. The patients underwent clinical follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months. Their pain levels were documented at each visit by using a visual analog scale. All 3 patients demonstrated a significant decrease in pain levels and became independent of scheduled analgesics.

Avatar f tn Generally this is used for the immune system -- it is found in highest amounts in colostrum, the first part of our immune building found in breast milk. It is used for other things, sometimes for iron, but still mostly for building the proper bacterial foundation for a strong immune system. Don't see how it will build bone.

The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.

Avatar f tn I presume that you are on prednisones for your severe asthma. If you are worried that using this has damaged your bones, you should speak to your doctor about this. If may be that you need to have calcium and Vitamin D (this helps the body to absorb calcium) replacement. Do not stop taking the prednisones until you speak with your doctor. The damage to your 3 vertebrae may just be coincidental. Make an appointment with your doctor and discuss your concerns with him. Hope you get on OK.
