Avatar m tn In 2011, the agency voiced concerns that taking the drugs long-term may actually make bones weaker and increase the risk of rare but serious side effects such as atypical fractures of the thigh bone, esophageal cancer and osteonecrosis of the jaw, a rare but painful condition in which the jaw bone crumbles. To investigate, the FDA reviewed data from women who had taken the drugs for six to 10 years.
Avatar m tn This week I was given the bad news that I had Esophageal Cancer, squamous cell carcinoma. I am 54 year old male that was a pack a day smoker for almost 40 years. It started a couple of months ago. I couldn't swallow anything, I would try and dislodge food that was stuck down my throat with water. But this would work and sometimes not. It's more of a discomfort than pain. I got myself to the emergency at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa.
1387175 tn?1326400997 Welcome to the gastroenterology community! Prilosec does not increase your risk of getting esophageal cancer. The thing that is causing you to need prilosec causes the increase in risk of esophageal cancer. So whether or not you take prilosec for your problem, doesn't change you risk of developing esophageal cancer. Have you tried dietary changes to see if that helps your GERD enough so that you don't need prilosec. Have you tried H2 blockers?
Avatar f tn I am sorry to know about your husband’s health. Esophageal cancer is a very aggressive cancer. Treatment of stage 4 esophageal cancer usually includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgical removal of the affected part of the esophagus. Unfortunately, once it has spread, especially to places like the liver, long-term survival is difficult. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is the most effective treatment modality for patients with metastatic disease.
Avatar f tn I am concerned about taking mtx and budesonide concurrently as I had steroid induced psychosis when dx with breast cancer Jan 2003. He said I have some serious decisions to make about resection of strictures but need to put on some weight beforehand. Do you think this treatment plan is correct? Was dx with Crohn's 1970, now PanCrohn's Colitis. I am also taking Aromasin for bc.
Avatar f tn I took my first dose of Alendronate and then experience significant muscle pain for the next 4 days. Does anyone know if I should expect this to happen each time I take it or is it something to happen for the first few times until my body adjusts to the medicine?
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar m tn My mom has been diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer. The cancer has spread to the lymph nodes but not to other organs. She is 91 years old. My question is twofold. They recomend radiation therapy. Will this help to improve her quality of life and perhaps extend her life, and I would like to know realistically what her life expectancy is with this diagnosis. This discussion is related to esophageal cancer life expectancy.
Avatar m tn It seems that when I look up symptoms for esophageal cancer, hiatal hernia, and GERD, that they all have the same symptoms with the exception of bleeding (which is late in the cancer stages). Knowing that I have a hiatal hernia and GERD, how might I get a clue from symptoms if I were developing esophageal cancer without getting a regular endoscope?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed last year with stage IIIB breast cancer. I have already gone through the chemo treatments - bilateral masectomy, radiation - finishing up in a few months with Herceptin. I started to take Tamoxifen a couple of months ago - I've been experiencing bad headaches - hot flashes (these are to be expected).

My father was admitted and was seen by gen Surgeon in the a.m. Gen Surgeon the did a Endoscopy with biopsy of 2 diff areas of the mass both of which were neg for cancer. Avatar f tn I have been living with GERD since birth for sixteen years, i have been in and out of the hospital and had more tests done to me then you can imagine. Most of my summers have been in Driscol's Children Hospital in Corpus Christi Tx. I am on a strict diet, not eating anything spicy or late at night. I don't eat anything with dairy since i'm lactose intolerant, i am allergic to almost everything edible and my dad is diabetic so my mothet and i eat practically his diet.
Avatar f tn Does esophageal cancer cause white phlegm with tiny bubbles?
Avatar f tn Personally I think he should have a gastroscopy to make sure that he doesn't have an Esophageal problem and they will also check the different sphincters to see if they are working properly. It wouldn't hurt to have an allergy check but if he hasn't had a gastro and he is over 50 then I would have it checked as well as have a colonoscopy. The phlegm could be from the banana so stop getting bananas for awhile and see if that helps.
Avatar n tn Complete eradication was achieved in 77% of 48 patients, with a 10% rate of major complications including hemorrhage, esophageal stricture, and esophageal perforation. Although these observations indicate that high-power APC can eradicate Barrett's epithelium in some patients, it is not clear that this expensive and hazardous therapy conveys any clinical benefit.
Avatar n tn I went to the doctor to see if anything was wrong but he felt there was really no reason to do any invasive tests. I have started to read about pancreatic cancer and liver cancer and I am just wondering if there was any possibility of this happening to someone my age?
Avatar f tn Hi :) Calm down we all here understand what you are gointh through.I am having this ''doom'' feeling. As someone here sais...fear is not a fact.Because you fear of cancer it doesen't mean that you do have cancer. If you search the internet cancer has a billion of starting symptoms...inculing...headaches.You dont fear of cancer everytime you have a headache. The most possible is that you dont have anything serious. Its a good thing you are looking up for it.
1384238 tn?1286028762 says esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, regular ulcers can all do this. Plus she says the blood from esophageal cancer is usually found in stool and my stool is still normal in color. I am still so scared (can't stop shaking) and the waiting for the doc appt is probably not making any of this easier. Thanks for taking time out of your day to answer. I'm not young, but I'm not old either and I'm not ready for this!
Avatar m tn Maybe I'm in the wrong forum to be asking his, but for the past 3 weeks or so, I've had this annoying tickle / irritation in my throat to the point of where it feels like I might have to cough, but I don't actually have to cough. I'm 30 years old, no history of asthma or allergies (other than dust / mold) and was a very light smoker for a few years. I have had post nasal drip for a long time and I know what that felt like.
Avatar m tn The authors examined the effects of high-dose oral alendronate (40 mg daily) for 6 months on 3 adult patients with intractable headache due to fibrous dysplasia of the skull. Each patient had disease processes not amenable to surgery. The patients underwent clinical follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months. Their pain levels were documented at each visit by using a visual analog scale. All 3 patients demonstrated a significant decrease in pain levels and became independent of scheduled analgesics.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your response. We have found out that my husband has Barret's disease and Stage 111 esophageal cancer. We see the oncologist next week and he is facing chemo, radiation, and surgery. Thank you for your prayers, we are going to need them. I beat advanced ovarian cancer, so we can beat this too, with God's help.
Avatar f tn Could all be related? Maybe. Barrett's knows no age boundaries. If your daughter was a bulimic then the damage done from constant regurgitation could definitely cause the kind of damage required for the onset of Barrett's. In fact, there have even been some cases of esophageal cancer in <30yr olds, all associated bulimia. (Very, very, very few; I've only ever seen 2 documented cases.) The polyps on her vocal chords are very likely also due to the bulimia.
