valtrex

Avatar f tn I almost fainted. That never even cross my mind , that I can have a herpes. She did a blood test and results were HSV -1. I was not surprised I knew I have cold sores . My doctor said that I have to calm dawn , relax and everything will be O.K. I started to do my own research.I didn`t know that I can have HSV-1 in genital area , I was scared . Finally my symptoms went away after 6 maybe 8 weeks.I was fine for 2 months.
Avatar n tn Should I continue to take 1 mg of Valtrex? My understanding is that based on my Genitial HSV-1 diagnosis, I should never have another outbreak (or at least very few) and that I am at an extremely low risk of spreading the virus through shedding. Valtrex is outrageously expensive costing me and my HMO about $375 per month. Also, I am worried about the side effects of the drug. Lately I have started to feel rather depressed, something very new to me.
Avatar f tn I have read at least two studies about Valtrex 500 mg reducing the risk of transmission of Herpes Gladiatorum in high school wrestlers, and since Herpes Gladiatorum is a form of HSV-1, I would assume that 500 mg of Valtrex would work for suppressing oral outbreaks and transmission as well. I am interested to know your thoughts. Thanks very much.
Avatar m tn If he did contract HSV 1 genitally, it would stay HSV 1. If you went into a straight bar, you would still be gay. So it is with HSV 1. Just because it isn't in its usual place, it is still HSV 1, not HSV 2. Him taking Valtrex would not be helpful. Have you asked him if he has ever had a cold sore on his lip? If yes, then he is very unlikely to acquire HSV 1 in a new location on his body.
Avatar n tn What are the odds of passing the disease on to a new partner since so many more people are exposed to HSV-1 as children? Is valtrex an effective treatment for HSV-1. I have only had 1 outbreak ( the original one in Feb) and I am currently not taking anything. However, I would begin some sort of treatment if it helped to stop this disease from spreading.
Avatar m tn However, certain tests for HSV-2 can produce a false positive IgG if you already have HSV-1 in your bloodstream. Most or all of the tests for HSV-1 or HSV-2 can produce a false negative IgG if you are recently infected.
Avatar f tn 5) As implied above, there has been no research on the effectiveness of valacyclovir (Valtrex) on suppressing genital HSV-1. However, we know for sure that HSV-1 is inherently less susceptible to the drug than HSV-2 is. Therefore, to be effective, is is likely that higher doses would be required. The bottom line is that genital herpes due to HSV-1 usually need not be a big deal. It is reasonable for you to take precautions to protect your partner, but don't go overboard.
Avatar m tn 65) for genital HSV 1. HSV 2 was still negative. Then the nurse called me and asked me to use valtrex as prescribed for five days. I am devastated with the result. I cannot believe it. I did not have any symptoms for HSV. My wife did not have any symptoms to HSV all this time. Could this be a false positive? I am planning to request a Western Blot test soon. Could someone please explain this to me. I really appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Avatar m tn Question for you... I MAY have contracted HSV 1 genitally. I had previously had blood tests done which showed that I have HSV 1, but not HSV 2 (I've had cold sores). As of a week ago, I woke up with very red patches on the inside of my foreskin. Went to the doctor, he swabbed it and it came back as negative for HSV 1. I took one day's worth of Valtrex and by the next morning, it looked as though the red patch was nearly gone. I stopped taking the Valtrex as of then.
Avatar m tn I stayed on it as supressive because the test results took a long time to come back almost a month. When the doctor told me it was HSV-! and not HSV-2 I went off the Valtrex and feel the symptoms returning. I should also mention I haven`t had any sexual relations of any kind for about 3 years but I do realize it can stay dormant in your body. 1. Does Valtrex treat a variety of viral infections or only HSV1 2. I realize an accurate test result isn`t until 6 months.
Avatar m tn Hi, I have done a blood test recently to figure out if I have HSV. A few months ago I had a minor outbreak. I went to the doctor and he took a simple. The simple came out negative, but he told me that it is a normal thing. I have never had unprotected sex. Only one of my past boyfriends had cold sores.. So I guess if there is anything.. It should be HSV-1. What I want to know is the chance of transmitting HSV-1 while having unprotected sex but taking Valtrex (as suppressive therapy).
Avatar f tn Need to say, three months after my last encounter with him, I got a type specific igg blood test. It came back positive for HSV 1 and negative for HSV 2. I knew it would be hSV 1 positive because I've had fever blisters on my mouth in the past. SOOO....my question is, how did I get this? Did I get it from receiving oral from him and he might of had a fever blister at the time? I don't remember.
Avatar n tn 1) Does preexisting HSV-2 definitively protect you against HSV-1? Does it matter where the HSV-1 is located; i.e. oral or genital? I am afraid to kiss this guy because of the severity of my HSV-2 symptoms. I cannot imagine what having oral HSV-1 on top of my genital HSV-2 would be like given that my HSV-2 symptoms are so severe, constant and uncontrollable (see below). If the answer is yes, PLEASE direct me to studies so that I may further educate myself.
Avatar n tn 1) Is it normal for hsv-1 genital to cause this frequent of outbreaks in someone who had it orally for at least 7 years prior to getting it genitally? 2) Is there any way to prove/disprove I have it both orally and genitally at this point? I don't think there is. The doctors I've seen, my partner and my family all think I'm crazy and don't have it genitally but I am fairly certain I do based on my symptoms.
Avatar m tn she tested negative for HSV-1 and HSV-2, and I tested positive for HSV-1 and negative for HSV-2. I am quite confident that I have GHSV-1 as my most recent sexual encouter prior to this episode was in April 2010. I had a moderately-severe initial outbreak, with very clear blisters on the base of my penis and continuing sores popping up for an additional 3-4 weeks.
Avatar f tn One additional clarification: All of the data on preventing herpes-driven cesarean section are in women with genital HSV-2, not HSV-1. I'm not certain whether the ACOG and CDC recommendations about acyclovir (or valacyclovir) late in pregnancy are intended for moms with histories of genital HSV-1. My judgment is that treatment is still a good idea, and I certainly would want it to be done if my daugher, wife, or other person close to me were in your situation.
Avatar n tn I recently tested positive for HSV-1 but how do i know if I have genital herpes or oral? I have never had an outbreak on my penis. My Girlfriend tested positive for HSV-2. Could it be possible for me to get infected with HSV-2 since I already have HSV-1? This discussion is related to HSV1 Genital Exposure.
Avatar m tn 65) for HSV 1 [may be genital hsv 1 because I had complications in penis (on gland and under the foreskin]. HSV 2 was still negative. Then the nurse called me and asked me to use valtrex as prescribed for five days. I am so frustrated with the result. I cannot believe it. I did not have any symptoms for HSV. My wife did not have any symptoms to HSV all this time. Could this be a false positive (igg value of 1.65)? I am planning to request a Western Blot test soon.
Avatar m tn Has your partner been tested to know his own HSV status? If he has HSV-1 already you will not easily infect him in a new spot. There is a process in which no bumps are present and the virus is present on the skin. This is called asymptomamtic shedding. This means that the virus is present but there is no "blisters or bumps" present. You can infect a person who is HSV negative.
