Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex and pregnancy category

valtrex

Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Avatar f tn Pregnancy category b drugs are deemed safe by the FDA for pregnancy. Other pregnancy category b drugs are prenatal vitamins and tylenol. So, I would feel confident that your using this is safe. You can check with your doctor too but would not worry!
Avatar f tn It is a category B pregnancy drug but it's still not recommended for use throughout pregnancy suppressively by ACOG or even by most herpes researchers. Not that they know that there are any issues with it - just because we don't know. I didn't say that to alarm you but just out of surprise since most providers won't let you do it. That said - I did it on my own my 2nd pregnancy ;) Ok so let's talk about the suppressive therapy dose you did take.
Avatar m tn t mention if you are being prescribed the Viagra, and I know that some men take it themselves to last longer, and not because they have ED. If you fall into this category, try not taking it and seeing if it stops the outbreak frequency. (If you fall into this category, you might want to consider talking to your doctor about taking it, since it can cause cardiac side effects. Make sure it's safe for you to take.) Are you on a suppressive medication, like valtrex or acyclovir?
Avatar f tn if I may just have vaginal irritation from the constant moisture and contact with blood? Valtrex is category B and since.I have it on hand should I increase my dosing to head this off, I work for a doctor and we usually prescribe 5qd for 5/days..... any advice?

Avatar n tn Yes we do have studies that show that valtrex/acyclovir are both safe for momma and baby during the last month of pregnancy. In fact we don't have a single study anywhere that shows that they aren't safe - it's just erring on the side of caution that suppressive therapy isn't officially ok for the entire pregnancy.
Avatar f tn Pregnancy Category D is a stronger warning than a pregnancy Category C classification. However, a pregnancy Category D medicine may still be given to a pregnant woman if the health care provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh the possible risks to the unborn child. Klonopin was given a pregnancy Category D rating due to the problems it caused in animal studies.
Avatar f tn The outbreak was type 1 and it was on my butt. He decided to go ahead and culture the sore/cut and said if it comes back positive for herpes I would need to have a csection and the results should be back either Wednesday or Thursday. My biggest worry is if I go into labor before then. I don't want to have an unnecessary csection but I also don't want to put my baby at risk. I called the lab doing the culture and they said the results aren't schedules to be back until Saturday.
Avatar f tn if you take daily suppressive therapy with valtrex, avoid sex during obvious symptoms and use condoms, your partner would be 99% likely each year NOT to contract hsv2 from you. It's really low odds and never a reason to end a relationship. do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally?
Avatar n tn It sounds like your stress and anxiety is probably a mixture of hormones and just the whole experience of pregnancy and anxiety that comes with it. Please stay away from medication until you have your baby. And remember anything you have in your body, will transmit through breast milk. If you have post pardum depression, then definitely take medication (and therapy) if you need it.
1144050 tn?1261292610 Ask your doctor for sure. I just did a search on it and turns out someone had a similar question on this site in 2007: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Addiction-Substance-Abuse/Can-Oxycodone-be-taken-during-pregnancy/show/52784 and this was one of the responses: Actually, it's a category C, not B. It is unknown if it is safe or not.
Avatar n tn You can absolutely have a normal/healthy pregnancy and delivery of your baby with HSV. You may want to opt to take something like Valtrex for the last few weeks of your pregnancy to help stay clear of an outbreak though. Almost always a c-section is NOT required and not needed.
Avatar n tn You really need to consult your dr or even your pharmacist to get accurate information on what meds are safe for you and your baby ahead of time. Some anxiety meds (i.e. Klonopin and Xanax) are category 'D' - not recommended for pregnant women. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Check drugs.com for what category Valtrex falls under - that'll give you some info although you should go by your dr's recommendations.
849762 tn?1288184748 The temps will generally stay in the higher post-o category throughout pregnancy. Other than a few random highs and lows, I don't think it will start to drop at any certain time.
Avatar f tn The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that show side effects to the fetus in animal studies, but no human studies in pregnant women have been done.
298560 tn?1292276903 Corticosteroids have been used during pregnancy, but are classified in pregnancy category C; neonatal adrenal suppression and other adverse effects have been reported. Relaxation exercises and massage may be preferable to medication for treating spasticity during pregnancy, said Dr. Birk. Patients should also understand "that some muscle cramps are a normal part of pregnancy and are not necessarily related to MS.
Avatar f tn I am being treated for a urinary infections with both antibiotics (Cipro) and antivirals (valtrex) because the cause is unknown. My question is, is it safe to mix both medicines?
Avatar f tn Check with your OB or you can go to the FDA website. They tell you what is safe to take while pregnant and can give you the category it fits in for pregnancy.
Avatar f tn 13 weeks pregnant, FTM. I've had herpes over 10 years. I had two outbreaks in the first trimester. At doc appointment yesterday, Dr. said that's too many, and put me on 500mg valtrex daily for suppressive treatment. I thought baby was safe from contracting it while in the womb, and was only at risk during vaginal birth, but Dr. said that babies CAN contract herpes in utero. I'm worried sick now about it, and cried after my appointment.
Avatar f tn I just had a few positive pregnancy tests and I haven't seen a doctor yet. I have awful allergies and i usually take allegra. What allergy meds are safe to use during pregnancy?
Avatar f tn After 6 months on suppressive therapy, I was having constant vaginal itching and redness. My OB changed my valtrex to 1 gm and had vaginal itching decrease but did not go away. I was prescribed a cream-triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% and it would help to relieve the itch, but it would come back a few days later. I have used the cream for 2 years off and on, until recently due to becoming pregnant. Is itching a side effect of the valtrex?
454221 tn?1259445739 My understanding is that Prilosec had not been assigned a category for pregnancy by the FDA because its effects during pregnancy are unknown. Not taking the Prilosec until you have spoken about this with your doctor on Thursday as a wise idea - in the meantime, you can take tums (or a generic equivalent) to help w/ the heartburn. I hope you feel a little better soon.
