Valtrex during pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex during pregnancy

valtrex

Avatar m tn I now think I am pregnant again. I know Valtrex is a class B drug during pregnancy, BUT of course no drug is proven to be 100% safe. I will talk to my OB, but I was wanting the opinion of others on this board - if I stop taking the 1 gram daily dose, is it possible my body will have developed a dependence on the Valtrex and outbreaks will run amuck again?
1472764 tn?1287588186 Also, I do not believe Valtrex is safe during pregnancy in case you take it. Lots of women with HSV2 go on to have healthy pregnancies but if you have any type of oubreak, precautions need to be taken during delivery.
Avatar f tn Not every one knows, but I have it also just like you do. I was taking it with my last pregnancy and it keeps you from having an out break during your last weeks of pregnancy. But if you do have an out break when you go into labor then it would be an automatic csection because its dangerous for baby.
Avatar f tn thanks for your comments.... my doctors are the ones recommending the valtrex, including the increased amount, but it definitely makes me nervous. I definitely plan to go with the c-section if they don't have any more answers for me with my next appointment. This is my 2nd child, and I didn't have any of these problems the 1st time, but they still had me take Valtrex the last month of pregnancy due to my history.
Avatar f tn He performed an internal exam and then looked at my chart and realized that I am on Valtrex because I had an herpes outbreak about 5 years ago. The outbreak was type 1 and it was on my butt. He decided to go ahead and culture the sore/cut and said if it comes back positive for herpes I would need to have a csection and the results should be back either Wednesday or Thursday. My biggest worry is if I go into labor before then.
Avatar n tn how many obvious ob's you have during pregnancy is meaningless as far as your baby's risk. no worries there! igm testing isn't accurate for herpes testing in adults but having a + lesion culture to confirm your status is what you needed for answers. no more reason to repeat herpes igg blood testing on you either. have you had your pregnancy ultrasound to make sure baby is developing normally?
Avatar n tn if you are going to bother to take suppressive therapy during pregnancy, make sure it is the 500mg twice a day dose. you need the higher doses during pregnancy because of the natural immunosuppression of the body. you should take it up until you deliver the baby in order for it to have any value. stopping it even a day before delivery would make it useless to use it since shedding can kick in that quickly. do you have to take suppressive valtrex during pregnancy? no you do not.
Avatar n tn Yes we do have studies that show that valtrex/acyclovir are both safe for momma and baby during the last month of pregnancy. In fact we don't have a single study anywhere that shows that they aren't safe - it's just erring on the side of caution that suppressive therapy isn't officially ok for the entire pregnancy.
Avatar f tn have you discussed with your obgyn going on the pregnancy doses of valtrex ( 500mg 2x/day ) for the last month of pregnancy too?
Avatar f tn The last month of pregnancy the dose of valtrex is 500mg 2x/day everyday. You need higher doses during pregnancy to control the virus. If you want to increase your chances of not having an obvious lesion near the time of delivery you should talk to your OB doc about increasing it for these next 3 weeks. No obvious lesions at the time of delivery and it's a less than 1% risk of transmitting the virus to your baby.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know if it's safer to start valtrex early during a primary infection for genital herpes OR is it better in the long run to ride the infection out so that you can make sufficient antibodies so that FUTURE outbreaks won't be as severe??? Please help!!!
Avatar f tn I took valaciclovir during my first trimester of pregnancy (around 10 weeks) for a cold sore. I took the medication for 3 consecutive days. I read online that the medication is considered a class B drug and has no increased risk for birth defects. I am a bit worried now and wanted a second opinion.
Avatar n tn You may want to opt to take something like Valtrex for the last few weeks of your pregnancy to help stay clear of an outbreak though. Almost always a c-section is NOT required and not needed.
Avatar m tn It seems that sine I'm getting mixed messages in eagards to Valtrex dosages during an outbreak. I currently take 500 mg of Valacyclovir daily as a suppressant. But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression?
Avatar f tn He masturbates on a regular basis, even during his outbreaks. What are the risks of masturbating while he has an outbreak? I can't imagine it's good for him, but I just need to know if I'm nagging him for no reason. Thanks!
Avatar m tn We do not use condoms, refrain from sex during an outbreak and I take Valtrex daily. I am fortunate enough to have insurance that covers most of the cost, but my situation will be changing and my BF and I will have to out wieght the pros and cons of taking an expensive drug everyday. Its all relative.
Avatar n tn my partner who i met has been on Valtrex for a couple of years and the pass year we had unprotected sex. I went and got tested and my blood work came back negative. She is ok with the results and angry that she allowed me to convince her and not using condoms. I just can't explained why we did it without condoms only that I love her and we are getting marry.
Avatar f tn When I was a few years younger, I had a boyfriendfor over year that gave me herpes (always forget what type but it's the kind that are usually cold sores on your.face). My doctor says it won't be a problem with the birth as long as I take a suppression treatment (valtrex, or generic for about a month prior to due date once a day).
Avatar m tn I have been on valtrex for the past 4 months (1 a day) if the symptoms I am having have not gone away for a period of 2 years ( symptoms are there for a week then subside for 2 - 3 days then come back ) this has been like clockwork for the past 2 years.
Avatar f tn 13 weeks pregnant, FTM. I've had herpes over 10 years. I had two outbreaks in the first trimester. At doc appointment yesterday, Dr. said that's too many, and put me on 500mg valtrex daily for suppressive treatment. I thought baby was safe from contracting it while in the womb, and was only at risk during vaginal birth, but Dr. said that babies CAN contract herpes in utero. I'm worried sick now about it, and cried after my appointment.
127596 tn?1210922622 Instead I found an empty bottle of Valtrex, prescribed to her. Needless to say, there was no way in hell I was going to use any toothbrush in there. Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly.
20922415 tn?1661860103 During the reproductive years, the pituitary gland in the brain generates hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] and luteinizing hormone [LH]) that cause a new egg to mature and be released from its ovarian follicle each month. As the follicle develops, it produces the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which thicken the lining of the uterus called the endometrium.
Avatar f tn I yet lack a full understanding of the risks of having a non-primary 1st episode during pregnancy. Will the risk of the baby contracting neonatal herpes be the same as a primary 1st episode during pregnancy? I tried to speak to to my ob/gyn about this but he wasn't understanding my question and said, "who cares you still would need a c-section". If I do not require a c-section, I will choose not too. Too many doctors opt for the surgery when not needed.
