Common Questions and Answers about Use of digoxin in heart failure

digitek

Avatar f tn Hi, Digoxin is administered in the treatment of Congestive heart failure . Diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased and systolic blood pressure significantly increased during overnight sleep in the digoxin phase .Heart rate decreased in the overnight sleeping phase . Digoxin significantly decreases diastolic blood pressure during overnight sleep in patients with congestive heart failure.
Avatar n tn Retailers who carry Digitek should return the product to the place of purchase. Overdosing on this drug can be very dangerous. In fact, digoxin was used in a series of murders in the 1980’s and 90’s that were committed by a male nurse who claimed to have killed the patients to “end their suffering”. Digoxin is a generic of digitek and it is the generic that has legal issues.
Avatar f tn Digoxin and Toprol act in different ways and do not induce the same effects. I have atrial fib and was prescribed amioderone.
Avatar f tn Also of particular concern for women is the recent finding that digoxin increases the risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women. The researchers found that the use of digoxin for at least a year was associated with a 30% greater risk of being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Digoxin has a very narrow threputic window. Many patients start on a dosage of 250 mg per day. But this is often too little for some patients and too much for others.
Avatar n tn Hi, The doctor has rightly prescribed you lisinopril which plays an important role in cardiomyopathy in improving the functioning of the heart. I’ll also suggest the use digoxin for you which tend to improve the ejection fraction of heart and also improve the symptoms of congestive heart failure and it’s especially used for patients who have low blood pressure. Apart from that, I’ll suggest a low intake of salt and water. I hope that helps. Please do keep me posted. Kind Regards.
2021358 tn?1328748117 Beacuse I also have heart problems, the neurologist and cardiologist got together and prescribed DIGOXIN. Altho I have not see anything on the INET about the use of digoxin in auto neuropathy, I don't know why not. It made a tremendous difference in my pulse, bp, and even in decreasing stomache nausea and constipation (stomache is also controlled by vagal nerve). I felt almost normal. Digoxin is the only drug I know of on the market which strengthens the vagal nerve.
Avatar m tn my husband has been diagnosed with A-Fib and heart failure, today he has not been feeling well is heart rate is goining up and down from 45 to 118 he is feeling weak and fatigued. His ejection faction is 30 he is also a diabetic and is overweght. I don't know when I should make him go to the doctor or the hospital.
Avatar n tn If one has increased functionality of the heart, the drug may be dropped, also, there can be a tolerance that develops with digoxin that may require discontinuation for a period of time.
Avatar m tn First off, you should make an appointment with a cardiologist. Primary care doctors are capable of taking care of heart failure, but I would recommend at least establishing care with a cardiologist since it is a new diagnosis. With regards to the medications: There are a few beta blockers with evidence in heart failure -- they are carvedilol, metoprolol XL, and bisoprolol (not really used in the US).
Avatar m tn Though it is not widely used, doctors that prescribe this treatment indicate that it is particularly effective, increasing heart function without endangering the heart through rapid heart rate or high blood pressure. Its use in human patients is limited to France and Germany, though the medication is used in studies in other parts of the world. Historically, ouabain has been used as a poison. Ouabain is found in vines endemic to regions in Africa and Asia.
Avatar f tn I had a routine visit with Heart failure specialist on Feb.3, EKG showed I was in A-Fib. they said I was fine and to go ahead with trip to Mexico for a week's vacation. We returned Wed., the 25th; did well on trip and walking through airports. Thurs. i was out of breath walking 200 feet. Thurs. night had severe "cllunking" for well over an hour. Fri. saw the E.P.
Avatar f tn I'm 76 years old was diagnosed with CHF in February of 2009. I am being treated by a good cardiologist. My ejection rate is 34% and I hope increasing all the time. It was 20% in February at my initial diagnosis. I'm taking carvedilol, lisinopril, digoxin, medication for my cholesterol and diabetes 2 and also aspirin and cod liver oil . I would like to continue with my exercise program and don't know if it's allowed. It's not hard, just walking.
Avatar f tn Even if the defect is open but small, there is no evidence that (other than a very slightly increased risk of infection of the heart) there is any adverse impact on the lives of these kids. So, we have plenty of adult patients with small VSDs who have never had them intervened upon.
Avatar f tn You don't have the symptoms of heart failure. With that aside, conditions or medicines that slow the passing of electrical signals through the heart but are not the result of heart damage. These conditions include: Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), electrolyte imbalances, such as abnormal blood levels of potassium. . Heart medicines, such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, and digoxin can slow the heart rate.
Avatar n tn An EF of less than 40% confirms a diagnosis of heart failure. An EF of less than 35% increases the risk of life- threatening irregular heartbeats and may need an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to normalize the rhythm. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn during fever when the demands of the body tissues are more and heart is not able to meet the same, any sudden rhythm disturbances of the heart, any acute blockage in the coronary vessels which can result in a compromised blood supply, sudden surges in blood pressure which put an extra load on the heart muscle etc can result in a worsening of the EF.
4703993 tn?1379768388 My electrophysiologist is concerned about beta blockers in general... he now has me on 12.5 of atenolol cut in half.... Ok so I am not getting the side effects at that tiny tiny dose... but it is also doing nothing for my heart rate... he said atenolol is the only beta blocker he is willing to try because it is the least strongest of all.....
Avatar f tn it has been recalled!. There may be other applications, but it is usually prescribed for heart failure patients...strengthens heart contractions. Your son should have an electrocardiogram. That will estimate all heart wall dimensions, it provides the amount of blood pumped out with each stroke (medically termed ejection fraction), Also, heart valves are evaluated both structually and functionally, heart structure integrity, etc.
Avatar f tn However, if your cardiologist is saying that her congestive heart failure is controlled, and she is eating well without getting out of breath or getting sweaty, the peripheral cyanosis is most likely due to immature control of the circulatory system by the autonomic nervous system. We frequently see peripheral cyanosis occurring into toddlerhood. Of course, with a history of a congenital heart defect, there is the chance that she has some other defect that was not recognized.
Avatar n tn d (1998) with CHF and left ventricle hypertrophy (enlargement) your EF should have been less than 30%, not 60%, to be consistant with signs and symptoms of congested heart failure. This would be true as heart failure congestion is caused by the inability of the heart to pump with some equilbrium for the blood received from the lungs and this would cause blood to backup into the lungs and fluids would/will leak into the tissues causing congestion (pulmonary edema).
Avatar m tn Then as per doctors advice in apollo hospital medicated stents fixed in heart. Now he is suffering with water heavily in stomach. Avatar f tn I was diagnosed w/ dilated Cardiomyopathy 12 years ago w/ an ejection fraction of 25%. They thought the cause of it was from alcoholism. I have been sober since and began taking prescribed Lisinopril and Coenzyme Q10. My ejection fraction went up to 40% and stayed that way for years. 2 months ago I began to have severe breathing problems and the Echo showed my ejection fraction was reduced to 35%.
Avatar f tn The dr seems to think my Dad had a heart attck a few years back and the weakening of the heart is the result. Avatar f tn Ask her doctor if she has heart failure. It may not be congestive heart failure, but it certainly sounds like heart failure. Congestive is when it affects the lungs and cough a lot. Sometimes there is clear or white mucus coughed up and sometimes there is only a dry cough. Water retention in the abdomen is left side heart failure symptoms and water retention in the ankles, legs is right side heart failure symptoms. Doctors usually treat with beta blockers or ace inhibitors.
