Common Questions and Answers about Why is digoxin used in heart failure

digitek

Avatar f tn Digoxin significantly decreases diastolic blood pressure during overnight sleep in patients with congestive heart failure. This effect is likely to be caused by reduction of sympathetic activity or increase of parasympathetic activity. Increase of systolic blood pressure during sleep is probably caused by the positive inotropic effect of the drug. Oxygen saturation levels are measured before nebulisation to check the amount of oxygen required to be administered .
Avatar f tn There are certain instances where digoxin might be indicated. I believe it makes the heart pump more forcefully, so it might be used if heart failure was suspected. I hope all goes well for him.
Avatar f tn Digoxin and Toprol act in different ways and do not induce the same effects. I have atrial fib and was prescribed amioderone.
2021358 tn?1328748117 It is an old drug which was used for heart failure years ago. Unfortunately, I had bad side effects and had to cut my dose in half. Even if the MD does't go along with the digoxin, they are the specialists to see for the vagal nerve.
Avatar n tn I’ll also suggest the use digoxin for you which tend to improve the ejection fraction of heart and also improve the symptoms of congestive heart failure and it’s especially used for patients who have low blood pressure. Apart from that, I’ll suggest a low intake of salt and water. I hope that helps. Please do keep me posted. Kind Regards.
Avatar n tn Digoxin is a medication which is used for heart rate control in atrial fibrillation, It has been shown to keep people out of the hospital successfully, but has never been shown to decrease mortality. So if yous top taking it you may have worsening heart rate control, palpitations, possibly pass out (syncope), and could develop a breathlessness or even a cardiomyopathy. Speak to your cardiologist about the reasons why you want to spot this medication.
Avatar f tn I am being treated by a good cardiologist. My ejection rate is 34% and I hope increasing all the time. It was 20% in February at my initial diagnosis. I'm taking carvedilol, lisinopril, digoxin, medication for my cholesterol and diabetes 2 and also aspirin and cod liver oil . I would like to continue with my exercise program and don't know if it's allowed. It's not hard, just walking.
Avatar f tn The signs for which we look for evidence of congestive heart failure include getting out of breath and/or getting sweaty with feeds. If your child is not doing these and is having at least reasonable growth over time, it is likely that the VSD is what we call, "hemodynamically insignicant", which means that it does not need to have surgical intervention.
1706884 tn?1325787010 In addition, he has left ventricular hypertrophy which means the walls of his left ventricle are becoming thicker due to an increased work load on his heart which means his heart is working harder than it should. This is usually caused by high blood pressure.
Avatar m tn There are a few beta blockers with evidence in heart failure -- they are carvedilol, metoprolol XL, and bisoprolol (not really used in the US). Atenolol does not have any data to support its use in heart failure, so I would recommend a different agent (one of the above). Which one to choose depends on your blood pressure and ability to take twice daily dosing vs once daily. Chlorthalidone is a perfectly fine diuretic, if you have blood pressure room to tolerate it.
Avatar f tn I had a routine visit with Heart failure specialist on Feb.3, EKG showed I was in A-Fib. they said I was fine and to go ahead with trip to Mexico for a week's vacation. We returned Wed., the 25th; did well on trip and walking through airports. Thurs. i was out of breath walking 200 feet. Thurs. night had severe "cllunking" for well over an hour. Fri. saw the E.P.
Avatar m tn my husband has been diagnosed with A-Fib and heart failure, today he has not been feeling well is heart rate is goining up and down from 45 to 118 he is feeling weak and fatigued. His ejection faction is 30 he is also a diabetic and is overweght. I don't know when I should make him go to the doctor or the hospital.
Avatar n tn s explanation where he states digoxin is used to treat irregular heartbeats. I was on digoxin for a few months following my congested heart failue event. It is my understanding the medication is used to increase contractility of the pumping chambers. My medication for stablizing heart rate is a beta blocker (coreg) and an ACE inhibitor. My research: "Digoxin is contraindicated in patients with ventricular fibrillation.
Avatar m tn Lipitor is to reduce cholesterol, Plavix is to prevent blood clotting, Prilosec is to prevent heart burn, iron is to tackle anemia and iron deficiency, and centrum is a multivitamin. Digoxin is used to treat heart failure. Coming to Carvedilol, it is not a simple anti hypertensive medication used to treat high blood pressure, but is also a cardioprotective drug, used in patients with heart failure.
Avatar f tn The dr seems to think my Dad had a heart attck a few years back and the weakening of the heart is the result. He is taking to kinds of tablet , Duride in the morning 1 whole tablet, avapro, lipitor 20mg, lasixs and 5mg of the beta blocker. He used to take 1/2 a noten tablet before the beta blocker. He has said that he thinks he has a bladder infection and doesnt want to drink fluids after 7pm at night so he wont need to get up during the night. Is this a bad sign??
Avatar f tn A comparison of verapamil, propranolol and digoxin showed equivalent efficacy in a small group of patients. However, in general calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers are preferred to digoxin. Digoxin has been around for a long time! I used Digoxin over 50 years ago for my PSVT, and my recollection was that it did little to prevent episodes. There are so many newer drugs now that are far more effective.
Avatar f tn hi I ha been diognosed with heart failure in the severe stages what ever that means and want try me on different meds and devices I have refused and researched my self and have realised my heart has been puny at 25% since I was born premature and I have lived 40 years with pupping issue and will live another 40 health living no meds will help
Avatar f tn Several years ago a pychiatrist put me on 40 mgs of Adderil. I started having arrythimias according to a pacemaker check. Could this medication cause all of this to happen. Plus a paid mgmt dr put me on a strong muscle relaxer years before this and my heart beat dropped to 40 beats and this caused me to have the pacemaker. I sleep walk a lot and sometimes find some of my meds are gone and this occasion sev muscle relaxers weren't in the bottle.
Avatar m tn Its use in human patients is limited to France and Germany, though the medication is used in studies in other parts of the world. Historically, ouabain has been used as a poison. Ouabain is found in vines endemic to regions in Africa and Asia. People inhabiting regions where ouabain can be found frequently use the substance as a poison that, when applied to arrow heads or the tips of spears, causes cardiac arrest in animals.
Avatar f tn they used a patch to fix it and it can take several years for the hole to close around the patch.Chris did go into heart failure and that is why he went sooner then later, like they thought he would. it is very scary to have your child's heart to be worked on. there are always risk with any surgery. did your doctors tell you what was going to happen during the surgery? that is what made us feel somewhat better was we were told what to expect.
Avatar n tn I'm curious as to why you said the cardiomyopathy is hereditary? You gave the reason of letting A-Fib go without treatment as the cause of your cardiomyopathy and that means it is not hereditary. Usually Dilated Cardiomyopathies are cause by a virus, or can be caused by arrhythmia problems such as you described; Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathies have a tendency to be inherited, although sometimes can be sporatic.
Avatar n tn A person in heart failure should be on a cocktail of drugs and usually a pacemaker or ICD is implanted, but even then it won't stop the heart from failing completly. Currently to my knowledge stem cell research is only in the animal testing stages but looks encouraging. As to why her doctor did not order a pacemaker I can only guess he assumed her case was too far gone and the risk of the procedure did not outweigh the benefits.
Avatar f tn However, if your cardiologist is saying that her congestive heart failure is controlled, and she is eating well without getting out of breath or getting sweaty, the peripheral cyanosis is most likely due to immature control of the circulatory system by the autonomic nervous system. We frequently see peripheral cyanosis occurring into toddlerhood. Of course, with a history of a congenital heart defect, there is the chance that she has some other defect that was not recognized.
