Urine test strips nitrites

Common Questions and Answers about Urine test strips nitrites

Before seeing my GP, I had bought a home urine strip test which said I had no nitrites but that I tested for high WBCs. If I understand the science right, chlamydia should cause high nitrites, do I have that right? I guess I'm trying to rule any significant chance of the only std they haven't tested me for. Also, is it likely my wife has passed another bacteria to me?
Hi The WBC in urine along with blood is a sure sign of infection. A self strip test is not enough to know whether the WBCs have decreased or not. Nitrates are present in urine even otherwise. It is more important to test for nitrites which increase in infection. It is advisable to get a urine culture and sensitivity test to know what organisms are causing the infection and which antibiotic they are sensitive to. Maybe the organisms are resistant to Bactrim and Cipro.
UrinBilirubin, Blood, Glucose, Ketones, Leukocytes, Nitrite, PH levels, Protein, Specific gravity, Urobilinogen If everything is OK with one of these tests then no further investigation is needed?
FYI-- Walgreens and other pharmacies carry a product called azo which is OTC and used to treat UTI's. Some even carry AZP test strips and you can dip your own urine at home, then follow with the azo treatment. Not sure if you are breastfeeding and what the azo says about nursing mothers so make sure to check with the pharmacist or instructions on the box regaurding that.
the ovum, which occurs six to twelve days after fertilization. Ideally urine for pregnancy test should be done after 1 week of your missed periods date. Alternately, you can also use aimstrip urine for pregnancy test which is highly sensitive and can detect pregnancy after 10-12 days of conception. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
Clear SP Gravity: 1.015 normal PH: 5 normal Leukocytes: Neg Nitrite: Neg Protein: Neg Clucose: Norm Acetone: Neg Urobilinog: Norm Bilirubin: Neg Blood: Neg WBC: 8-12 RBC: 0 Epithelial: 0 Bacteria: 0 I am concerned about the WBC being so high. The chem test comes up negative for WBC, but the microbiology shows 8-12. No Leukocytes detected in the chem-strip, but WBCs found under the scope? What could this mean?
Any way, I am almost always in constant big time pain. I do have alot of UTIs. and I always feel like I have a uti. So, I have urine test strips just like the Dr. labs have-so I don't have to run to the Dr. every other day. My question is.......I ALWAYS test positive for Leukocyte esterase (WBC esterase). and usually I test it is really high in WBC.....Why would I keep testing postive for WBC? Is this common for IC patients? Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this for me.....
I am at loss to explain the different results between the Lab and home test. The lab test sample was given midday and the home test was first urine of the day? If I had MG or UU, would it always show up as positive for bacteria on a urine test even though they are not able to idenitfy the specific type of bacteria? I may just be working this up in my mind and Cipro and Azythro worked left the symptoms behind (the original test did not culture the bacteria).
I frequently use urine test strips to test my urine when I feel unwell that may be waterwork problem. Have had kidney stone surgically removed in the past. Nitrite on the stick will mean that it is a bladder problem - usually Cystitis. Positive leucocyte reading on the stick with or without signs of protein, usually means that there is a bacterial infection. If the doctor said you have a uti (urinary tract infection) this is anywhere from the kidneys down.
I do need to post this is expert forum for Dr HHH's expert comments on urine/blood/STD testing and results. Thanks for your comments alienshadow! I agree...Guilt eats man from inside.
These had been ongoing for a few months, intensifying in the last few weeks. He gave me a urine strip test which showed nitrites and white blood cells so he prescribed 5 days of 500mg Levaquin. I came back in a week with the same symptoms, he gave another strip test with the same result: nitrites and WBC. He prescribed 2 weeks of 500mg Cipro, twice a day. I noticed no change in my symptoms and so I went to a urologist.
I guess I was stupid to think they would be clean! I have not been tested yet but I tried a UTI strip and it was positive for Leukocytes but not Nitrite. I mostly have tender testicles and some overall bladder pain. I will go and get tested tomorrow. Can a STD go from mouth to mouth? I also have a slight dry and sore throat, could that also be an STD? How long does the tests take to come back?
About a month ago I noticed nitrates were testing positive on the strips (Only +first morning urine), I had no symptoms of a UTI and I did nothing. Then a few days ago my urine appeared green and was testing for blood, leukocytes, protein (I always have this), and still the nitrates(Now positive at any time of day tested). I then began having urgency issues as well as right side flank pain. I went to the Dr. and she said my urine was a mess.
I don't have insurance and money is extremely tight, so instead of what I knew would be a $200 trip to doc in a box and a prescription for antibiotics, I chose an otc urine test strip. It showed leukocytes but no nitrates. I am a 51 year old woman, excellent health, peri-menopausal and have had no period during this time. Since I have had no urinary frequency, no fever, no other symptoms, I decided to try the natural-path route.
I took the at home test strip and sadly so I tested positive in Leukocytes and negative in the Nitrite. Now for the 3rd time I went back to the Drs. feeling depressed that I was still dealing with this. I was prescribed Cephalexin, 4x a day for 7 days. It is now 1 wk later, I just took another at home UTI test strip, and again it is showing positive for Leukocytes. What should be my next step? Should I set up an apt with a Urinologist?
You need a pelvic exam to rule out other causes of burning, and possibly a look into the bladder. If the nitrite pad is positive on the urine dip test, then you probably have a UTI, however if the nitrite pad is negative, that does not rule out a UTI. IC is a chronic disease, and most experts feel you have to have symptoms for at least 3 month with negative urine cultures before the diagnosis can be made.
I'm trying my best to stay off of my feet and that helps a lot. They suspected a UTI, but I took a test from walmart (you get three strips) and the first one said positive for the white blood cell and negative for the nitrite. (that meant something could be going on, or it could be nothing) The second one was completely negative and the third was the same as the first. I was so confused. Anyone ever take these tests and get accurate results??
Very small traces of blood is not seen in the urine, only a reagent urine analysis strip will show that this is present, but lab testing is more accurate. Having the presence of leucocytes in the urine indicates an infection. I have been having a similary problem with my wateworks, just had a blood test to check on kidney function and am waiting for an appointment for an ultra sound. I suspect that I have either had or may be still have a kidney stone.
Cloudy urine could be the presence of white blood cells (possibly there's still an infection). Or, you could also purchase over the counter UTI testing strips, which will test for white blood cells and nitrites (by product of bacteria).
I would also like to add, that I take the UTI home test strips and they always come back negative for nitrites, but a high positive for leukocytes. I have also been told by a few ER docs that I have trace amounts of blood present in my urine. I've been to a regular urologist, and he treated me like I was some kind of hypochondriac. He said he had no idea why I was feeling burning when all of my cultures were negative.
In the last few months i have even dreamt i was going to the bathroom and have slightly wet my bed three times. I did a azo test strip fpr UTIs and WBC was positive but nitrites was negative. It was not the first urination since i got up and had been 3 and a half hours since. I have also had BV a few times in the last year. Dr. said all of this comes from menopause. I have only been on Prempro for less than a week. Any suggestions from you to stop this cycle would be grateful.

What tests should I ask for to ease my mind. Also my urine is frequently cloudy without infection. At-home test strips say I have leukocytes but no nitrites. Thanks for any advice.

Thanks Dr. Went to the Dr. today. They did a urine test that she told me came back negative for white blood cells, nitrites??? etc. Must have has a lab there as it came back pretty quickly. I had not urinated for like 4 hours so hopefully that was a good sample. Coupled with my negative Chlam/Ghon test she was kind of puzzled as to what it could be. She said maybe yeast but doubtful.
lower back and side pain and lower pain around the waist its fells like somebody kicked me in the groin.I have urine test strips to test 2 times a week and i have been showing small HEMOGLOBIN ca.10 NITRITE IS PINK,leucocytes CA.25. I had another Cytology test that said benign malignancy just like it said in July before they found the tumor.
I have been testing my self severl times over the past 3 years for urine infectin using Urinalysis strips that including WBC and Nitrite tests but its always negative. I am not sure what is causing this pain. Once a doctor said it could be becuase of some temporary injury to the prostate but now it has been about 3 years and this pain is still not gone. I would greatly appreciate of some one can give me guidance what to do about this pain. Is this somthing I need to really worry about?
Dear Dr. Hook, Thank you very much for responding so quickly, and on a Sunday. It means a lot to me. My only last question would be this: when you say most gonorrhea, do you have any idea of a %? >99%? thanks, this will be my last question.
Nitrite (maybe)*********** high number of false negative test results in small animals nitrites occur in urine during some bacterial infections. Leukocytes (only interesting for dogs)*********** False positive test results often occur in cats, and this test is clinically unreliable. So only measuring PH, Blood and perhaps nitrites and Protein in urine are interesting.
