Topamax for chronic pain

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for chronic pain

topamax

681148 tn?1437661591 She still has pain and still needs to use strong pain medications for break-through pain but... without the topamax she would be completely disabled and would not be able to walk or use her hands at all. On the topamax she lives a very normal life! So, I think it is a very useful medication for chronic pain. For my chronic migraines, though, it did not bring them down to under 15+ migraines a month. So, my neurologist has also put me on a Beta Blocker and did Botox shots for me as well.

Avatar f tn My husband had had chronic head pain for the past 13yrs. After seeing a Neurologist that specializes in head pain he thought he could be bipolar. He is currently on a high dose of fentanyl in the patch form. My husband and I agree that it is time to get off all narcotics. He is starting to taper off on Monday. This doctor prescribed Topamax 100mg, Seroquel 100mg, and Depakote 500mg. My question is... After being on these for 4 days he is a zombie!
5857909 tn?1375628784 First of all sorry for my language but i do not speak English very well I have been taking Topamax for 10 years for the chronic headaches . The result has been excellent. For the past two years I can say that the pain is completely gone.
2932946 tn?1344722012 m thankful for that. My doctor just tells me to take Tylenol or ibprofen first then resort to my pain meds if it doesn't go away. But i take up to 4 Tylenol or ibprofen at a time just about twice a day. usually lessens it but doesn't go away. I know its not good to take that much Tylenol, anyone else have any other options that help with their headaches?
Avatar n tn I took topamax for a month for chiari pain and feibro. It made me worse. I usually get most reactions to medicines though. I was depressed and angry all the time. After I stopped taking it I felt a lot better. I have chronic pain 24/7 and nothing works usually. I would rather not rely on pills. I have tried every pill and only ones that work at all and don't make me crazy are excedrin-works as well as anything else, vicodin and morphine.this is just my experience everyones body is different.
Avatar f tn But I suffer from chronic pain due to migraines and trigeminal neuralgia and so far none of the preventative medication that I have tried has really worked. The Topamax for my migraines do help minimally and my new medication for the TN, Tegretol, well I'm trying to let that work, but it just isn't. I have been going to the Headache Clinic at Georgetown University Hospital for the past year for treatments and did an inpatient stay once.
324184 tn?1308076203 I would proceed with extreme caution with topamax! I've had chronic mIgraines for 10 years now. I'm 25, and have tried pretty much everything. Topamax gave me my life back for 6 months......until it gave me glaucoma!!! Yes, really read up on this med! Glaucoma is a very real side effect. It also makes ANYTHING carbonated taste awful and bitter. It's a great med for some people but it took my already damaged brain and made it way worse.
Avatar f tn My husband has been suffering from chronic migranes for 2 years, he has taken all sorts of antidepression meds: celexa, zoloft, paxil, just to name a few. He was also given midrine and perscribed topamax but was so expensive we were unable to purchase it and after some of the things I've read about the eye problems I'm not sure if I want him to try it. He did have an MRI but there were no signs of tumors and such. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Avatar n tn I use topamax 125mg daily for preventative therapy. I also use 400mg of B2 daily for preventative therapy. To supplement acute therapy, I use naproxen (a prescription NSAID). As for some suggestions... yeah... what DrNoopurMD said!
2104296 tn?1334841551 I think she is afraid of prescribing pain meds to anyone. I have stopped take any medication right now for my migraines. I need advice on what to do? Do I tell her I need new medication including pain medication or find another new doctor that cares more about their customer’s health? Do I stay the course and get a new migraine medicine but do without the pain medication and deal with it?
Avatar m tn She recovered completely but since some years ago she developed a chronic migraine. Of course we went to a lot of neurologists, made tomographies, magnetic resonances, etc. etc. and everything looks ok. Currently she takes 75 mg of Topamax (topiramate) in the morning and 75 mg more at night. Additionally, she takes 1 or 2 Acetaminophen (650 mg) daily and when the pain is very strong she takes 1 Maxalt (Rizatriptan) 10 mg.
Avatar f tn I took Topamax for awhile trying to stop a "non-stop" headache. The side effects were bad enough for me that it was discontinued. The lack of balance and eye pain I had were what my neurologist decided were reasons to discontinue. The headache pain was as bad on Topamax as it was off Topamax, so it just wasn't the drug for me....
Avatar f tn I had a left temporal lobectomy for refractory epilepsy and a brain tumor, and have had chronic pain from the craniotomy for the past three and a half years. Since more people on this part of the website have experience with craniotomy surgery than on other sections (other than the epilepsy section), I figured I'd post my question here. Has anyone tried botox injections to address such pain? I have read mixed reviews...
Avatar n tn I have had chronic daily headaches for the last year now. Since right after the birth of my last child. I have tried all kinds of different meds from daily meds to preventatives. I do not think that they are migraines since they do not come with anyother symptoms, but I am not sure They are alway one sided though. My neurologist has not really told me what causes them or what they are just switches my meds or ups the doses.
Avatar n tn Hi Pam, I added the Nadolol to the mix of stuff I use for my migraines because currently I am still classified as having severe chronic migraines (15+ a month)... so for me the topamax isn't working to reduce my migraines to under 15+ a month. That is why my neurologist added Nadolol to the mix of what I am taking. I also use zomig nasal spray (a triptan, migraine medication) and naproxen (a NSAID, pain killer) for acute treatment of migraines.
Avatar f tn Hi I have a question for any one that might can give me an answer. I have been having headaches for the last 2 months .According to the ER doctor they are migraines. I go there get shot and go home it will ease off but end up going back within a week for another shot and I think they think that I am just playing or something. Anyway I have had migraines before but only maybe once or twice a year.
1983417 tn?1326416870 I've suffered from daily horrible intense chronic tension headaches the past 5 months which I believe where due to stress which caused a "flare up" in my tmj so I saw a nuerologist who diagnosed me with chronic tension headaches. The past week I've been taking topamax and an anti-inflamatory which has significantly reduced my pain. However, my head feels sooo weak and weird! I was wondering if this was a normal healing process since I was in pain for so long?
Avatar m tn I suffer from chronic migraines and I have learned to deal with them but throughout the last 4 years I have suffered from random very sharp and painful pains in my head. They affect my balance, vision and on occasion my speech. I have noticed that the position of my head and neck may be connected to the onset of these pains. Can someone please give me some suggestions as to whats going on????
Avatar f tn We need to stay in touch. I also have daily chronic headache, same tests as you were normal, have been to 3 neurologists (2 headache certified). Have your doctors accurately defined (to your satisfaction) whether you have migraine or tension or cervicogenic headache? Different preventive medication for migraines may not be effective on tension headaches. I have tried propanolol, which did nothing for me. Ditto for topamax--just made me dizzy, couldn't tolerate it for more than 1 day.

618913 tn?1234747600 Hi, I don't know if anyone has any advice. I have had a headaches since last Friday (off and on) They got worse on Wednesday with really bad nausea and I had to go into my neurologist and he gave me an IV treatment. They gave me extra pain meds and nausea meds and said I'd feel like I was punched in the head the next day but that the IV treatment was successful. I felt that way the next day but I still have remnant headaches. Today I'm even sound sensitive.
5848391 tn?1380728642 Doctors tried Topamax for prevention and Maxalt for immediate onset. This helped but has not cured. I have come off this medication since then. I have tried changing my diet. The diet change really has helped a lot but it's really hard especially when you just really want that candy, etc. It's not just candy either. I am looking into going to a new doctor soon. I hope you get the answers you are searching for.
