Synthroid and osteopenia

Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid and osteopenia

synthroid

Avatar f tn I am 53 and just diagnosed with osteopenia of femoral neck. I exercise every day and do multiple forms of exercise. I can only assume this is because I have been on synthroid for years! I have doubled my dose of calcium to 1200 from 600mg but will now stop taking it so soon after synthroid after reading the above posts.
Avatar n tn From early June 2013 to mid-December 2013, I took Synthroid 137 mcg (3 times per week) and Synthroid 125 mcg (4 times per week). In mid-December 2013, I had some blood tests (ordered by my PCP), and the results were the following: TSH = 0.104 (normal range = 0.340 - 5.600 uIU/mL) FT4 = 1.28 (normal range = 0.61 - 1.81 ng/dL) FT3 = 3.0 (normal range = 2.3 - 4.
Avatar f tn I am in my 60s and have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and have taken Synthroid for nearly 25 years. Would long term use of Synthroid contribute to osteopenia?
231441 tn?1333892766 Hi, question for anyone knowledgable. My thyroid levels are ideal, I think. OK TSH is now undetectable, but FT3 and FT4 and in upper 1/3 of the reference range. I take Erfa dessicated thyroid 215 mcg/day. But I've just had a bone density test. The results are within normal range. But they also show that i've lost about 15% of bone mass accross the three sites measured (Z scores gone from about 1.9 down to 0.3) in the past 2 years.
Avatar f tn If you have osteoporosis, you should be taking calcium w/magnesium and vitamin D. I have had osteopenia for years and by taking my calcium (1200 mg/day in 2 - 600 mg doses) and along with exercise, I have been able to actually rebuild bone previously lost.
Avatar n tn ve had osteopenia for a lot of years (well before hypothyroidism) and have actually rebuilt bone, with a program of calcium, vitamin D and exercise, in spite of being on both T4 and T3 thyroid hormones. I take my T4 and 1 T3 tablet first thing in the morning and 1 T3 tablet with lunch... I need the medication and it's become a habit that I don't forget. Your labs were within the normal ranges (look very good, by the way) because of the medication.
398079 tn?1235171132 7mCi of RAI on Jan14th and then started back on Synthroid 100mcg 2 days later. I had my thryroid removed in Aug 07 and had started Cytomel after the surgery for a short time. There is only 1 hospital in my area that does the RAI treament so I had to wait till it was available. The endo I go to is a complete jerk and put me on Synthroid for 2 months changing the dose twice because my TSH level was never normal. I went to him in the beginning of Dec and was in some much pain with body aches.

Avatar n tn Recent xray report says osteopenia, despite a life of too much food and an extreme amount of weight-bearing. (My extreme Diet Coke intake probably explains the deficiency.) So I bought Viactive caramel chews which supply calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. Faithfully taking them-cheap and taste so damn good it is hard to limit myself to the daily dosage lol.
Avatar n tn I have been in meopause since I was 39..i have not had a period in nearly 2 years..i had no symptoms except maybe a couple of hot flashes.but i now have osteopenia.my question is does this get worse? i have it worse in my right hip and in my back..when i walk i have alot of pain in my hip and i end up limping if i walk far..i'm wondering if this could be the osteoporosis? and I also have alot of pain in my upper back.
Avatar f tn If anyone can tell me something about Arimidex and the above side effects and osteopenia and whether or not I need to start a bisphosphonates please let me know.
Avatar f tn My worry is how that will affect other parts of my body by that suppression. I already have osteopenia and I know this can affect my bone density. I am only 36 and would to get full blown osteoporosis by the time I'm 40! Also, with these low levels, can that affect the heart? I am currently taking 175 mcg of Synthroid and when I asked my doctor, he said I would probably stay on that for at least a year.
Avatar f tn I don't think many health practitioners are aware of this, but I could be wrong. If you have fibro, CFIDS/ME or an autoimmune condition, I highly recommend getting a DEXA scan to rule out osteopenia and/or osteoporosis. And this includes the male members here as well... I've seen a few men on the research protocol I'm on who have been diagnosed with either one of these two conditions.
Avatar f tn The test rules out osteopenia and osteoporosis. I know I have osteopenia and many other women and even men with CFS and fibro have osteopenia or osteoporosis as well.
Avatar f tn The nurse called me back and said to stay on the Synthroid and he wants to have me recheck the Free T3/T4 in one week and he will refer me to an encrinologist. Since I also have other 'issues' that an endocrinologist is skilled in, such as osteopenia getting worse since last dexascan and hopefully, also, NOT diabetic-yet.
Avatar f tn Went to the cardiac specialist and had all the test on my heart and everything was fine. It was all due to the thyroid and low D. Once my synthroid kicked in and vitamin D level came up (took about 2 - 3 months) everything has been fine. Hopefully yours will improve also.
649848 tn?1534633700 Saw my ENT today to get the results of tests done a couple of weeks ago. TPOab = 194 (normal range < 35); ultra sound report: "thyroid gland shows it is heterogeneous and suggests the possibility of multinodular goiter. Left lobe length is 4 cm. Right lobe is 3.5 cm. No dominant nodule is seen, however". ENT says I definitely have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. My question is: can someone explain the ultra sound report a little more clearly?
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia. I took the stuff for about 6 years, and each of my bone density test results were a little worse than the previous one. Recently I learned that many women who took this medication for as long as I did got femur fractures as a result. When a doctor on ABC national news suggested that women stop taking it after 5 years, I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss stopping this med. My doctor agreed, but now suggests that I take Evista.
Avatar m tn Hi - my mom is 80 and she has been on Synthroid for quite some time. Her doctor is reducing her medication because of bone density and her age. She is in excellent health. Since they have reduced her medication she has had horrible depression. Is this something anyone else has experienced? Also, after reading several posts, I noticed that a lot of people mention that the T3 and T4 levels are important. I am asking for myself on this one.
Avatar m tn Arimdex is known for causing osteoporosis and osteopenia not to mention extreme joint & bone pain. Eight months with expanders is a wee bit ridiculous unless you're trying to stretch enough to be Pamela Anderson Junior. Is his schedule that full that he's making you wait that long? I'd want to get that over with ASAP since the implants are much more comfortable than the expanders.
