Avatar f tn Management would primarily consist of pain relief and physical therapy. Anti inflammatory medications help in offering relief from painful symptoms. Exercise and stretching includes the ones to increase motion in the joint and second the ones to minimize the loss of muscle on the affected left arm if the condition persists to a chronic form. These exercise must be done several times a day. moist heat application can help loosen the joint and relief from pain.
Avatar n tn Make an appointment to see your doctor. The doctor will be able to examine your neck movements, send you for imaging to be done by x-ray or other to find out if there is any underlying cause. Have you been involved in any accident where your neck was jarred abruptly? Having wrong posture doing keyboard work and also getting caught in a draught, like a window open in the car, can also cause neck problems. See the doctor to find out the cause so that you can get the appropriate treatment.
1392168 tn?1280074408 The pain is mostly dull and towards the back of my neck, however sometimes I will get a more severe pain down on side. (Sometimes benig once a week, quite rarely.) Over the past few days I have been yawning frequently and sometimes when I yawn the lower front of my throat seems to seize (stiffen) up and hurts. I get scared and worried about swollowing. I have Hypothyroidism and have been known to have anxiety problems, too.

1794411 tn?1321495731 I have a bed buddy for my neck and the heat seems to help, but there are times where the pain just feels like I need the ice pack...I have the pain in the back of my neck from a bulging disc in C6-C7, plus a lot of the headaches are always at the base of my neck. So I am just wondering what others find to work better. Thanks!
Avatar f tn t use bio freeze right now. Instead use moist heat NOT A HEATING PAD.... instead use a rice pack. The moist heat will penetrate copper into the muscle. Then every 15 min alternate it with a cold compress. Alternate them 3-4 times every 15 min. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn First, try 20 minutes of ice followed by 20 minutes without anything followed by 20 minutes of moist heat. Repeat a couple times. If the knots go away, they are probably caused by muscle strain. If they come back, repeat the ice/moist heat therapy. [Do NOT put ice directly on your skin, and do NOT put a dry heating pad directly on your skin. Use only MOIST heat ... put a damp rag between the heating pad and your skin.
Avatar n tn You might try a moist heat wrap. For your jaw, you might also try ice. Do you have a night guard or flat planed splint to try to protect your teeth or jaw joint? And try relaxing your face muscles, letting your jaw go slack and maybe even some massaging. You might even get the doc to prescribe for short term use if it is really bad some valium to help with the tension. I have very bad TMJ problems, with arthritis in my jaws. I use a flat planed splint at night.
Avatar n tn And meanwhile as I had mentioned moist heat could be a temporary relief. Another temporary relief you could consider are Acupuncture or trigger point injections.
Avatar f tn Hey everyone, I am 22 years of age and having a serious problem and really needing some help desperately. I have extreme pain from a inner big lump behind my left ear, right above where my jaw bone and neck meet! I’ve had it for many years, and over the years it seems to be getting worst. I can't even touch behind my ear, when I throw up the bump causes numbness all over the left side of my face.
Avatar n tn About a month ago, I began waking up with my upper back very stiff and sore. The pain would eventually work itself out and I would be left with my usual muscle aches. A couple of weeks ago, I began getting a tingling feeling spreading from behind my right shoulder blad, into the back of my upper arm, and even rasdiating around to my chest area. It feels like there's a vibrating muscle massager inside of my skin- but without the therapeutic effects.
Avatar n tn I also woke up one morning with a stiff neck out of nowhere. Essentially, my head was immobile. I went to my long time chiro and got little relief, but kept going and used ice on it for 10 minutes on 10 minutes off. Though this seemed very counter intuitive to me, it really helped. I did not go to an MD, but did wonder about meningitis given the abrupt onset and severity. However, there were no other symptoms except fatigue which I felt was secondary to the pain and stress of the neck.
Avatar f tn In my experience, if this pain is nerve root pain from your neck, it may do no good to try and treat your hand or arm where you feel the pain, and OTC pain meds might not help as much as one would hope. Try applying ice or moist heat or both to your neck, instead, to see if this lessens the pain in your arm. I've also found that regular X-rays do not always show a herniated disk, but that an MRI is sometimes required.
Avatar n tn my wife has stiff swollen neck and even her shoulders look swollen but the swelling is barely visible and paining while trying to turn her head. please help, thank you.
1468129 tn?1286470763 Absolutely, moist heat is the best. I have to take a very hot shower just to get moving in the AM and again in the evening again. I also got a buckwheat warming thing that goes in the microwave that provides wonderful penatrating heat. Online they are from $30-$50 but I found one at TJ Max for $16. so look around. 3min in the microwave and you are good for 30 minutes of heat. Be sure you are following up with your doctor because it could be something else.
1201849 tn?1266676723 The past week, I am wearing my soft cervical collar and using moist heat and Ibuprofen for pain relief. I can barely hold my head up. I am so very disappointed with the results of my surgeries. I can't handle living so dysfunctional and useless. Are my expectations and goals too high??? I would be sooo grateful for any advice or guidance from you! I trust you!
947040 tn?1300685387 This doesnot mean that the procedure was unsuccessful or that recovery would be slow. Pain in the neck and arms is not unusual, caused by inflammation of the previously compressed nerve. it will slowly lessen as the nerve heals. Medication to control the pain would help. You could try moist heat and frequent repositioning. Consult your surgeon for the best relevant advice. Take care.
5559430 tn?1369931341 I have a hard time tolerating this stiff neck and head pain. I feel so bad that I almost always feel like I should go to the emergency room.

Last mnth I had Mri's done and my surgeon said they look good. I went and saw a pain Dr. and he put me on a muscle relaxer that's supposed to help but so far it hasn't. I am having more pain now then I did before surgery and I am becoming very depressed. I am worried that when I go back to the pain Dr.
Avatar f tn Heat seems to work better for me than ice... but I just can't take it during the summer! I begin to sweat all over!!! I wear the heat pads that stick directly to your skin during the fall, winter and spring. I would not be able to function in the colder weather without them... Thanks for the tip, however - I might just try your suggestion during the winter when I am home!! Moist heat is great!
Avatar f tn Tricyclic antidepressant, such as amitryptyline , is more effective than NSAIDs.Seeing an orofacial pain specialist is advised if pharmacologic management is intervened. Moist heat is more effective than cold application, unless there is neural dysfuction involved. If you can find a competent health practitioner, I do'nt think your boyfriend's tmj problem is hopeless.
1415174 tn?1453243103 past the place where the pain is felt.........go to the pain and stop. If after a couple of days, your neck is no better......or worse, see your doctor, especially if the pain worsens when you bend your chin to your chest. I also found that eating several chocolate chip cookies right after this exercise seemed to help. Give it a shot. What do you have to lose? I hope it helps! https://www.youtube.com/watch?
Avatar f tn I am having acute pain behind my left shoulderblade. The pain extends up my neck and down my left arm.
Avatar f tn However if you have just begun anxiety/panic disorder treatment--headache--slight fever--horrible stiff neck/joint pain usually accompanies it. Hope this helped.
