I took respirdal a while ago for perceptual distortions. It was helpful for them but it made me feel way too slow. I was not even taking that much. But I'm not schizophrenic so that's probably why. I didn't experience those side effects you were describing. I was really tired all the time though. I never slept so good in my life. One time I had dystonia from taking compazine for about 3 days. I woke up and felt stiff at first.

Lithium as does Risperdal has long term side effects. But ever medication does. As to what medication is most helpful for each person that's a psychiatrist's decision so feel free to ask why. First, is the breakup the source of your problems, meaning you didn't have them until the breakup? Because if that's the case, you don't have a chronic problem and probably shouldn't be on any medication but should have been directed to a good psychologist to get a handle on things at most. I began taking atypical antipsychotics just over a year ago, and stopped just over a month ago. I have been on Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Geodon, in that order. Risperdal caused me to have a grand mal seizure. I was only on it for a month or so, and I was taking a fairly low dose (I don't remember precisely how much). Neither Abilify and Seroquel lasted long because of unpleasant side effects (nausea and twitching/akathesia).

BUT, I have to take it or I am in pain. So try not to worry so much about the long term effects when you are trying to survive today. If you are worried about this I would talk to my doctor and let them know what you are experiencing and there may be something they can do differently. Just dont stop any seizure med without a doctors help. Hope you feel better..

hi OrenCohen. I want to welcome you to Med Help. Is your doctor aware of this side effect you are associating with discontinuing the Risperdal? All medications such as this can have withdrawal issues. Cold turkey going without Risperdal would be very rare for a doctor to recommend. Are you sure this was what your doctor wanted you to do? Again, this is not a normal recommendation and especially for a 4 mg dose. You need to see your doctor again. Now, it's been 2 months.

There is some confusion with akathisia in that some people confuse it with tardive dyskinesia, a long-term, even permanent movement disorder that comes from dopamine blocking medications generally after long-term use. But akathisia is in a different category of side effects; it is usuallly a problem during the early use of a med and it goes away quickly after stopping the med. I have to wonder, therefore, if you are truly having akathisia of whether something else is going on.

i have no clue why your dr. prescribed you that. you dont need it and it has pretty severe long term effects. i mean you would have to be on it for a LONG time to really be in harms way so you should be fine. but youre absolutely right. you dont need it. tell your doctor you want off as soon as possible. im not sure if you can just stop that med so please consult your doctor first. k? good luck.
