Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal side effects elderly

risperdal

Avatar n tn I am being met with resistance and am concerned that the attending physician is completely in the dark about several studies regarding the negative effects of these particular drugs in elderly patients with dementia, or any helpful alternatives. Are there any alternatives to using antipsychotic medications in this case? I have a hard time believing he is being kept in this state for other than that it makes him less work for the staff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn Yes but he needs Risperdone to bring him to normal level and later Depokoate to keep his mood stable.Risperdone has numerous serious side effects especially in elderly patients so is kept only till required. It will tapered very slowly over 4-6 weeks so generally symptoms wont return. It can be restarted by his psychiatrist if they do so dont worry.
Avatar f tn The Risperdal can have many negative effects on children. These type of anti-psychotic drugs have never been tested on children so the long term side effects of children using this drug are relatively unknown. My brother was put on this drug when he was younger and has suffered from extreme weight gain and facial tics. The tics never go away - even with stopping the drug. Risperdal is not usually used for PTSD or ADHD as it is an anti-psychotic.
Avatar n tn The geriatrics department at Johns Hopkins sponsored a seminar at Mount Sinai last year specifically dedicated to the inappropriateness of risperdal for the elderly patient. Long term use of risperdal will result in tardive dyskinesia, siezures, and degradation of sentience.
Avatar f tn It is normally used to treat people with serious mental health problems like schizophrenia. It is a newer type of antipsychotic drug and may have fewer side effects than older antipsychotic drugs. Risperidone has sometimes been given to people in the later stages of dementia.
Avatar n tn I am on risperdal and I was wondering what the possible side effects are of smoking marijuana while on this medication.
1286779 tn?1400012806 I think Jaybay just gave you great advice. Lots of elderly have different side effects than the more common ones. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.
Avatar m tn There was one side effect that I read that sort of concerned me aside from the movement side effects. Does the inability to move the eyes always go away or can it be permanent? How long does it take for it to go away if it occurs?
Avatar m tn hi. i just stopped taking risperdal after being on it over 1.5 years last week because of the side effects. it was supposed to be helping with the ptsd related symptoms but found it was making them worse. i had a really bad night with it last week and decided i'd had enough. by all means get off of it if it doesn't seem to be helping---just let your doctor know first.
Avatar m tn Sensipar works be lessening the amount of parathyroid hormone (PTH) released by the parathyroid gland. Less PTH means less calcium and phosphorus are released from the bones. Sensipar is prescribed for secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, hypercalcemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma, and severe hypercalcemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who are unable to undergo parathyroidectomy.
Avatar f tn The neurologist put him on risperdal. I just read horrible side effects, like breasts on boys. Is there a more " beginner" drug? Since we see a neurologist instead of child psychologist, I am fearful he doesn't know as much about behavioral medications. Sorry so long.
337492 tn?1212458836 I have a job interview Monday and I really want it. Anyone have luck on a low dose of Risperdal w/o yucky side effects? I need a reliable sleep aid!
2010625 tn?1329372056 I really dislike medication changes...it is always a roll of the dice to see what it is going to do...
Avatar n tn Risperdal could be causing side effects. It caused a lot of side effects in me and when I got better I had my Pdoc taper it to 0.5 mg and will soon stop it.
Avatar m tn Okay, let me ask this a different way? I want to get off the saphris because of the side effects but am afraid of being suicidal again. I'd heard Risperdal is used as a "booster" med for people being on anti-depressants. I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects.
Avatar f tn My concern is that our friend seems to be caught in a downward spiral of overmedication, in which new drugs treat side effects of old drugs, but create new side effects. I am writing instead of him basically because he is so debilitated that he doesn't even have the energy or acumin to be asking probing questions.
886552 tn?1241590297 Someone I now was on the same medication because of being diagnosed with schizophrenia. He had side effects like you describe. Turns out he was misdiagnosed and is now off the meds. He no longer has any of the symptoms and is perfectly fine. He was on the meds. only 6 months however. So if you feel you are in a similar situation, I encourage you to discuss it with your doctor and see if the meds. are really needed. Never just stop taking meds. though.
1798419 tn?1315810427 told me that Effexor may attribute to weight gain, and it DOES state this in the side effects printed from the manufacturer, so your Dr. is incorrect. Do your homework and don't trust all the Doctors, find a good one, and also consider natural health options if you possibly can. Good luck!
1625195 tn?1332178662 Is there any way possible to cut the hunger side-effects? Or any tips to battle the nausea that it causes? Before this whole medicine nonsense was happening, I was trying to lose weight (safely!) and this hunger pain and headaches are making this goal really difficult. And the nausea is making day to day tasks harder than the depression was making things. And this is the last round of questions, promise! Its about the Citalopram/Celexa. There is a suit going against Celexa.
886552 tn?1241590297 My comment is kind of void! My side effects were just at start up of the drug! Good luck, I truly hope things get better.
Avatar f tn But for me any kind of medication is the last resort, especially whilst their brains are growing. All medicines have side effects. Some of the medication prescribed for autism/ADHD can have permanent effects such as tics etc. Also, you don't have a diagnosis yet, so how do they know what to prescribe? I know other parents who have had hormes prescribed to help with sleep.
642393 tn?1227032656 Abilify has a lot of information on the web about side effects and a quick google may work well, always remember that side effects are not all going to happen to you or even likely - Abilify is well liked and fairly safe compared to some of the AP and AC drugs like Geodon and Risperdal.
