Common Questions and Answers about Reversing plavix with platelets

plavix

Avatar n tn I stopped Plavix - 3 days later ALT 124, AST 21. Before Plavix ALT 14, AST 18, platelets 281K. PCP dx is drug-induced hepatitis due to Plavix. While I agree Plavix caused me problems, my RUQ episode was textbook biliary colic. 4 years ago after pregnancy I had a week of clay-colored stools and RUQ pain after eating potato chips. No labs were done and US found no stones. I avoided fatty foods for years and had no other problems until now.
Avatar f tn The whole idea of plavix is to make platelets less active and a patient is now generally on this medication for a number of years. My first stent in 2007 required plavix for 1 year. My new stents in Sept 09 require plavix for 2-3 years minimum. They seem to now believe the longer you are on plavix the better, to prevent clogging of stents. They should be taking blood tests to make sure her clotting factor is as required. I assume she is on aspirin daily also?
Avatar f tn Thank you for any info on plavix. I have an appt. with the neurologist, but lots of info. on the drugs is better.
Avatar f tn There are no documented evidence that plavix causes stomach bloating. Plavix is a medication that helps prevent clot formation, and there is increased risk for excessive bleeding.
1210142 tn?1266077031 ) And if you look at some of the posts above/from jrbon- he stopped Plavix after 18 months and have not had any problems. My sister is an MD in Bulgaria and the practice there is almost the same as here- stopping Plavix after 12 months. So, no matter how much and how long we discuss this- the statistics should speak for itself.
Avatar m tn t have as it pertains to restenosis with drug eluding stents. Then the regimen of choice is dual therapy of aspirin and plavix for about a year and then aspirin alone. Do you have a specific condition that requires all the blood thinning medication? I take a baby coated aspirin, and bleed for several hours after a dental procedure, It is not typical for that much anti-platelet...high risk for internal bleeding; hit head you could bleed to death rather having a minor injury.
Avatar n tn European doctors only prescribe plavix for the first year after stents. This is the period with the bigger re-stenosis risk. Normally we are just left with an small aspirin dose as anti-agregant.
Avatar n tn Some surgeons request that a patient not be on plavix or warfarin at the time of surgery in order to minimize the risk of bleeding. Traditionally, the effects of plavix on platelets is minimal after 5 days. Usually, blood clots normally about three days after taking warfarin. This is quite variable and can be confirmed by a blood test (either checking INR or prothrombin time), prior to surgery.
Avatar f tn The current gold standard for plavix is challenging with ADP... challenging blood platelets with ADP and seeing if they aggregate. It is believed that 40% is a threshold, but no one can prove that 40% is the threshold and there are patients that re-thrombose when they have 40% and we had majority who thrombose when it's lower than 10%. Obviously, this does not translate to practical utility.
Avatar f tn I have three stents; 1 bare metal in LAD and 2 DES in RCA since Feb 2007 after having an M.I. Vascular surgeon wants me to stop my Plavix/Aspirin in a week to have balloon angioplasty performed on lower extremities due to blockage in leg. I am scared to death of stopping the meds because I have read in this forum that abruptly stopping can lead to another MI within days. Is there any truth to this.
Avatar m tn Both drugs are some what the same, they both work by keeping your blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots. Plavix is a adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor and Pradaxa is a direct thrombin inhibitor. Both do basically the same thing just in different ways.
Avatar m tn On the other hand, it was found that a substantial number of people who were taken off plavix after a year and continued with just aspirin, formed clots. So I think it's a balancing act. You either have slight increased risk of bleeding, or, you form clots which will cause heart attack or stroke.
Avatar f tn Taking Plavix indicates you have drug eluding stents. The a drug-eluting stents (DES) basically have a special drug that delivers the agent right at the site of the injury to the artery and prevents much of the scar tissue from recurring. Compared to the alternative bare metal stent and it is known that the likelihood of the arteries re-narrowing after drug-eluting stents are much less than after bare metal stents.
612551 tn?1450022175 The Plavix is widely advertised and available in the USA. I have discussed with my cardiologist in past years. He said, no way is it a substitute fo warfarin... but again I tolerate warfarin well. But too, I've never had any severe cuts while on warfarin.
Avatar m tn In the UK many patients are prescribed Plavix for 18 mths to be on the safe side. The drawback with Plavix, especially if taken with Aspirin, causes you to bleed for much longer when an artery is damaged, through surgery or an accident. I had a decision last over a year ago when I developed a bad tooth which needed extracting. My GP said that I would have to bear the pain because the heart is far more important than the tooth. Easy to say when you get constant toothache.
Avatar n tn I have a 15lb Mini Schnauzer who swallowed one of my husband's Plavix this morning. My husband was pouring it from its container into his hand when it fell onto the floor. The dog was right at his feet and was on it like white on rice.Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do? How long does it take for this medication to get out of the system in a dog?
Avatar f tn This drug is basically equivalent to Plavix - but much cheaper to buy. Of course, you really need to discuss all medications with your physician and determine the risks and benefits to you.
Avatar n tn First is the development of chemicals from the damaged cells which are sent out to attract and excite platelets into action. The second is the receptors on the platelets which sense those chemicals and start to stick together. Aspirin actually plays 2 roles. First it inhibits the release of the chemicals from the cells and second it reduces inflammation which makes artery disease progress more.
Avatar n tn My neurosurgeon says I need to go off Plavix for 6 weeks prior to surgery. I am very concerned about going off Plavix since past thrombosis and nearly dying. Can someone tell me the risk percentages for thrombosis if you had it prior. My wife would like for me to hold off of surgery until absolutely necessary or they come up with more info on Plavix. Thank you for your help.
Avatar m tn Since that time, I have had problems with chest pain and stomach pain, along with a host of other pains. I had a second cath to look at my heart because of the chest pain and the heart was said to be fine. Having a hard time sleeping at night and anxiety is building because of the pain. Anyone else have these issues? Also, is there a blood test that can be given to see if the Plavix even works for my gene make-up?
Avatar n tn t appear to interfere with Plavix, but Plavix is a drug that has a lot of contraindications, so I would be careful about most anything I took if I was on Plavix. So if your doc has no idea, as I suspect is the case since moringa isn't commonly known or used in the western world, I would probably try to find an ayurvedic physician. Heck, write Deepok Chopra, he's the most famous ayurvedic physician in the world.
Avatar f tn It is a round white spot with a red dot in the center. It does not itch. I am taking coumadin and plavix. Is this a sign of bleeding under the skin? I have also started having red marks, some size of dots and some larger and brown "age spots" on my skin. Anyone have similar condition? I was told to stay away from vitamin K because this effects the coumadin and my pro time. I have read that a lack of vitamin K can cause the brown "age spots" on the skin.
