Prilosec and gluten

Common Questions and Answers about Prilosec and gluten

prilosec

Avatar f tn Hey aberleytrei91, I have had that on and off scratchy throat from GERD off and on for years. I tried a gluten free diet and my GERD went away. I have stopped taking my proton pump inhibitors for awhile now. I would suggest to stop carbonated sodas, caffeine, alcohol, citrus, dairy, tomatoes, peppers and potatoes and gluten for 1 week. Then reintroduce only gluten products for a day or two and see how you feel. Continue your PPI during this time. If your symptoms come back it is gluten.
Avatar f tn I have pulmonary nodules thought to be caused by a gluten intolerance and I cut sugar, dairy, gluten corn, soy etc. a week ago I stopped the Prilosec and I am down to one Zantac 150 per day with very few symptoms. I have a hydrogen breath test tomorrow as my GI feels like my problem isn’t LPR and may be SIBO. I have a HIDA scan Monday to check a distended gallbladder seen on a recent mri to check a simple renal cyst. There didn’t appear to be any inflammation or blockage of the gallbladder.
Avatar n tn If you've been on the nexium and you've changed your diet to a GERD-friendly one and the symptoms continue, have you been scoped yet? If not, it's time to ask your doc for more testing. Ask to be tested for H. pylori and have an upper endoscopy done to get an idea of what your esophagus, stomach and duodenum look like. All PPIs have side-effects that can be more serious than weight gain.
Avatar m tn Celiac disease, a reaction to gluten, is becoming more and more common. It now affects 1 in 130 people! Please get tested for gluten allergy. They should do about 3 blood tests. Even if you had upper endoscopy and they didn't see damage, you could still have it and it hasn't shown evidence of damage yet. If this is it and you go on a gluten-free diet, you will start feeling better soon. I had a friend whose only symptom was terrible heartburn. She had advanced Celiac disease.
Avatar f tn I'd also remove things like gluten, dairy, coffee, tea and see if that helps.
Avatar m tn I was recently diagnosed with gastroparesis but there were no celiacs, which is good, but I was told that I could still have gluten intolerances and to go gluten free for several weeks to see how it goes. I am just baffled, was told all my life I just need to eat more fiber or take some supplements, well, apparently the Fibercon that I have been taking for 25 years is not a good thing, so I quit it and am trying to change my eating habits.
Avatar f tn Generally an endoscopy shows the condition of the esophagus, and if any cells particularly above the LES valve show changes, which is a strong sign, as I understand, of acid reflux. The fact that the ph test shows problems certainly would be a reason to have an endoscopy. It is a procedure that won't do more than make your child pretty loopy, and will give a lot of information. I'd ignore any suggestions of diet and drug additions or withdrawals, there are many reasons for GERD, etc.
Avatar m tn I have gone to many different doctors. I have tried reflux medicine and I take Prilosec everyday which helps with the acid, but not with the throwing up. I have gone to an endocrinologist who did many different cat scans and nuclear medicine scans and eventually she said they found an object which turned out to be stool because I was severely constipated and I had not gone to the bathroom in three weeks.
Avatar m tn More people like you need to research their ailments. Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, reports that there are 25 digestive disorders, and many have similar symptoms. Ulceratis Colitis and Crohn's disease are good choices and could be what you have. Prilosec, 10-gm x 2, is good to keep your stomach in check. I have GERD, and I take Prilosec, 20-mg, once a day.
Avatar f tn I have burning in my esophagus, pain under my sternum, sore gums, very sensitive teeth, neck and chest are always bright red and hot. My hair is thinning and my skin is sensitive. I also have pain in my abdomen, usually on the left side. I've had CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, upper endoscopy, stress test and have found nothing. I've been on 40 mg of Prilosec for three months and it made me feel a little better but not great.
Avatar f tn I do watch diet and execise, all that. I'm on a very strict diet that is closely monitored by my doctors. I have to check in with my nutirtionist, Kendall, every two weeks. They weigh me and watch my BMI so we get a more accurate check. Everything revolves around my gluten intollerance, liver issues, and PCOS. Now, the PCOS diet in and of itself would be simple, because it's a diet that works to up the metabolism.
Avatar n tn The Pepsid was prescribed as 40 mg once a day and so is the Prilosec. It is day 2 and he is still having a lot of pain but now it is going into his back. He took 1 prilosec yesterday afternoon, 1 this morning and 1 just before bed tonight (it said you could take up to 2 if you had to). I did some research on Prilosec and it said that it could take up to a month to start feeling benefits from it. I was thinking that maybe his esophagus is burned from the acid so it may take a while to heal.
1108194 tn?1378424522 I take chinese herbs for the gerd. It takes awhile to get going but they usually work. I went to my dr. and she gave me otc prilosec instead of sending me for a test. She called the fatigue some kind of hypothermia. The blood goes to you stomach to help digest the food and then you feel like passing out. She pushed on my stomach and my the back on the opposite side of my stomach cramped up. That was very weird. That spot has been bothersome, but its linked to the stomach irritation.
Avatar f tn Acid reflux is caused by gluten. If you stop with Prilosec and go completely gluten-free there will be no more acid reflux. I suspect chest and rib pain will gradually go away too, but reflux will go away the very next day.
Avatar f tn Typically start 3 hours after eating. No pattern with what she eats - can eat same foods other days and feel fine. She also has mini episodes of nausea that last 5-10 min. Almost always happens in the evening. The severe bouts last 2-3 hours and seem to happen monthly around the same time, though not always. She hasn't yet started menstruating but I expect she will within next few months. Regular blood panel normal, gallbladder ultrasound normal, gluten sensitivity negative.
Avatar f tn I have acid reflux and take protonix occassionally when needed...recently I had a bad scare where I suddenly starting gasping for air...I have had similar attacks in the past, but this one was major as I felt like I would stop gasping....There was no warning before the attack....It did subside...Is this common with acid reflux and what do I do when this happens? I did over indulge with food over the holidays...I am not over weight and I do exercise..
Avatar f tn After SEVERAL doctor and hospital visits; complaining of constant yawning ( or incomplete yawning), and deep breaths... none of the doctors would listen to EXACTLY what I was telling them. My symptoms were constant but were worse after eating. It seemed like my abdomin was somewhat bloated, and pushing upward, making it harder to breath. As of 5 days ago, and a NEW doctor, we have finally narrowed that I either have "silent reflux" or "celiac disease".
Avatar f tn Personally, I think she has Gluten issues, and while she has cut back since my own Gluten-issue diagnosis, she has not completely stopped and as long as she is still having SOME gluten, problems will continue. But I am not a doc.... So meanwhile, I guess we are wondering if omeprezole is one of those wonder-drugs that years down the road will turn out to be dangerous and we are looking for others who have had similar problems and what they have tried and what the results were.
Avatar n tn What may be happening is your body is having an allergic reaction to a protein called gluten and the main symptom from this is abdominal pain, gas, constipation, headaches and so on. Gluten is found in ALL wheat, barley & rye products. Bread, cake, beer, croutons, soy sauce and may other items contain gluten.
Avatar m tn Went back to my surgeon he referred me to a gastro dr, and prescribed me Prilosec. Prilosec did nothing. While waiting to get in I continued to get worse. Heartburn, throat feels like its on fire, chest pain, acid taste, indigestion, back pain, burping, acid coming up every time I burp. Finally got in to the gastro dr. He put me on protonix, and scheduled me for an EGD and Gastric Emptying Test. Both came back fine, but still feel horrible. Surgeons question if it could be anxiety?
Avatar f tn Take omeprazole (empty stomach in morning) and antacid gel and see if it helps. Liver and kidney dysfunction is another cause. Hence kidney and liver function tests should be done. Other causes are diabetes and hypothyroidism. Electrolyte imbalance too can cause nausea. IBS, gluten or lactose intolerance, parasites in gut too can be the cause. A stool test should be done for worms, giardiasis etc. Also if nothing is found then food challenge test to detect food intolerance should be done.
Avatar m tn ve tried all the OTC drugs like prilosec, maalox, gaviscon, gas-x, Zantac, and even Dexilant. These drugs have minimal effect on my symptoms. I've even tried Acupuncture for stress. I've cut out Gluten and Dairy for a time, though admittedly I probably have not done this for a long enough period (about two weeks total). This has really effected my quality of life and my productivity on the job. Sometimes I think I will have to live with this forever which makes me very depressed.
Avatar m tn I am a healthy 60 year old that has been dealing with GERD symptoms for nearly 15 years. This has involved being on and off Prilosec, closely watching my diet, elevating the head of the bed, etc.
Avatar f tn Some people with celiac disease disease and psoriasis, when they follow a strict gluten free diet, can heal their psoriasis. But this is not the case for most psoriasis sufferers. And their are other autoimmune conditions that can cause right upper quadrant pain. If you have one autoimmune condition, you can also have others. And of course, there are non-autoimmune conditions that can cause pain in that area. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn I can drink sprite, ginger ale, mountain dew, gatorade, fruit juice ( although not too much apple and no orange juice) and no dark beverages. I also recently tried sparkling water and that seems to be ok. I am going on a gluten-free/soy free diet just to see if I have a food sensitivity. Any suggestions on what my next step should be would be greatly appreciated. Also I don't know if I should see a GI or an ENT.
Avatar m tn You're lucky your GI took the biopsy. Mine is stubborn and won't do it. I have to simply avoid the foods that make the problems worse, like gluten, in order to be proactive and take preventative action. Mine has the attitude that if the blood test is negative he isn't going to do the small intestine biopsy. And, you're right about that being the only 100% way to know for sure. I want to fire him, but I can't, because my PCP is limited on where she is allowed to refer me.
Avatar n tn I have other symptoms that have lead me to consider and try a true gluten free diet. I am 4 days off Prilosec and day 4 of no grains and I'm feeling quite a bit better. Good luck to you as you continue to pursue your health.
Avatar f tn I have heartburn and it is caused by celiac disease which is gluten intolerant. I take papaya enzymes. They are a digestive enzyme and it really helps to take away the pain. You could be gluten intolerant. It is a simple blood test. You can buy the papaya enzymes in any health food store.
Avatar f tn After the upper endoscopy I was told I had a Hital Hernia right below my sternum where I have been having pain and that my stomach had redness. He took biopsies to check for celiac (gluten intolerance), and H. Pyroli bacteria. He didn't tell me much other than what he saw. I looked up what the hernia is online. My question is what caused it to randomly start giving me pain, why is my stomach red, and what does all this mean for me in the future.
