Common Questions and Answers about Prilosec and digestion

prilosec

Avatar n tn The GI doc has me switching off omeprazole (prilosec) in the morning and ranitidine (zantac) before bed. Switching the two helps and of course watching what I eat and drink, Right now I am uncomfortable from my dinner - the giant milk shake was a bit too much milk and sugar for me. I have no saage advice for this one.... but can definitely commiserate.
Avatar n tn If you've been on the nexium and you've changed your diet to a GERD-friendly one and the symptoms continue, have you been scoped yet? If not, it's time to ask your doc for more testing. Ask to be tested for H. pylori and have an upper endoscopy done to get an idea of what your esophagus, stomach and duodenum look like. All PPIs have side-effects that can be more serious than weight gain.
Avatar n tn Today she takes betaine HCL with pepsin supplements to increase stomach acid and digestive enzymes to help with with digestion and is free from severe GERD and severe LPR. Digestive enzymes are helpful for both high and low stomach acid.
Avatar f tn nexium and prilosec are both PPI's therefore they make less stomach acid causing slower digestion of food...causing slower metabolism...thus gaining weight i would reccommend maalox max or maybe TUMS but try full strength...if those dont work then stick to your meds...
Avatar n tn My specialist said I have gastritis. He said I should take Prilosec for 8 months. He didn't say anything about antibiotics. Gastritis is caused by many things: Alcohol, NSAIDs, Helicobacter Pylori, Autoimmune Disorder. The only one that makes sense for my case is Helicobacter Pylori. (Unless Autoimmune Disorder is somehow related to food allergies.) Pylori is a bacteria that is resistant to stomach acid. Taking Prilosec would only make it even more hard to kill.
Avatar n tn pylori and now developed GERD and Acid Reflux because of the long term use of prilosec.. I cannot stop taking the prilosec because the acid and chest pain come back times a million, and i cant eat really anything anymore.. I did not have any problems with acid or chest pains or not being able to eat until i started taking the prilosec.. I really think that if i wasnt having any symptoms then why give someone some for symptoms there not having, just to make them worse in the end..
Avatar f tn i had to start takin prilosec 1x a day and its safe for.
268911 tn?1213744781 I'm new to this forum and was wondering if someone might be able to tell me if abdominal pain, constipation and gas are side effects of PPI's. My neighbor is a doctor and prescribed me prevacid, I took them for 2 weeks, and began to notice these problems. I told him this and his response was "Prevacid does not have those side efffects." but when I search "Prevacid side effects" these symptoms show up on every page. ANy direction woudl be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Many people report heartbeat rate changes when using PPIs. And the changes in the stools could be due to lack of full digestion of foods due to lowered acid output. Changes in bowel habits are another often reported side-effect of these meds.
4798447 tn?1359319344 Two things you can try at home, 1, Try taking a 14 day program of Prilosec OTC, if you have a marked improvement, then this may confirm HPylori, because Prilosec shuts down the stomachs acid pumps, and supresses the HPylori bacteria, You should also 2, Go to a local health foods market and purchase a good "Probiotic" Jarrow brand is one of the better brands.
1296528 tn?1272524830 I have not gotten one single case of heartburn since I started the gabapentin. I used to be on 2 prilosec a day and am now down to one. That last one is more a psychological thing I think but I plan on eventually getting rid of that last prilosec at some point. Note: I have a lesion on the basel ganglia area of my brain which I have been told can affect digestion so gabapentin might not work to relieve heartburn if you do not have a lesion in this area.
401554 tn?1270213756 T2 area of the vertabrae) have a very large part in the heart rates and rhythm. I have been treated on and off again by him for about 12 years for lower back problems. After my attempted ablation and ICD implant, I went saw him for a treatment on my lower back and told him about my heart issues. He explained about he sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves and how they work and adjusted my T1 & T2 areas.. I went back once a week for several weeks and then stopped going...thus...
Avatar m tn I am male, 37 years old, non smoker, 3 drinks a week drinker, no dip, play Basketball 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours, pretty healthy diet but not the best, I own a construction company and all blood work is squeaky clean. About 8 months ago I was 1/2 way in a large commercial project and getting a heavy dose of stress. I normally operate on stress, so much so that 5 years ago I went through bankruptcy and had plenty of stress, but never physically hurting from it.

Avatar n tn t suspect I have GERD (inflammation was very minimal) and that possibly it could be functional dyspepsia. I got off Prilosec and eventually the nausea symptoms went away and I was fine up until 2 weeks ago. Now, my main problem is frequent belching and brief episodes of nausea but these are much more manageable than last time. The belching however is becoming problematic - the only time I get relief is by laying down.
Avatar m tn Hi. I'm hoping someone could help me out! Just last night I think I experienced Heartburn for the first time and it was while I was eating. It seemed to last for about two hours. I looked on the web because I was freaking out because I had this sharp pain in my chest. So, I tried drinking a cup of milk, which didn't seem to help. Eventually it went away. I seemed to feel fine for the most of the day but I've felt like my stomach was bloated.
Avatar f tn (Such a pretty nickname!) Sometimes, excessive belching is a sign of an over abundance of "bad" bacteria in the digestive system or insufficient digestion leading to infrequent bowel movements and a buildup of gas. It has to exit one way or another! To keep the gas from forming, drink kefir and eat plain yogurt regularly, and drink a "green" beverage every day, such as a little aloe juice or wheatgrass juice from the health food store.
Avatar f tn t take it often only when all else fails. Mine got so bad I asked my doc and he prescribed me a medicine that is like prilosec otc. It is a heaven sent med.
Avatar f tn I got this under control with prilosec and took it for about 4-5 months. I tried coming off of it and after a few weeks the heartburn was back with a vengeance and I had a new symptom. Ectopic beats happening a lot, especially at night. I've had the odd ectopic beat over the years but I'd have one then they would dissapear for months. Now it was one all the time every night and the only thing that gave relief was burping.
8975356 tn?1416414054 Try to include yogurt in your diet as it is a probiotic which replaces lactobacillus acidophilus (good bacteria) that helps with digestion. And Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates that act as food for probiotics. Probiotics are found in foods such as yogurt, while prebiotics are found in whole grains, bananas, onions, garlic, honey and artichokes. A combination of two in a healthy diet is beneficial. Try this. Regards.
Avatar f tn My mother takes betaine HCI with pepsin to increase stomach acid (high acid is not common) and digestive enzyme supplements for good digestion (low stomach acid also leads to insufficient pancreatic digestive enzymes). With these supplements, my mother's GERD and LPR (both severe) vanished in weeks. She did rule out H Pylori bacteria first with the urea breath test in case this was the cause of her reflux. Her reflux returned a few times.
Avatar f tn I am now taking two antibiotics, prilosec, and a probiotic. My question is why do I still have Australians occasional heartburn. I still have 6 days left of treatment. Anybody want to offer any thoughts?Thank you.
Avatar f tn he might want to try a otc ppi, like nexium or prilosec and see if it helps more, it takes time to heal, months, if no enough he might have to see a dr for a prescription.
Avatar f tn Hpylori bacteria is the bacteria that causes ulcers and stomach cancer if left untreated, I had this treatment twice in two years.
Avatar n tn (However, I stopped taking it because I felt it slowed down my digestion and I was having a lot of abdominal distension - and still am (I am frustrated that has not yet been diagnosed).
Avatar f tn This causes your body to stress out, firing up your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response), which in turn slows down digestion. Slow digestion = acid reflux. Take yoga and meditate or something. Vigorous exercise helps out. 5) When you exercise, don't overdo the weights. These may make your heartburn worse. Taking some Gaviscon before working out will help reduce acid exposure during the workout process, but skip the powerlifting.
Avatar m tn It is not a hiatal hernia as it is located at my naval area. It is big, protrudes and I get some pain with it but mostly feelings of being bloated and trouble breathing. Any other recomendations? thank you very much for your time.
573569 tn?1278629655 Try and drink some kind of herbal tea before you go to bed, it calms the digestion and nerves, Camomile is good but some herbal shops have their own blend. You can try having a higher pillow too. Good luck.
1299871 tn?1274701870 Well, Ambien is sedative and while sedated I would not expect a normal appetite but more an increased digestion function as the parasympathetic nervous system is most likely to take over the sympathetic nervous system which makes you calm due to the nature of the drug itself. While this may be one option, vitamins could also reduce you need for food. Maybe it is stress related? Depression related? You have many options here. The best thing would be to talk to your doctor.
