Do I need to be concerned with him being on prednisone for a long time? I know a friend that had a dog that developed diabetes because of prednisone and am worried about this.
4 2011 and on the 5th put on prednisone 10 mg. She gets the prednisone 2 times a day for 1 wk then as directed. Can just a few days on the pred cause the eyes to be larger and nose to be lil runny. When she had the blood test, red blood cells were clumping together and minutes later they were not. Vet is not sure if its an infection, toxin exposure or cancer. Her immune system is attacking her platelets.
I have been prescribed prednisone for a hearing loss issue today. Ive been und since July 2011. I have not yet taken my post tx vl test although all my blood work looks good. I was wondering if anybody has any info on this. I looked on past posts and found it all to be old and not real specific. Thanks ahead of time!!
What a shame your vet made what appeared to be an honest mistake in communication. It does sound as though your dog needs the higher dose of prednisone a while longer to keep the intestinal inflammation at bay. It's such a trial and error thing to find the lowest effective dose for these kinds of problems. Since it's now Monday, go ahead and call your vet. At the same time, ask him about protocol for these kinds of things and emergencies that crop up on weekends.
My vet prescribed 20 MG of Prednisone Q12H last week. Immediately my dog appeared to be having an adverse reaction.. as he was panting, nervous and shaking. I spoke with my vet and I tapered down... but he's still panting tonight and it is worrying me. Anything I can do to help him in the meantime ? As far as his diagnosis, we still aren't sure but have ruled out many other possible health conditions.
Aspirin is itself an anti-inflammatory -- not as strong as some of the other anti-inflammatory drugs, but sometimes it is enough. Sometimes even one 80 mg dose of aspirin, once a day, is enough for a 60 lb. dog. Again, all one can do it try it and see. If larger doses or more powerful drugs are necessary, a vet can always be consulted.
I have an Akita dog who is about 7 years old he has a list of problem including occasional seizures and a thyroid problem. However now he has a bad rash/dry skin. The vets have tried everything from scrapping skin, steroid shots oral and injected antibiotcs. We use special shampoo and sprays for the rash, he has had this in the past and luckily had a great recovery but now its back and not getting better. Please help its becoming so expensive and I feel he is so uncomfortable.
He also prescribed a course of Prednisone to start after I have the MRI's. Any of you who have been on this steroid, would you please give me some info about your outcome and side effects? Thanks!
My anxiety is getting better (been 7 weeks for me) Last dose of Prednisone on Feb 12th. So you didn't think you have some sort of hormone issue (Thyroid/Adrenal or Glucose) that the Prednisone caused? You think the flushes were due to anxiety? Yes. I could be in a store and start to feel really warm.. its awful. Yes. I was a nervous person before but never had constant anxiety or panic attacks. I have not had a panic attack since March 13th now...
My doctor put me on prednisone which after I tood two doses I awoke with the worst case ever. I ended up in the ER and they gave me an additional injection of prednisone and prescribed me Zantac * I haven't needed to pick it up yet/ still at the pharmacy. This was on 12/20 and tonight with my fingers and toes crossed my hives seemed to have vanished. My recomendation would be to quickly go to the ER and get a shot in your butt of Prednisone. That seems to have helped me.
I didnt really want her on Prednisone, I heard people say it isnt very good for dogs but if it will help her I am willing to try it. Does Prednisone make them not have energy, she will not even get up and walk any, which she has been really tired lately and hasnt been playing much, now she is just sleeping all the time except she will wake up for a few minutes and cry and scratch and then she goes back asleep.
of prednisone three times per day is a high dose that can cause a variety of side effects, which I am sure was necessary due to your dog's severe anemia, and other bloodwork abnormalities. However, the high dose of prednisone can cause side effects such as enlarged pot belly appearance to the abdomen, and panting. Prednisone doses are usually decreased gradually over time to the least effective dose (lowest dose in which a benefit is still seen).
His prednisone dose was very high for a small dog. Have his liver enzymes checked again 3 weeks after he has discontinued with the prednisone. Prednisone dosage should always be the lowest effective dose. Prednisone can raise liver enzymes. If the liver enzymes are still elevated after the 3 weeks off the prednisone than the cause of the elevated liver enzymes should be found, if possible. If a cause cannot be found than adding some herbs and nutrients may help lower the elevations.
Decreasing to the lowest effective dose is very safe. Therefore if your dog takes a maintenance dose of 5 mg. every other day than this is very safe for a lab, and should not contribute to endocrine disorders, or joint problems. It would also be a good idea to place your dog on a good Glucosamine and Chrondroitin supplement. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are also very effective as maintenance or treatment for Disk disease.
-) Benadryl does not contain prednisone. And I am willing to be that it was the pred that helped your dog the most: it is known in vet-circles as a 'miracle drug' because it can be used to heal alot of things. I just googled temeril-p and here is what I found: Composition Each tablet contains trimeprazine tartrate (USP) 10-[3-(Dimethylamino)-2-methylpropyl] phenothiazine tartrate (2:1) equivalent to trimeprazine, 5 mg, and prednisolone, 2 mg.
She is on 1/4 tab of Prednisone (5mg) and on Clavamox for 8 days and will be starting Zeniquin 25 mg 1/4 tab daily. I wish i could show you a pic of her skin it looks horrible. It started at 4 months old and she is now 14 months old. The vet said she has pemphigus fol autoimmune disease. But could have hypothyroidism or something else. She gained 14 oz she is 3.13 chihuahua.
Julie (our mini Poodle 9 yrs. old) had Cushings for quite a few years before it was confirmed in Feb. 09. She was tested 4 yrs. ago & it was negative but I never believed that. Julie started Trilostane 22.5 mg. in March. She was doing better in June with the blood test numbers & than got another attack of Pancreatitis, in 6 mos. time. She stayed at the Vets for 4 days & came home better.
Other common side effects include difficulty sleeping, vertigo, increased appetite, indigestion, and mood changes. The prednisone should be out of your system a couple of days after your last dose. You should consult your physician as soon as possible if you are still experiencing these symptoms.
The dose of prednisone really needs to be weaned down to allow for your adrenals to "remember" to start back working again. I'm a bit surprised that your doctor has given you the same dose to take for 30 days straight. Do you know, does he/she plan on then weaning you off the med or are you to just stop taking it after that?
I took a 6 day cycle of 20mg of prednisone for 7 days because my Dr. thought I had bronchitis. While I was on the medicine, I would have anxiety. And now that I am off of the medicine, it has gotten worse. I've never had anxiety and I am a very healthy 24 year old male. Will it take a while to get out of my system because I've never taken it before?
It is interesting that you mention you felt more anxious coming off the prednisone, which I think could mean 2 things. Since you upped the fluoxetine dose, it may have caused an inital agitation . This is one possibility . The second could be that whatever allergic reaction you have, your body must still be fighting it off and that is why you are agitated still. My understanding about fluoxetine is that it is very agitating out of all the SSRI's , Zoloft is the other.
My cat is on pred 5mg. twice a day for possible neuro problems.
Temaril P has a steroid in it called prednisone which can cause all the signs you are describing but these side affects are usually after long term use at a higher dose of prednisone than Temaril provides. If she had some of these signs before being medicated and she is 10 or older she should be worked up for Cushings disease and her heart should be checked for heart failure.
in her ear while at the same time loosing hair. My vet told me that she had mites and we need to increase the dose of worm medicine from one to two tablets (i.e Endolav 200mg). This did not work so we went to the pharmacist and they give me ivomec and I was told to give her 1ml every 7 days. I was also given a mix of sulphur and oil to rub on her. This worked for about a month and then she was in the same plight again.
I kept him on the supplement and he never had an allergy problem again. Higher doses of quality product are needed, more than what might be in processed dog foods. I used an excellent product from Omega Fields. I ordered on line. I can't speak for the effectiveness of any other brand but I was so impressed with CanineShine that I give the equine formula to my horse now and take the human formula myself!
For 2 months he has been having anywhere from 5 to 10 attacks a day, has been on prednisone 3 times in six months which I understand is dangerous to other aspects of his health. Are there any other options for him after prednisone is tried? He is miserable!! He also takes singulair, flonase, zyrtec, flovent and albuterol nebs, inhaler and liquid.
In other cases, skin pustules and crusts recur when immunosuppressive drugs are decreased or stopped, and in these cases medications such as prednisone and azathioprine are needed lifelong to control the disease, although usually at lower doses such as every 2-3 days. Prednisone typically causes elevated liver enzymes, and this effect is diminished as the dose is slowly decreased.
My 12 year old pug has been on prednisone for the past year, 1/4 tablet every day, because his arthritis was so bad Rimadyl was no longer giving him proper pain relief. I love my dog so much, it's painful to see him struggle to get out of bed, but he's a fighter and I don't want to be the one that ends the fight for him. I noticed he has gained weight with the Prendisone and he continues to struggle with mobility.
The dose sounds high to me also. My dog sligtly smaller than yours was put on pred. for a chronic condition. We were told to give him 40mg once a day. I am weigh a lilttle more than your dog I don't know how much diffrence there is between a person and a dog but I had to take 50mg once a day.
