Avatar f tn t just go giving any medication without even knowing what you are treating....prednisone use in cats often leads to diabetes. Please describe what's wrong and I will try and help with some suggestions, I know yr only trying to help them but inappropriate use of meds can be fatal...

Avatar n tn Hi there...a lot of veterinarians have issues with long term usage of steroids in dogs or cats. There is the possibility that continued use of prednisone can cause overactive adrenal glands resulting in too much cortisol in the body (this is one of the body's natural steroids). Since steroids suppress the immune system, llike zodiacqueen has mentioned, chronic recurrent infections can occur.
Avatar n tn what is the half life of oxycodone in cats? I've heard it works well for pain in cats. I'm trying to get more information on what may help my 12 year old cat. I'd like to have my questions in order before I pay my/her vet?
910930 tn?1242959206 I'd suggest to give her the Prednisone first thing in the morning. It's like for humans I believe and humans take Prednisone at 7AM. Side effects will probably be the same than for humans: a voracious appetite! Try to dose her dry food daily so she only eats the amount the is supposed to eat. She may be hyper at first as well. She may also get bloated. Long term side effects: diabetes, osteoroposis.
Avatar f tn I totally agree with Opus88's comments. You should not be dosing your kitty. Dosing should always be left to the vet who, after all, is an animal doctor.
Avatar f tn When we got Harley he was with a group of cats that were living in the woods. I was able to capture him and two others. All three of them had such bad teeth problems that after a time they had all their teeth pulled except for one cat, they left him four. The vet was unable to determine how old they were because of the poor teeth. I would think it would take maybe four years to have them get so bad, guessing, so that would make Harley 12 now.
1523893 tn?1301579774 Last week my neuro put me on a 3 day dose of Prednisone to hopefully offset the flare I was in the middle of. He put me on 3 days of oral pred, quite a huge dose (25 pills per day, each being 50 mg). I took my three days worth of pills hoping I would see a difference, but have yet to feel any better. In fact I am worse and I am wondering if I should see a physician about my symtoms. Weight gain, no energy, facial swelling, horrible fog, painful skin on my neck and shoulders.
1580703 tn?1651904887 there is an online researcher video that says prednisone destroys neurons in the hippocampus and shouldn't be given to stroke victims I'm already having brain damage, fog from sleep apnea and 73% O2 at night so I don't know if klonopin and prednisone helps or actually causes brain damage
514349 tn?1272801633 Two weeks ago, I had one of my 16 year old cats to the vet. She palpated a mass in his abdomen and couldn't tell if it was a tumor or something that would pass (if you get my drift). She suggested I wait a while and bring him back to see if it was still there. The follow-up was this morning and the vet's assistant (trainee) indicated that the mass was still there and said it was likely lymphoma. She advised that an ultrasound was in order to properly diagnose the issue.
Avatar n tn He was originally started on Alkeran once a week and prednisone every other day but the Alkeran had an extremely negative effect on his CBC and made no improvement on his globulin levels. In Oct he was started on Luekeran 2mg every other day and prednisone on the off days. He takes his prednisone in a liquid form and that was originally about 1 1/4 cc's and that was dropped to about half after one month. After 4 weeks on Luekeran his globulin came down from nearly 11 to 9.

608104 tn?1352587153 November 10 2012 Finally realized that,as a 70 year crone with "mild cognitive disordered" older brain, that dosing with prednisone for viral respiratory infection results in mood swings not well stabilized. I then join new clubs excited to meet wonderful people until the side effects wear off. I expected diagnosis of viral infections with treatment with anti-viral medications. I got my Fluzone influenza vaccine last month and.a TDAP booster. TDAP is not covered by Medicare.
262527 tn?1285381659 Part of achieving tissue levels is how fast the med gets into the body. In oral dosing the absorption is slower. Also, the amount of oral Prednisone needed to equal the IV dose is 1200mg. A typical high dose is 60mg to 80mg. There would likely be a great deal of stomach upset. So, all the way around, the oral dose would seem to be a poorer choice for the action that is needed. I, too, am sorry no one got back to you.
Avatar n tn In a recent study, 30% of the cats positive for heartworms were reported to be indoor only cats - so all cats are susceptible. A heart ultrasound would also help diagnose the problem and determine the best treatment. This heart ultrasound can also look for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)- a common heart problem in cats. Our office cat developed signs of this at age 8, but not much cough was present at that time.
Avatar n tn She had been losing weight, but other than that was just as mischievous and energetic as always. Has anyone had experience with lymphoma in cats and has anyone experienced having their cat treated for it?. Thanks for any info.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your input. I am assuming that the hives are caused by my cats, I did not discuss with my medical oncologist yet. I was wondering when my WBCs get normal, will I no longer have this allergy. From what I'm seeing on your response, if it is an allergy to my cats, It will not go away. I've had my cats 10 years and never had an issue prior to chemo?
Avatar f tn My cat had an abscess on his back - which I have enough experience with to treat myself. I have owned cats for 30 years. I have been able to clear and heal the wound and have been dosing him with amoxicillin. He seems to have an allergy to this antibiotic as I have discovered hes been throwing up in the basement. This is the usual drug I use to treat abscess-type infections and I want to make sure the interior infection clears up.
Avatar m tn There are charts showing breakdown by age, gender, timing with respect to dosing in the following link. http://www.ehealthme.
Avatar m tn I had tests done which showed I have major allergies to cats. My ex-wife was a cat breeder and we had 5 to 8 cats living in the house at any given time. I moved out in 2005 and have since lived in 3 other residences. All with no cats or pets of any kind but the symptoms are still with me; Like you, my sinuses drain at night which is where my breathing and chest problems come from. I’ll check into the Guafenisen .
Avatar f tn Surgery is not the best option since poor wound healing a part of the disease try to do fine needle aspirations instead much quicker and easier healing. My advice do your research and have questions written down. Ask if they have had any patients with GM and if so treatment plans and success. Ask about their opinion and options. You must advocate for yourself sometimes so don't be afraid to ask question or get a second opinion.
