Plavix half life

Common Questions and Answers about Plavix half life

plavix

Avatar n tn Plavix is a very strong medication. They give it to you even if you have 1 to 10 percent blockage, and in spite of abnormal bleeding, like me. I wish they would stop it.
Avatar n tn I believe it is about 24 hours for alcohol to almost completely leavce the system...alcoholics may have a different half-life to their consumption of alcohol !? ..obvioulsly your husband doesn't fit that description otherewise you would already know the answer. Enjoy the holidays. Take care.
Avatar f tn My Cardiologist tells me just 24 hours is necessary because Plavix only has a half life of around 6 hours. So a 75mg daily dose would mean 38mg after 6 hours, 19mg after 12 hours and obviously just 4-5mg after 24 hours which is very low. In fact I had 2 teeth pulled on Monday this week and stopped my Plavix Sunday morning in preparation. My bleeding stopped very quickly and I was back on plavix 3 hours after.
Avatar m tn This drug has a half life of 3-7 hours. Half life of a drug is the time it takes for 50% of the drug to be excreted by the body. Based on a 50mg dose there would be 3-4 half lives to excrete the drug. Max time of a little over 28 hours to have it completely gone from your system. If your symptoms continue, especially increased BP, you should give your Dr a call.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I suggested to him to ask his doctor if he could take half of his plavix meds for two weeks JUST TO SEE if that was the cause of his chest pain and the doctor outright refused to do that and bullied him that a clot would form on his stent if he tried to do this.
Avatar m tn I also have eight stents, they are in all three major heart arteries, seven of them were inserted within eighteen months about six years ago. Half of my stents are drug-elluting, half are bare-metal. I was also told initially I would be on Plavix the rest of my life. However, I really worked hard to change my risk factors... of course I didn't smoke, I quit eating red meat, lost a great deal of weight, took the good drugs recommended by my doctor, and exercised daily.
1210142 tn?1266077031 I think plavix is very important for CAD sufferers. The half life of plavix is short anyway, so if it came to some emergency, it wouldn't take long for the effect to wear off.
Avatar f tn The half-life of a drug is how long it takes for half of it to be eliminated from the bloodstream. Hope that helps.
6298176 tn?1380134459 It has a very long half life, though I can't give you specifics. The dose and how long you were on it does factor in. Your doctor should be able to help you with your questions on this.
976897 tn?1379167602 I had to take 81mg of aspirin for five years along with 81mg of aspirin. I talked my doctor out of the plavix prescription recently, so I'm going on just 81mg of aspirin. Congratulations, Ed on the good report.
Avatar n tn I had a heart attack in 2001 and had 3 stents implanted. My internist and cardiologist both said I would be on Plavix for the rest of my life. I tried taking aspirin with it and it caused me to have internal bleeding, so of course it was discontinued. Now I would only take aspirin if I felt that I was having another heart attack. The latest precaution about Plavix is to not take omeprazole with it (Prilosec, Prevacid or Nexium). Hope that helps, but you really need a cardiologist.
Avatar m tn t know what the new iinterest in plavix if any, I read sometime ago, it is recommended for a life time for heart patients. Then plavix with aspirin for dual therapy of DES for a year, Then more than a year for DES implants. I believe one can find any information they may want to hear about plavix as a medication. Aspirin from what I read recently is 81 mg, that is what I take. Personally, I wouldn't take a heavy dose of anti-platelets.
Avatar m tn This discussion topic is a slippery slope of thoughts, studies, and opinions. I have both bare-metal and drug eluding stents in place, four of each, and took Plavix for twelve years. I was asked to take the drug not only to keep clots from forming in my stents, but also to maximize blood flow in what are called collateral arteries, little ones that develop to help supply damaged areas of the heart.
Avatar m tn It wasn't normal in 2007, but is becoming more common now to be put on plavix for life. It was generally believed that there is no benefit from plavix after a year, but evidence is mounting that shows clots can form quite rapidly if taken off this medication after that time. I'm not sure about 2xplavix pills a day, but I take an aspirin and a plavix, 75mg of each.
Avatar n tn I have a drug eluting stent implanted in 2006. I have now been on Plavix and aspirin for over three years. The cardiologist says I will be on it for "life". If the use of Plavix and aspirin can be eliminated after 2 to 4 months of the implantation of a bare metal stent, why can't Plavix and aspirin be eliminated after a year? At what point does the drug eluting process stop so that the drug eluting stent becaomes the same as a bare metal stent?
Avatar n tn If you are referring to Plavix (clopidogrel) and Aspirin, I would take them for life. The general rule used to be aspirin for life, plavix for a year. However, more and more cases of forming clots in stents were appearing when plavix was stopped, so now the general trend is changing towards life.
Avatar f tn They should be taking blood tests to make sure her clotting factor is as required. I assume she is on aspirin daily also? Aspirin is for life, but once plavix is eventually stopped, the clotting factor does increase. I have noticed no real problems on plavix. I think the only problem comes if you require further surgery. Stenting is fine with plavix, they gave me 600mg before my last angioplasty.
Avatar f tn I was also advised to stop Plavix about three weeks ago, and have no problems. I was kept on the drug for three years after my last stent because I went through a very, very active CAD period resulting in multiple stents. I was told I might have to be on it for life, but the fact that I haven't had a blockage since 2007 and my blood is thinned very well with just one 81mg aspirin. I'm delighted.
Avatar n tn After my initial stent I was taken off plavix after 2 years and had no problems at all. I am obviously on aspirin for life.
Avatar m tn depending on the type of stent you get and how bad your cad is will determine how long you stay on certain meds, like plavix some people take it for a year after a DES I have to take plavix for life. then there is other meds you may have to take depending on circumstances. i take metorporol, plavix, vytorin, lisinipril and a couple others for the rest of my life to help keep me from another heart attack, diet and excercise will help the most though.
315318 tn?1353251800 If like Plavix, I have to take Effient for life then I guess, unlike Plavix, I will be paying a lot of out of pocket expense for a long time to come ! This discussion is related to Plavix dosing following drug eluting stents.
Avatar f tn I agree with you...my dad was taken off plavix due to a bad bladder infections which caused some bleeding. He was taken off and withing a month and a half had a min-Tia-stroke-episode. He's back on it...Thank God he's doing better.
Avatar n tn My husband has a pacemaker and 8 metal stents. He's been taking Coumadin and Plavix for the past 4-5 years since his last stent was put in. Recently he was rushed to the hospital with blood in his vomit and stools. They said he had last 60% of his blood and immediately preceeded to give him blood, total 9 pints. After much reading up on ulcers and his medicine's side-effects, we discovered that Plavix causes ulcers. He was bleeding from a huge ulcer in his stomach.
