old mom had been on plavix for about 2 months when she began having severe diahreea, nausea and loss of appetite. Is it possible for this to be a side effect of plavix even though she has been on the med for 2 months with no problem? She often has difficulty tolerating medications. She was diagnosed with a bacterial infection but after 2 rounds of antibiotic the symptoms return after abouit 2-3 days of feeling better. .

In CURE, Plavix use with aspirin was associated with an increase in major bleeding (primarily gastrointestinal and at puncture sites) compared to placebo with aspirin. The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (0.1%) and fatal bleeding (0.2%) were the same in both groups.
Plavix is a blood thinner and I didn't know it affected pressure? Anyway, dental cleaning can produce a tiny amount of gum bleeding and will not produce any problems. I have my teeth cleaned every 6 months and it soon stops bleeding. The problems come if you need a tooth removed. Flycaster is correct, your dentists should always have a list of current medication.
I have heard that there is some problem mixing vitamin K with a blood thinner. I am taking 75 mg of plavix and cannot find anything about the vitamin K interaction. I need additional calcium, and the brand I am looking at taking would give me 40mcg of vitamin K. Is this safe or a problem? Where can I find how much vitamin K is in a serving of broccoli or spinich?
Please note that the article mention plavix as used as "prevention of stroke" here we are speaking of Plavix to avoid restenosis and clots in the case that you have medical stents implanted. The situation is quite different.
He had an allergic reaction to something following the last angioplasty----swelling of jaw, face, and generalized swelling and itching all over. That has resolved but starting suddenly 2 weeks after the last procedure, he has severe, generalized joint stiffness and pain. His right knee is swollen and very painful. The only thing new since his angioplasties is that he was placed on Plavix.
Could this be from Plavix? Would this have anything to do with the allergic reaction?
t take the Plavix for personal reasons, and I always forget my aspirin. I did some goggling and found this bit in an article. It suggests that Plavix is an alternative. Not sure if that is correct or not.

I have both DES and drug eluting stents and have had heart attacks, and took Plavix for several years. About a year ago I went off Plavix and have not experienced a heart attack or restinosis. I remain on 81mg aspirin.
While still taking Plavix, I had the misfortune of developing a bowel obstruction which required emergency surgery. The fact that I was was taking Plavix was a major concern, and the surgery took place expecting bleeding problems.
I think I may have had a TIA witnessed by someone in the family. I have no recall and it lasted 30 seconds. I now have severe post op problems i.e. tearing, dry eyes, bluury vision and trying to focus reading up close. (I was nearsighted prior to C. removasl but now I do not know what i am) I also have two large viteous detachements and the peft peripheral vision is affected. Yes, they tell me I got 20-20 vision and I have been procalimed as 100% success. This is not true as I cannot see with all the post-op problems.

While I agree Plavix caused me problems, my RUQ episode was textbook biliary colic. 4 years ago after pregnancy I had a week of clay-colored stools and RUQ pain after eating potato chips. No labs were done and US found no stones. I avoided fatty foods for years and had no other problems until now. I also had one recent episode 8 weeks ago involving taking IB & APAP over 5 days for sore throat where I got bruising, fatigue, frequent urination, and muscle weakness.
My husband had his first heart attack in November 2006 and took plavix for one year. At that time the doctor took him off plavix and then just four short months later he suffered another heart attack with much heart damage. We questioned this as he had placed two stents at the time of his first heart attack, but he said the new thinking was to stop the plavix after one year. He did no further testing or anything.
I had angioplasty in 2001 and had a stent implant. My cardiologist prescribed Plavix and 81 mg aspirin daily among the other medications (beta blocker, ACE inhibitor, statin). I have recently moved to a new city and have not found a new cardiologist yet but family physician suggested that Plavix could be discontinued as the guidelines have changed and no long recommended after 12 months post stent implant.
Suggestions please?
I was also advised to stop Plavix about three weeks ago, and have no problems. I was kept on the drug for three years after my last stent because I went through a very, very active CAD period resulting in multiple stents. I was told I might have to be on it for life, but the fact that I haven't had a blockage since 2007 and my blood is thinned very well with just one 81mg aspirin. I'm delighted.
