Common Questions and Answers about Omeprazole rebound effect

prilosec

Avatar f tn I took omeprazole in 2021and 2022, after taking it three times a week in months of November 2022 through my last day was on January 20th 2023. My acid reflux has started to come back in June and still here now. I had no problems in months of February through May. Is it possible for my reflux to come back because i was not taking omeprazole in those months? I started taking it again on June 14th (doctors orders). I just find it weird that it just all the sudden came back.
1709162 tn?1314084832 U should have stepped off the omeprazole, and u can suffer what is called rebound effects....the med stops the stop acids from being produced, and when u stop taking the meds, u begin to make too much of the acid...and y it is better to slowly step down off these meds...so I understand how u feel, but for testing I also understand y u had to stop them...it is just an uncomfortable couple of days..... I would ask for a ph test....and see if u have a hiatal hernia...
Avatar m tn Was put on omeprazole while investigating bronchitis symptoms with final diagnosis from biopsy of Langerhans histiocytosis in 2009. Only on oxygen 24:7 with no complications to date.. Seriously want to get off omeprazole. Will going off impact lung problem now that we it is Langerhans and not bronchitis?
Avatar n tn I've been taking 40mg. of prilosec for 3 weeks. Now taking just 20mg. I want to stop taking it, how do I wean myself off? I've read you get a rebound reaction which is worse than the hearburn. I can't cut the pills in half because they are time release.
Avatar m tn I am a woman in her late 30's. I have been taking omeprazole for 2 years now. I was instructed to take it by a ENT doctor for healing of my esophagus due to acid erosion(scarring) caused by silent reflux. (Diagnosed via endoscopy) I have noticed a decrease in hunger, lack of "growling" of the stomach. Has anyone else experienced this? Is long term use of omeprazole really safe?
Avatar m tn I have decided to stop taking the aspirin, which I haven’t taken in about a week anyways. This “rebound effect” that can result in clotting due to suddenly stopping aspirin has got me a little worried. Is this a legitimate concern or am I worrying for no reason? I understand the negative effects of stopping aspirin are mostly in the 4 weeks or so after stopping due to platelets becoming “more sticky”. How long after stopping aspirin does the blood “normalize”?
Avatar m tn Some pain relievers such as NSAIDs may have abdominal pains as side effect because they can interact with your gastric processes. Try to avoid taking too much over-the-counter pain reliever because this may also cause rebound headaches. Ice pack and identification of triggers (using the headache/migraine tracker of medhelp) may provide relief. Knowing the triggers (food, weather climate, etc) will help in migraine prevention.
1709162 tn?1314084832 I have just finished this treatment and I am doing well, though I am now on probiotics , yogart, aloe and will continue for several more months, along with a daily PPI due to rebound effect. I will be retested in 30 days to see if I am clear. H.
Avatar m tn Hi. I am taking omeprazole for laryngopharyngeal reflux for the past 2 days. I am supposed to take two pills daily, one before breakfast and one before dinner. Today, i started having this feeling that food is stuck in my chest and back of my throat but I don't have any problems swallowing. It is an uncomfortable feeling in my chest. I did not have this symptom prior to starting the drug. Is this a side effect of the drug?
170935 tn?1225371076 Burning in the throat is a sign of LPRD. LPRD is when the acid doesn't stick to your chest and goes all the way up your throat, even to the back of the mouth. This can cause coughing, post nasal drip, ear aches, tongue burning, the feeling of a lump in your throat, and other symptoms. If you've just suddenly had to come off the meds, then you might be feeling a rebound effect. Some say it doesn't happen, others differ.
Avatar f tn have no history of allergies, and I do not have GERD (gastritis only). Could this be a side effect of the omeprazole? I looked it up, but do not see this as a listed side effect anywhere.
Avatar f tn My consultant has taken me off omeprazole and replaced it with ranitidine due to the fact that my magnesium is low, and is making my calcium low too. Has anyone else had experience of this change, and if so, how has your body reacted to it.
Avatar m tn My surgery has now substituted 2x 20 mg capsules, they do not appear to work and are a nightmare against taking 40 mg dose. I have a faulty valve aand have relied on this drug for the past 10 years without any side effect.
Avatar m tn My very excellent neurologist told me that Frova and Amerge are the ONLY triptans that do not cause the rebound effect as they have more of a half-life. The other triptans can then be used once a week. NO over the counter pain meds like Advil- those cause rebounds too. My neuro gave me Ultram, which is a better choice for chronic and frequent headaches.
Avatar m tn Vasoconstrictors that are in eye drops like Visine, Cleareyes, etc cause rebound effect. They are not safe for long term use. I've used Euphrasia (eyebright) before and it makes my eyes feel so fresh and also gets rid of redness. I've been doing research on this herb and I've read that it shrinks tissue. I want to get a doctor's thought on the long term use of this herb. This herb helps with my eye allergies and that is why I want to use it.
Avatar m tn It’s been three weeks and it’s not as bad, but the problem still going on. I have read this is the drug’s rebound. How long should this last? I am really mad, because I think this drug was prescribed unnecessarily. I was 39 and in excellent physical condition.
Avatar f tn This is day 4, and I am on 10 mg.of omeprazole. The first two days were terrible, the third fine now the fourth is terrible.

Avatar f tn I have been treated for silent reflux by taking 40 mg of omeprazole 45 minutes before supper for last four months. I have just started tapering down to 20mg. I also take acebutolol for premature heart beats 200mg 2x a day. My husband swears by unsulphured black strap molasses for his reflux and arthritis in his hands. I would love to try it but I have read foods rich in potassium are to be avoided with beta blockers. Blackstrap is rich in potassium and iron. I have also considered DGL tablets.
Avatar n tn It is easy to find information regarding drug-drug interactions for omeprazole (Prilosec) and atorvastatin (Lipitor). The omeprazole appears to increase the bioavailability of the statin, increasing the risk of side effects. Does this mean that the interaction is like taking a higher dose of the statin, which would provide benefit for someone like me who only takes a low dose (10mg atorvastatin daily) and has no statin tolerance issues?
Avatar f tn I was recently told that even a single dose of OTC or pain killers can cause a rebound headache. I also have chronic daily headaches as well as a few migraines each week. Can the ER cocktail of Benadryl, Toradol, Zofran, Reglan, ativan ,and decadron potentially cause a rebound effect. There's some weeks, I'm in the ER 2-3 times per week . Some months, I don't go at all. At home, Ido not take anything except amlodapine and valium twice a day.
Avatar n tn Quoting each of your concerns: "I have chest pains, ectopic heartbeats,a tight & clicky throat (like asthma at night), and I've had a persistent wheezy high pitched cough for months." This all points to GERD. ectopics 30 times per day is a good day for me. :-) that's not many. recovery PVCs (after you exercise) is common. Search on google for more info on these, under "recovery PVCs". You might not like some of the research but it is what it is.
