how does omeprazole work

Hi, For the past couple of years I have had Acid Reflux and have been on 40mg of Omeprazole ever since. The last year or so breakthrough symptoms have taken place. I rarely if ever get conventional heartburn, but I have a constant burn in the back of my throat. Best guess where the throat waterfalls down in terms of location.

Omeprozole is not a narcotic pain killer. It is a heartburn med that isn't much different than over the counter Prilosec. I've never heard of it being administered via I.V. Omeprazole does nothing except preventing heartburn.

At first my wife had urinary infection, few weeks later she started to have fever and stomach problems, the docter told her it was a gastroenteritis. I bought her omeprazole and gave her amoxicilline, that worked. She felt fine, but few weeks later she had urinary infection symptoms again. The doctor gave her antibiotics again, that helped her.

I have to stop omeprazole two weeks before a blood test to see if i have coeliac. Previous blood tests shoe that i'm anaemic & have low vitamin b12 levels. Does anyone know how long omeprazole take before it gets out of your system. I would appreciate any ideas or if anyone has the same thing...

my dr prescribed Protonix to me and I wondering how often does someone have dizziness from it and how long does it usually last? I haven't taken it yet due to that. Also I tried omeprazole otc and it gave me headaches. Does that mean I'm more likely to have side effects from Protonix?

I have been desperately trying to quit Omeprazole for the last 5 years but have had so much problem with extreme acid release it seems I'll be with it for my life. Of course noone knows yet the result of taking omeprazole for a lifetime, mice had cancer after weeks but human might as well after decades. I can't replace omeprazole with ranitidine, as the latter doesn't seem to work at all. I've been able to lower the dose to about one 20mg in two days but not more.

My doctor says I have esophagitis, and prescribed for me 20 mg omeprazole for 4 weeks. I am taking it now for 6 days and don't see any improvement yet. The drug reviews say it usually takes up to 4 days to feel better. Is this the case, or may it take longer time to see results? Thanks.

If you think you might have acid reflux and your doctor gave you omeprazole to take and you take it but dont actually have acid reflux would that hurt you or just do nothing?

How you take your medicine is a matter of personal preference, PPIs are generally most effective when taken 1/2hr before the day's first meal (or drinks), however.

Esomeprazole (Nexium) is slightly different than omeprazole (Prilosec). But your body could react the same way. You could try a small amount and see. There are some combo otc drugs by Rolaids and others that have an antacid and famotidine (acid reducer). Those probably don't work as well.

hi i been take omoprazole since dicember ,now from 2 month i take any other day ,i have very mild reflux with erniajale,i alway burp even when i wake up and my stomach is empty ,for how long i shold take omeprazole?

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum. Antibiotics can trigger symptoms to worsen.....have you modified your diet and lifestyle? Talk to your Dr to explain your concerns and see what other options you may have....for me PPI's like omeprazole did not work for me and I switched to H2b and they work great.

I went back to the stomach doctor for a check up and she told me to stop taking the omeprazole and take something less strong like zantac. I was off Omeprazole for maybe three weeks when one night in March 2010 I ate some chips and some strawberries and I ended up getting sick. I started taking the Omeprazole again hoping it would ease my stomach discomfort. It hasn't.

Anyone taking Omeprazole? Does it work? Nothing has stayed down for two days and it hurts after I eat. It hurts not to eat. Has anyone been successful on this Med??

I have 5 days till my due date and baby doesnt seem to want to come any time soon. The doctor said is I went to 41 weeks they would probably induce me. How exactly does that work? I thought it was just some kind of medicine they gave you through an IV but a friend said something about them sticking a needle up there. Im a little freaked out, could someone please explain it to me?
