If you or your doctor wants to raise the HDL faster by using prescription medications, niacin would be the drug to use. Most of the time it is hereditary. Do you have siblings? Do you know their HDL levels? Dark chocolate and salmon raise HDL along with fish oil. Processed meats are the worse thing to eat i.e. deli meat, hotdogs, brats. Smoked meats are not good either which includes ham. Stay away from any organ meat, which is in a lot of the processed meats. Look for labels stating Omega 3 when buying food. nothing just HDL getting lower and lower. i researched and started taking fish oil with omega 3. in 6 months taking it everyday with my morning juice. my LDL went from 138 to 114, my HDL from 28 to 38, my TCh 184 to 168 and my ratio went from 6.6 to 4.3. i realize my situation is not as serious as yours, however my mother is a 85 lb toothpick and eats very little, yet her cholesterol too is a little over.

The only prescription I take is Atenolol for PAC's/PVC's 25 mg. It seems that this can possibly reduce HDL levels. I take CoQ10 and fish oil everyday (good brands). I am considering adding more vitamin C, zinc, and tribulus terrestris to my supplements, as these appear to help with testosterone and HDL. Obviously, make sure I get exercise, have a good diet, and maybe have some red wine daily. I don't eat much fast food and I plan on cutting out more sugar and carbs from my diet.
