Omega 3 and hdl

Common Questions and Answers about Omega 3 and hdl

omega-3

Avatar f tn I've purchased galic and parsley tablets as well as Omega 3-6-9 tablets in the hope of getting my colesterol levels to a normal numbering. But today I read that Omega 6 isn't that good as it could counter the effect of Omega 3 and induce inflammation. Now I"m wondering if I just spent 30$ for nothing. What do you think?
Avatar f tn Avoid foods that contain saturated and Trans fats as they raise LDL cholesterol and damage your blood vessels. Nuts, fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in changing your LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio. Adopt lifestyle changes. Exercise daily and avoid smoking and alcohol ingestion. These all will help. Do keep me posted. Best luck and regards!
Avatar m tn These are found in things like olive oil, peanut butter, avocado oil. Cranberry juice increases HDL as does omega 3 fatty acids, found in fish and some other foods. Don't listen to any remarks regarding calcium supplements because this doesn't seem to improve HDL in men or post menopausal women. I hope that's given some help.
Avatar n tn That could make a difference. Good news is chocolate especially dark chocolate raises HDL along with Omega 3. Buy omega 3 eggs and salmon is very good at raising HDL.
Avatar n tn Salmon, dark chocolate raise HDL levels. Look for Omega 3 in your foods. For men the HDL is lower than for women. You should try to get your HDL at least in the thirties if not higher. You can ask your doctor about fish oil also. A good multi-B vitamin is good for the heart and nervous system.
Avatar m tn Welcome and thanks for your question! The key to lowering VLDL is to lower your TGLs as it is calculated as 20% of your serum triglycerides. The best way to lower TGLs is to cut back on empty carbs that metabolize as sugar. This includes breads, pasta, sugar filled items and alcohol. Also, processed foods have a high amount of bad fats that will increase your TGLs. Another secret, stay away from sodas as they are high in sugar.
Avatar m tn I would work to improve your numbers through life style changes at this point. Your concerns should be increasing your HDL which you can do through exercise, diet and using supplements such as Omega 3's and Niacin. Your Tri's are also high but can be brought in line by cutting empty carbs like breads, pastas sugars. If this fails I would consider a statin as you have a family history of heart disease in your family. Also, did you mean that your fasting blood sugars were over 200?
Avatar m tn Fish oil pills are an excellent way to raise your HDL and lower LDL due to the high content of the Omege 3 fatty acids that they contain. Anything that has a high Omega 3 content will have this effect, such as flax seed. Most commercial eggs are commonly high in Omega 6 fatty acids due to the fact that they are raised in cages and eat the seeds of plants that have a high Omega 6 content. Omega 6 fatty acids have the effect of raising LDL levels in the blood.
Avatar n tn I think the internet is the worst place for me as since getting my cholesterol tests back i am a wreck and have not been to work.. My total was 148.. Triglycerides were 52. Ldl was 100 but the hdl was only 37.. This has thrown me into a tizzy thinking I am a walking time bomb as keep reading all about hdl hdl.. I am 37 years old, do not smoke. i don't eat any fish , nuts , eggs .etc.. the doctor told me not to worry, said take some omega 3's and it will go up..
Avatar m tn Your numbers are fine. Your HDL is low but so is your LDL so the two cancel each other out. You may want to talk to your doctor about adding some omega 3 to build your HDL, other than that you're good. As far as your tri's go, you may want to take a fibrate, ask your doctor. Tri's are easy to control by cutting your sugars and empty carbs like breads and pastas.
Avatar m tn Avoid empty carbs like sugars, pasta and breads. Also, ask your doctor about starting Omega 3 fatty acids like fish oil and while you're at it as about an exercise program that is right for you. Again, your numbers are a little high, but certainly not bad enough for meds. I calculate your Tri's somewhere around 75 which is also very good. So just eat right and exercise and you should be fine. Congrats on the numbers.
Avatar n tn i only symptom i really have is being tired and sometimes i get dizzy at work..... but i have had the dizziness on and off for many years.. its not even really dizziness its more off balance.... but now i am not sleeping good at night and i do not know if its because i am worried... they say a womens should be over 50 so mine is 13 points under.. i was eating a lowfat diet and more carbs .. i wasn't eating any omega 3's fish nuts or anything like taht...
Avatar n tn m betting you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Hdl levels increase with aerobic exercise, and also Omega 3 fish oil will raise hdl levels as well.
Avatar m tn m putting this on here is because I take Barleans Flax Oil caps (four a day, not very many), and Nordic Naturals Omega 3 caps (7 per day). The high HDL would seem to indicate these are being assimilated, which is the hardest part of taking supplements -- finding a brand that actually is absorbed well. So just wanted to let everyone know. Also wanted to comment on PSA testing, or Prostate Specific Antigen. This is a test used to determine if a person might have prostate cancer brewing.
422924 tn?1331764319 t think you should go any lower on your LDL unless you have heart disease or some major risk factors. Also, your HDL is great as well. You can increase it with Omega 3 fatty acids like fish oil. Also, staying natural with fruits and veggies and staying away from processed foods will help your LDL if you do need to lower it. Overall, I think your numbers are great, nice job!
Avatar m tn Fish oil. Omega 3.
720228 tn?1530911279 How much omega 3, 6, 9? just had my cholestrol checked and it was 255. I am also starting prevastation. I know that you can not be pregnant while on this medication but if you happen to become pregnant while taking it I know to stop it immediately. What if any are the risks of taking this medication during the first two to three weeks of pregnancy since it takes that long to find out that you are pregnant?
Avatar m tn Well aerobic exercise, losing weight, avoiding saturated fats and taking mono-unsaturated fats helps raise HDL levels. Other than this omega-3 fatty acid supplements and niacin can also help raise the HDL levels but ask your doctor before starting this. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn It is recommended that all Trans fats and saturated fats are not consumed, but omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats can be eaten. To break that down simply it means nuts, seeds, and peanut/olive oils can be eaten. Suggest having them eat a moderate fat diet to help lower their cholesterol. Moderate fat diet means = use polyunsaturated (omega 3, corn oil, nuts, etc) fats and monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc) fats, no saturated fats and no Trans fats.
Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor about taking Omega 3 fatty acids and niacin, both can help increase HDL.
503607 tn?1275671579 Do you have heart disease in your family history? This would play an important role in if you should start medication to improve your cholesterol numbers. When I dropped beef from my diet my LDL went down from 126 to 106 and when I stopped eating pork the LDL went down to 76. Recommended LDL for myself is 100 or below. Dark chocolate, salmon with the omega 3 raise HDL levels. Your HDL levels are low. The HDL should be in the 50's. Medication can help raise the HDL and lower the LDL.
Avatar m tn Your HDL can be raised further by consuming fish with omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon), consuming moderate amounts of red wine or increasing your aerobic exercise.
Avatar f tn 1% of claimed EPA Also found only 89% of claimed total omega-3 fatty acids and 83% of claimed total omega-7 fatty acids claimed Wellements PharmaOmega learn (250 mg EPA and 100 mg DHA per softgel, 2 per day) Spoilage (TOTOX value = 63.8) Pet: 1-800-PetMeds Super Omega 3 for Cats and Dogs (180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA per softgel, 1 per day) Exceeded limit for dioxin-like PCBs (Found 3.
Avatar m tn Instead of going for supplements, try eating Fish like sardines, mackeral & salmon which are rich in Omega 3 fats & lowers LDL/Triglycerides & increases HDL. You can also eat walnuts & Flakseed. These have worked wonders for me. I had a CABG done 4 months ago and I have made sure that my HDL & LDL levels are with the required parameters.
Avatar n tn I take the Omega Q Plus by Dr. Sinatra. Had not been consistent with it daily as I am now after I got my Cholesterol checked. My Low density was down and my Hds were up and tris were almost 200 below what they had been in years. I was elated over the tri report because it had been in the 400's in the past. Everything else checked out perfect. I will continue to take Omega 3 plus for another 3 months, and have it checked again.
Avatar m tn I have my LDL down to 79, HDL 54, and triglycercides 35. I did it with diet. Eat salmon for the omega 3 and to raise HDL levels. Eat fresh organic vegetables, brown rice, fruits. Eliminated beef from my diet 13 years ago (and prime rib was my favorite). Eliminated pork from my diet for 1 year, the LDL and triglyercides dropped more but became anemic so started eating pork once or twice a month now. My iron's up to 16 now. Drink plenty of water for energy and to avoid feeling tired.
Avatar n tn Up until around 12 years ago my hdl was in the high 50's. Then it went to the low 30's, where it has stayed. I have read and tried a variety of things. The hdl remains lower and is slowly going lower. Today in a screening it was 23. I have been very overweight but have lost 25 pounds. I exercise regularly. (I have NASH, GERD and sleep apnea.) I have never smoked as such.
