Metoprolol in hypertension

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol in hypertension

toprol

Avatar f tn Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and the mechanism of the agent is to dilate vessels to reduce hypertension. Metoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina and hypertension for high blood pressure. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. My regimen is Lisinopril and coreg (beta blocker).
Avatar n tn Propranolol and other medicines in its class are capable of evoking bronchospasm in people with asthma. Metoprolol is selective, but not entirely so; thus, asthma worsens in some people given this “selective” medicine and you may be one of them. Your doctor may have prescribed the metoprolol for both relief of the syncope and treatment of your hypertension. There are many other anti-hypertensive medicines that will control your hypertension without aggravating your asthma.
Avatar n tn Before any changes are made in the meds your need to talk to the doctor. Beta blockers like metoprolol and ACE inhibitors like benazepril have been been shown to be of value in patients with congestive heart failure as well as for hypertension. Simvastatin is of value for patients with both diabetes and heart disease. Talk to your doctor and changes can be made to minimize the side effects.

In terms of your white coat hypertension, we do know that having white coat hypertension is not something to ignore and I actually recommend treating people even with white coat hypertension because getting blood pressures in the 150's at any time are not good.
Avatar f tn I had a diagnosis of hypertension and tachycardia pre pregnancy which was controlled with lisinipril and metoprolol. After I became pregnant they switched my metoprolol to labetalol and took me off of lisinipril.Labetalol did NOT work! Long story short, over the eight and a half months I've had to stay on metoprolol and actually have it increased to 150mg twice a day. Hopefully that's all that I Will have to have as i approach the final weeks of this pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I was put on Amiodarone and Metoprolol. I was taken off the Amiodarone in late May. I went to the Cardiologist last week - I have shortness if breath while going up the stairs, walking uphill or exercising. he now took me off he Metoprolol. it has been almost a week and I still see no change. Has this happened to anybody else? Help!
1464004 tn?1384135733 If one goes in for an electrophysiology study, they will be told to discontinue Metoprolol (just) 3 days before the procedure as it's quickly removed from the body. So in your case, within 12 hours your original dose of 25mg has been greatly, but not completely metabolized when you take another 25mg. Slowly, you build up a therapeutic level.
Avatar f tn She switched me to 100mg ER Metoprolol to take in the morning and 20mg lisinopril for the night. I had to take my bp every day and went back every week. Every week it would be high at the dr Office and she would increase the lisinopril. Mind you, I didn't take prescription anything prior to this except maybe an antibiotic when needed. Now I'm on these high doses of bp meds. Initially I thought well I'll get used to them, there's always an adjustment time.
Avatar n tn Metoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. It seems to me if you have high blood pressure the medication should be taken regularily and not as needed. I don't know the effect it has on chest pain.
Avatar m tn I am a male in my 40's with elevated cholesterol, high triglycerides, slight hypertension and pre-diabetic. I do take crestor, tricor, and metformin to control those and they are now normal. I take Lisonopril for BP. A few days ago, I woke up from sleep with my heart racing, slight angina and feeling a bit dizzy. Went to the ER where they did a EKG, and echo and chest x-ray. None of them indicated any blockage. However, my HR didn't go down even when I was lying down and on IV fluids.
15860670 tn?1443541254 I had been on it for about 5 years in an attempt to control a rapid heartbeat issue that I had called SVT. It was also extremely effective in controlling my borderline hypertension. I eventually had a procedure to fix the SVT, but stayed on Metoprool fo the hypertension, and I'm remain on it today, but on the 75mg now. If I feel that the drug is beginning to build in my blood, I just stop a dose for a day or two.
Avatar f tn The Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate) tablet should not be cut in half. Doing so defeats it's time release properties. If you want to mess with dosages (and I don't think you should), the generic Metoprolol Tartrate (referred to as just Metoprolol) can be cut in half without a problem. I take an odd, 75mg. Per day; 50mg at dinner, and 25mg (half a pill) upon rising. Think of your dose level as a "starting dose level".
Avatar f tn RESISTANT HYPERTENSION....It feels like I am the only person in the world with this problem and that there is no answer. In other words, I am feeling pretty hopeless, but mostly scared at this piont. I have had it all my life and I am 58 years old. I have had so many TIA's over the years, but recently, I had a small stroke in my brain stem. .
Avatar f tn I had been smoking the synthetic marijuana regularly but all of a sudden one day I hit it once and my heart rate went to 220 bpm with significant increase in bp they say its just a panic attack but its been 5 months and I continue to have these episodes i'm being treated with Metoprolol 12.Mg bid and xanax 1 Mg bid. If I drink or smoke I tend to have bad episodes with pulse up to 160 and bp 160/100. I have had several EKG's and chest x rays and labs drawn with nothing found.
Avatar n tn Healthy 150 lb age 61, shaken when I had 1st recorded AFib Nov ’07 (after dental surgery) causing me to go on 25 mg. Atenolol (taken late evening) & aspirin ( already on Lisinopril keeping BP under 140/80). Appears Atenolol not good . All Dec light headed & had occasional Afib. Jan fainted one morning after awakin w/ low BP 90/58 after a night of AFib episode ( I was urinating frequently). Hindsight: totally stressed out. After the fainting, cardio ruled out plumbing/ valve.
Avatar m tn I do not want to be on this drug and feel there is no need for it. I have mild hypertension and proir to metoprolol was taking low dose of lisinopril which I am back on now.

I underwent a treadmill test. during second stage my BP rost to 170/100 from 140/90 and My HR went to 117. I had a flip in my heart and the doc stopped tread mill and said I have VT and refer me to a cardiologist. Did Angio and Echo all being normal. Avatar m tn im in the same boat 25mg metoprolol for 3 years 2nd week of 12.5 a day still have a little anxiety in late afternoon dr gave me xanex trying meditation and breathing hope it gets better next week when i go 12.
Avatar f tn Sorry to read of you heart problems. A HR of 120 at rest is indeed high, and you mention a muscle relaxer. You also mention hypertension and I wonder if you are on a beta blocker, e.g., Metoprolol. The BB family of medications reduce both blood pressure and heart rate and would seem to be in order for you. On the other hand, I know nothing about the physical heart condition you describe, seems no one else reading your post does either.
Avatar n tn 2) Do you suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension)? - In that case we need to start you on an alternate Blood Pressure lowering medication. 3) "A food sensitivity occurring months later" – has your physician confirmed that this is a side effect? This can have important implications on the treatment if the sensitivity and hives do not subside after stopping. Any way, you can stop the medication without tapering.
Avatar n tn I did ask my doctor if the metoprolol could be the cause and he did not seem to think so -- it might be as Brooke says, that the lower heart rate makes them more noticeable - my HR on metoprolol is in the 40s as my normal resting HR is about mid-50s. I have given up coffee and alcohol which has not made any difference. Hope things get better for you.
Avatar f tn t say what strength these pills were. They come in different strengths. Regardless, Metoprolol has a become regarded as a secondary medication for the treatment of hypertension. There are much better drugs available today to treat high blood pressure. Metoprolol is cheap, but that doesn't mean it should be prescribed when other, much better alternatives are available. Yes, you can stop immediately.
Avatar f tn Hello all, I have recently been having what i believe to be "heart palpitations." I am a 22 year old female and have been on Metoprolol since i was 16 (for hypertension) the dosage was upped a year ago from 25 mg to 50 mg. The palps have become more frequent as of late and i have severe anxiety as well. Whenever i have a palp i tend to get really anxious about it and panic. it seems to be a vicious circle. is there a way that the medication has caused this problem?
Avatar m tn Yes, Metoprolol Succinate is the timed release. It is also way more expensive than Metoprolol Tartrate. I switched long ago to the latter and saved a lot of money. A dose costs literally pennies. You have to remember to take it twice a day though. I take it at "5 and 5"; at rising, and at dinner, and it's easy to remember. Metoprolol has the same bradycardia effect as Atenolol, so that has to be watched.
Avatar f tn This spell lasted about 15 minutes, fast heart rate. Should the Losartan have stepped in where the Metoprolol left off and kept me from having a rebound effect? Can anyone comment on this or offer me any advice?
