Metoprolol and dry mouth

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol and dry mouth

toprol

Kathy, Thanks for the post. Q:" ... I believe you suggested an alternative medication - what was it and how does it differ from metoprolol?" Some of the medications that may be helpful (without any proof to demonstrate effectiveness) would be acebutolol or hyoscamine. Acebutolol is a beta-blocker with instrinsic sympathomimetic activity, so it tends to not slow the heart rate as much. Hyoscamine is a vagolytic, and is often used to treat nasuea.
So, my cardio took me off of the ramipril and put me on 12.5 mg of metoprolol twice a day and in addition to my 12.5 of HCTZ. However, after a week of feeling exhausted, having a resting heart rate consistently in the low 50s, and not much higher otherwise, I complained during my follow up. My cardio gave me some samples of 10 mg coreg to take once a day and a prescription to fill if the side effects from the metoprolol do not get any better.
I did try the Atenolol, Nadolol, they are not lipophilic and apparently do not produce CNS side-effects but they lower too much my blood pressure and didn't see a lot of difference between the side-effects from the water solube and lipophilic ones... They all make me tired, some of them are worse and the Bisoprolol and Metoprolol are the worse for me in term of side-effects. The half-life of the Metoprolol is between 3 to 7 hours...
Metoprolol side effects usually include dry mouth, constipation, heartburn, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm, headache, drowsiness, tired feeling, sleep problems or anxiety and nervousness. (ref: http://www.drugs.com/metoprolol.html) Nipple pain and tenderness have been documented but very rarely. Other factors that may have an effect may include hormone changes. Pain reliever medications and warm compress may help provide relief.
hello, i wonder if this dry mouth condition i am experiencing is something others have had after starting their heart meds. i'm taking zestril and metoprolol, having just dropped amioderone and lipitor. it mainly happens during the night but i don't think it's due to atmosphere or sleeping with an open mouth which are the only reasons my doctors have offered. this is not listed on my anticipated ones so i'm confused about it's source and worried about dehydration.
Could I have an autoinmune problem too? I have dry eyes, nose and mouth. My ANA tests 1 was positive and 2 were negative. I don't understand. Need help. I don't want to die young.
Dentist finally says I have Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) and starts talking about extracting numerous teeth and doing implants. Not acceptable. Dry mouth, headache, nausea, sweating, somnolence, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, pyrexia, sinusitis, rash, pruritus, bradycardia, tachycardia, hypertension, hypotension, spontaneous abortion. would this delay my seroconversion or window period? thx again and sorry for the bother.
What helps me sometimes is to make sure you breathe through your nose and not your mouth. And what does your doctor mean he can't help you? You mean with the IBS?
Your symptom of dry mouth is likely not related to the heart medications, but instead due to the high-dose of oxycodone and paxil is another culprit for dry mouth. Spironolactone, metoprolol and simvastatin do not typically cause dry mouth. I would talk to whoever is prescribing your anti-depressant and look into trying another one. There are many different anti-depressants. Also, if possible I would try to cut back on your oxycodone to see if that helps. You are on a very high dose.
As soon as I get into a place I get so dizzy and my vision is all messed up. I get so hot and sweaty and my heart races. I want my life back. I still dont believe that its just anxiety causing all of this. I feel like I have something else wrong that the doctors cant find even though i have had bloodwork, mri, ekg, and they were all normal. I started taking .25mg of xanax once a day. still dont feel any better yet. So if anybody has any help please give it to me.

I have been on both citalopram and prozac but citalopram was longterm weight gain, dry mouth and headaches and prozac major short term weight gain. Came of prozac for that reason after only a few months and wonder if it would've settled with time, or go back to the one i was on for 12 years but had some side effects including weight gain. Doc says my last option is mirtazapine but it is also an appetite stimulator.
I have not experienced much pain, but started coughing in May and experienced extremely dry mouth. Each visit they diagnosed (or tried) something different. Allergies, post nasal drip, acid reflux, virul pneumonia etc., etc., etc. Was put on antibiotics for 14 days, lost 15 pounds, got somewhat better, but cough did not go away.
In any event, my headaches are back with a vengeance because I stopped Propranolol and started on Metoprolol. Thank you both for your input and help. I really appreciate it since most of my doctors aren't that interested in my case and my family and friends don't understand what I'm going through...they're even getting sick of me being sick for so long!
He has got rid of dry mouth but that's about it.I am also on Metoprolol 50mg.for blood pressure and Premarin 2.5.If these stomach pains are from the new meds(side effects) will they go away?Anything else you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.
The sensation is as if my head and neck are throbbing with pressure and I have to stop walking or slow down and stop and stand still for a minute or so to make the sensation stop. Sounds are muffled in rhythm with the pulsations and I sometimes feel as if I will pass out, but never have. There is no pain. I have been checked throughly by my GP, a cardiologist, and an electrophysiologist and none of them could find a cause.
I think everything is over and I clean up. I walk out of the toilet and in about 2 minutes time the stomach cramp and the fainting sensation comes back (I've fainted only once to date from this and was out for about 15-20 minutes). 6. When I get back to the toilet I have a really violent Diarrhoea episode in pure liquid state.
From another discussion group that I joined, I understand that fatigue and dizziness are common side effects. However, although the dental literature reports that dry mouth and altered taste are also side effects (of both beta blockers and calcium channel blockers), no one else has specifically mentioned them in the replies that I've received to my notes.
Attacks could last minutes or hours and any combination of symptoms would happen. And in between attacks, my heart would regularly do many strange things - tachy, brady, irregular rhythm, extremely forceful beats, 'flip-flopping' feelings, etc. I also sometimes experienced a sensation of the heart stopping and restarting - immediately after the restart I would feel a MASSIVE, uncomfortable surge of adrenaline and the heart would beat very fast for a little while.
Bradycardia/Tachycardia 10. Equilibrium problems including lightheadeness 11. Dry and metallic taste in mouth I don't know what to do anymore! I have had an MRI of my brain, ENG to rule out ear probelms and all were negative. I would have hoped for being on meds (today is day 18) that some of this would have eased but I feel worse each and every day!
My problem is with the symptoms all the time of being lightheaded, blurred vision, heavy arms, legs, chest and headaches and palps and/or chest pains. Last oxygen level check was 92. My echocardiogram was pretty good last year and even though my EF has dropped from 73% down to 52% all is still within range. My glucose numbers have been under control (been keeping them between 80-110) and thyroid issues are ok too I believe....
The added salivation helped me with my dry mouth and the increased GI activity meant I could cut back on one of my doses of miralax and metamucil. It is like a miracle drug for me as far as muscle weakness is concerned. I am also on guanficine now for BP and the combination seems to keep me from having BP surges. I still have low tho when I am on my feet too long. All in all the pyridostigmine has been a wonder drug for me.
The next day I ended up in the er my blood pressure was 162/106 my heart rate was in the 120's, my right arm was completely numb/weak, my mouth was numb, and I could barely talk from being so confused and disoriented. The er doctor looked at my blood work and said my thyroid level was abnormal, he said it wasn't horrible that it was boarderline but that I need to be on a low-dose thyroid medicine for hyperthryoidism, and put me on 50mg twice daily of metoprolol generic for lopressor.
My hubby has DCM diagnosed earleir this year at 31 years old. Technically, Mild DCM idopathic. He's normal weight, no other health issues. His symptoms however are progressive and interrupting. He's gained 7 lbs this last week, frequently has bout of gasping for air in his sleep and after exsertion, almost constant chest pains, shortness of breath, pain down the left arm, memory and confusion problems, and yesterday he somehow obtained several bruises down his right arm.
Then I felt a heat wash over me and felt like I was cooking from the inside out. My mouth got very dry and I felt the most intense panic and couldn't writhing on the bed for hours. They followed the compazine with benedryl and I was able to stop moving but internally the panic never went away. It has been 17 days and I cannot sleep more than an hour at a time.
I dont know if this is a side effect of my medication or not but my mouth tends to get dry to the point i have to get up and get a drink.
If you see it go to 40, I would go to a Doctor asap. Some clues for dehydration include dry mouth and lips, tiredness, passing urine much less (3 or 4 times a day) and the urine is usually more concentrated, a much darker yellow colour.
It seems to be keeping in a good range but I dan't blame the Metoprolol although my hands and elbows are less dry and my feet are actually close to normal in terms of warmness now. So negatives about doing off Metoprolol is heart beats more noticeable when under stress, the headaches have gone away not - turns out I was'nt getting enough moisture through my sleep apnea machine causing sinus dryness and headaches and I think under stress my blood pressure does go up but normally it's low.
