Low protein and albumin levels

Common Questions and Answers about Low protein and albumin levels

protein

Avatar m tn I had a test done showing my albumin levels are a little low than normal. Can this be dangerous?? If so in what ways??
Avatar f tn FIP is a possibility but I would be more interested in looking at causes of a low serum protein. Low protein causes a buildup of fluid in the abdomen and is often associated with a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Protein could be lost via the intestine (protein losing enteropathy) or in the urine (protein losing nephropathy).
Avatar f tn 5-5 gm/dL of albumin and 2.3-3.5 gm/dL of globulin. Ideally, albumin levels will fall at 4.5-5/100 ml, alpha globulin levels will remain at .2-.3 g/L and beta globulin levels will fall at .7-1.0 g/L. The proper globulin to albumin ratio is 1:2, though this can range from 1.7-2.2 and still remain healthy. If this ratio changes to an extreme level it can cause a number of health concerns.
Avatar m tn A low A/G ratio may be due to overproduction of globulin or underproduction of albumin.
1069633 tn?1255242989 My albumin has been high, my total protein has been high, my vitamin d -25 is slightly low and my blood phosphate is moderately low. My calcium is actually on the high side of normal. Have they checked your blood phosphate? From what I've read, vitamin d and phosphate can be low and calcium high due to hormone and parathyroid problems as the body is reabsorbing the phosphate to keep the calcium from going too high or something along those lines.
Avatar m tn Albumin and total protein. Levels of albumin — a protein made by the liver — and total protein show how well your liver is making proteins that your body needs to fight infections and perform other functions. Lower than normal levels may indicate liver damage or disease. Bilirubin. Bilirubin results from the breakdown of red blood cells. Normally, bilirubin passes through the liver and is excreted in your stool.
Avatar f tn i now have to bring my first morning pee in to my appt. With low albumin and protein along with this change im thinking kidney problems arising? the release is worded differently, i will sit and compare tonight and see what they slipped in or out.
6749350 tn?1401980405 Hi nan hope u and your hubbys ok Albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood iit is produced in the liver it keeps oncotic pressure stable ie low albumin causes edema ascices fluid leakage low albumin can b a sign of liver decompensating and my doc said if mine went to 1.
Avatar f tn My Igg index and protein levels were normal. The only abnormality was the albumin in my CSF was low. Any idea what that might mean? I greatly appreciate you answering my questions.
Avatar f tn Drinking lots of water, and diarrhea can cause low sodium levels, and if you're not working with an Endocrinologist on the cause....you should be. There are several causes and an Endo can best determine what the cause is. Diuretics can also cause this along with problems with the adrenal glands which may not be detected in bloodwork. Hope this helps and best wishes!
Avatar f tn Also l would like to know a little more about albumin (what it is and average levels). Glucose was 95. Thanks in advance for whatever help you may give me. Greatly appreciated!
Avatar m tn A low platelet count typically under 100,000 and low albumin levels, high bilirubin levels, high INR and creatintine levels only appear after extensive damage has been done to the liver and the liver can no longer function properly. This only occurs when a person has cirrhosis plus portal hypertension. Many of these people are on liver transplant waiting lists and are very ill because their livers are failing and they are suffering the effects of liver failure.
Avatar f tn ultra sound of abdomen and pelvic is also normal. But serum creatinine, Albumin, blood urea nitrogen and total proteins show LOW values. Chloride shows High value. All the other parameters are normal. I am unable to comprehend the report. I am due to meet my doctor with the reports after two weeks. Till then if someone could help me understand.
Avatar n tn I have had this too several times. Plus there's always low protein and albumin etc, but no protein in urine lately as far as I know. I go to see the doc today so I'll mention it.
220090 tn?1379167187 Because disease states affect the relative changes in albumin and globulins in different ways, this may provide a clue to your doctor as to the cause of the change in protein levels. A low A/G ratio may reflect overproduction of globulins, such as seen in multiple myeloma or autoimmune diseases, or underproduction of albumin, such as occurs with cirrhosis, or selective loss of albumin from the circulation, as occurs with kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome).
501944 tn?1224056021 It can also check your albumin levels which indicate how much protein you have in your system. If these levels are being taken, your doctor would say something if it was concerning. However, if they are not being taken, ask to have them taken one time. I almost died last month because my albumin got so low from malabsorption. Now I have to be on IV TPN (nutrition) for 3 months at home. I'm glad those B12 shots helped some!
Avatar n tn Protein in the urine or proteinuria can indicate kidney disease. Low levels of protein in urine are normal especially in younger people after exercise or activity. However, excessive amounts need further evaluation to rule out any problems with the kidneys. Further testing may need to be done to confirm this. Take care and do keep us posted on your consultation with your endocrinologist.
Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosed with Waldmanns disease last year which is a protein losing enteropathy. Her blood protein levels are constantly low because of this - albumin has been has low as 13 but more recently 24 (it goes up and down). Her total protein is 48. We get sent all of her blood results but never get to discuss anything but protein. I wondered whether anyone on here could read anything from her results and suggest a way forward.
Avatar n tn When albumin levels become very low, fluid can leak out from the blood vessels into nearby tissues, causing swelling in the feet and ankles. Very low levels of albumin may be a sign of liver damage. The normal albumin range is from 3.9 grams/ deciliter to 5.0 grams/deciliter. Prothrombin (also called factor II) is a protein that helps to clot blood. Prothrombin is made in the liver. A prothrombin time test measures how much time it takes for a person's blood to clot.
Avatar f tn contentid=total_protein_ag_ratio If you are dehydrated your protein level may appear higher than it is. Dehydration may also lead to higher albumin levels. Making sure you have had enough water before the test will give an accurate result. https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/what-is-a-total-serum-protein-test What does it mean when your ag ratio is high? High A/G ratio: This can be a sign of disease in your liver, kidney, or intestines.
Avatar m tn I got my dr to check everything else last time and to me my dht and dhea are very low as well as my testosterone, but my testosterone was a little higher before I started the injections. thinking about stopping them all together and going to try to get him to pursue one of the other possibilities. heres my results. I threw everything that I had checked in the only thing that gets me is the dhea and dht. and before I started the injections my t levels were around 360.
Avatar m tn Hello, i have ulcerative colitis and the test of total protein was albumin 4.4g/dL and globulin 3.8g/dL could the UC be the source of elevated globulin?
Avatar n tn Thank you for your thorough reply and the time you put into this site. My mother's protein levels are very low as confirmed by blood albumin tests prior to her discharge from hospital. Her renal function was normal as was her liver function. Lasix has had little effect. Her nutritional status was poor going into surgery and after 8 days without food her albumin was very low. She is slowly 'restarting' her bowel function and eating some food daily. We see her Oncologist Mon.
