I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.

So, although you are right, one of the side-effects of Topamax can be weight loss, and it is used off-label as a weight loss medication, if 98lbs is under a healthy weight for your age and height category, then it may not be an appropriate medication for you. Mind you, if the Topamax is working wonders for your migraine/headache pain... it might also be a shame to take you off of it... which is why your doctors are searching for an alternate cause for your weight loss.

Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.

I have just recently been prescribed Topamax 25mg to aid in weight loss. I take 25mg at bedtime for 7 days then 50mg. How long does it take before i should start seeing a difference in my weight. I have noticed that I do not have headaches since taking this medicine.

I started out on 2-25mg topamax a day and was losing weight my dr put me on just 1-50mg now and am gaining weight like crazy,is there a reason for this change that I should be aware or have checked

Does anyone know of anything besides Topamax or Phetermine for weightloss...I hve tried phetermine but have heard of Topomax and am currently checking into it for weightloss...the side effects seem pretty scary tho...

Hi...this is not really all that new, and it is the generic of TOPAMAX...this can take 2 weeks to adjust to....so u may feel extremely tired and off balance with this.... I did lose weight, and not sure how it works, but I gained it all back and I am still on the med....so it is not a weight loss miracle. I have noticed a change in taste as well as smells...so I know that did affect what I eat.... Good luck and again be advised most do need an adjustment period to this med.

I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss? I currently take Maxalt for headaches only as needed so the Topamax was only used as an anti-seizure med. Now, the positive thing I do like about this topamax their is a lot of feedback as far as the weight loss part of it. This is really what I am more interested in taking it for.

Has anyone had any interactions/reactions with the drug Topamax when prescribed for BPII & OCD. My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks.

( So the weight loss is one of the better side effects LOL. The biggest side effect for me was the hands and feet (and sometimes lips) tingling. Not all the time but especially in the beginning. Numbness too. They weren't bothersome enough for me to stop taking it, though. I hope it works for you.

I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.

The worst side effect for me on topa was feeling extremely irritable. I didn't want to be a mean mom, so I had to go off it. I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches. I have almost come to the point where I just have to accept them as part of my life. I really would like this med to work. Info/suggestions/ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated..

i was on topamax and it was horrible for me. i lost 2 much weight. your doc should have checked your thyroid befor putting u on that drug because it could have been the cause of your headaced. did u check your thyroid before getting on the drug? thyroid gland can cause problems like headache and hair loss and other symptoms.
