Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for weight loss dose

topamax

1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar n tn I have just recently been prescribed Topamax 25mg to aid in weight loss. I take 25mg at bedtime for 7 days then 50mg. How long does it take before i should start seeing a difference in my weight. I have noticed that I do not have headaches since taking this medicine.
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
633143 tn?1262133535 I also had this kind of crazy weight loss on Topamax. For me, it turned out to be the combination of the dosage of Topamax and other medications that made the weight loss so severe. I noticed that once I stopped taking Wellbutrin and as my headaches improved I lowered my dose of Topamax, the weight loss eased off and it took about 6 months to get back to my usual weight. Now I am back watching what I eat, instead of eating everything in site and losing weight!
Avatar f tn I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.
Avatar f tn I was put on Topamax in 2006 For Migraines/Stress Headaches. I lost my Mother,Father,Husband all within a 16 month period. But migraines also run in the family. I was also type 2 Diabetic sometime my sugar was so high it wouldn't register on my meter. But taking the Topamax starting at 200mg at night then going to 400mg . Put my migraines under control . For a short time.
Avatar f tn I am currently taking sertraline for mood swings and have been taking it for about 5 years. I also have recently been put on topamax for migraines. I have read about all this wonderful weight loss. If anything I have gained. Could these 2 medicines together be holding me back from losing> I would like to go off of the sertraline.
1549189 tn?1293935668 Does anyone know of anything besides Topamax or Phetermine for weightloss...I hve tried phetermine but have heard of Topomax and am currently checking into it for weightloss...the side effects seem pretty scary tho...
Avatar f tn I have been on Geodon since January 2, 2005 and have had a HORRIFIC experience! I gained 40 pounds in six months, need to wear glasses because of my blurry vision, foggy thoughts, bad short-term memory, extreme dry mouth, body spasms, facial tics, grinding teeth, palpitations, slurred speech, and extreme nausea. I have been to many doctors over the years and they all say that these side effects had nothing to do with my medication.
Avatar n tn I take it for nerve pain and complex migraines. I did experience weight loss but not loss so far, but I do take daily vitamin and extra supplements plus making sure I drink Ensure and a V-8 everyday to keep myself health. I didn’t need to lose any weight. I also cut all alcohol out with the exception of the occasional glass of wine with we are out to dinner with friends…. (Mostly so I don’t look like a party pooper) and anything carbonated taste awful.
225237 tn?1333138999 I am looking for some help! I was given Topamax 25 mg 1xday @ bedtime for weight loss.....could anyone let me kno about side effects or personal experiences?!?! I appreciate any help!
Avatar f tn You will find varying opinions on Topamax. Some people think it's absolute poision. There are side effects which can include the numbness/tingling, weight loss (not such a bad one LOL), and some say they experience a "foggy" brain. For me, the side effects weren't bothersome enough to quit. The Topa did seem to help in the beginning (I was taking it for chronic migraine) but after about 2 years, I felt like it wasn't quite doing the job so I recently got off.
Avatar n tn topamax shouldnt cause you to gain weight at all i was on it for a while and lost like 40 lbs never gained any of it back either you should talk to your dr about it
Avatar n tn Again, my point was that not very many doctors will prescribe Topamax, "solely" for weight loss; it's usually prescribed for something else and weight loss is a "beneficial" side effect, which was the intent when it was prescribed for me... I don't have headaches... I prescribed Topamax for peripheral neuropathy in my feet. My neurologist has put me on gabapentin, but one of the main side effects of that is weight gain and I gained like there was no tomorrow.
614508 tn?1265281722 Has anyone had any interactions/reactions with the drug Topamax when prescribed for BPII & OCD. My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks.
Avatar n tn Hi...this is not really all that new, and it is the generic of TOPAMAX...this can take 2 weeks to adjust to....so u may feel extremely tired and off balance with this.... I did lose weight, and not sure how it works, but I gained it all back and I am still on the med....so it is not a weight loss miracle. I have noticed a change in taste as well as smells...so I know that did affect what I eat.... Good luck and again be advised most do need an adjustment period to this med.
Avatar f tn I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss? I currently take Maxalt for headaches only as needed so the Topamax was only used as an anti-seizure med. Please let me know so that I can discuss this with my neurologist about adding Topamax back into my daily routine. Thank you, any help you could give would be wonderful.
1041303 tn?1421387341 i was on that for weight loss..i wont take it no more..i never got symptoms as you are..just felt difft on it...
Avatar n tn Hey there I didn't loose any weight until I reached the 200mg dose (100 am 100 pm) of topamax in fact I gained on the lower doses... (could have been water) once I reached the higher doses my appetite went away and so did my bulimia! I just wasn't hungry all my sugar and carbon cravings went away so I could make good choices, and I was fuller quicker.
Avatar m tn I was on Topamax for a while and I did lose weight. I have not lost weight on anything else, and since they took me off I have gained like 30 lbs over just a few years. I had to go off of Topamax and put on another med because I was high as a kite on it. Almost hallucinating - looking at the ground and seeing what looked like a sinking quicksand hole, etc. And the side effects did not go away over a couple months of trying so I had to go on something else.
Avatar n tn Now, the positive thing I do like about this topamax their is a lot of feedback as far as the weight loss part of it. This is really what I am more interested in taking it for.
284078 tn?1282616698 This time about a woman on Topamax for 7 days who seemed to have lost almost all her vision 12 hours after increasing her dose per her doctor's instructions. Some quick thinking sparked me to ask if she could see up close and lo and behold while she was blind as a bat in the distance, she could see the tiniest print about 6 inches in front of her nose. She had developed an acute myopic shift from a choroidal effusion which pushed the lens/iris diaphram forward.
