Common Questions and Answers about Fetal development of fraternal twins

fetal-development

Avatar n tn I am currently 8 weeks 4 days pregnant with fraternal twins. So far i have not had any symptoms. No nausea, no mood swings, etc. I saw their heart beats last week and i also heard that once they have heart beats your chances if muscarriage drop down to about 5%. I am fearful because of something stupid a friend told me. She said she was happy for me and that "i was pregnant with twins too but i miscarried at around 8 weeks soooo" and thats it. I have been fearful ever since.
Avatar f tn Well the chances overall depend on if they were identical or fraternal. Identical twins are a chance happening that occurs every 3 in 1,000 births. Fraternal twins are dependent on the female genetics. If I'm reading your post correctly, two sacs were found but only one fetal pole with heartbeat?
Avatar f tn Im having twins found out at five weeks but at that time only one had a fetal pole and hb. Now im 13weeks and both are good they're fraternal.
Avatar f tn My hubbs is an identical twin and his bro just had a single birth. I think there may be one set of twins on my side of the family but they are much much older like my parents age. So we were not expecting twins at all. Then boom two dots on the ultrasound screen!
Avatar f tn 5 times as likely to have twins as someone from the general population. A mother of fraternal twins is 3-4 times more likely to have another set of fraternal twins. A woman who is an identical twin is no more likely to have twins compared to someone else. The father's bloodline does not affect the chances of having twins.
1271018 tn?1296536826 Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this too. My fraternal twins (boy/girl) have had very different fetal movements this past week. My girl feels like she's cage fighting while my boy is hardly moving at all. I was so concerned about his lack of movement that I phoned my DR and was told to drink OJ and lay on my left side, that got him going somewhat. I was just wondering if any of you pg with twins have had this same issue?
216354 tn?1262871346 Yep it's common, and generally not dangerous, especially (I would think) if they are fraternal twins. The only time it can be a bigger concern is if you're having identical twins and then there is a greater chance for TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome - I think is the name of it) That's when one twin can take up more nutrients than the other... It's very rare though. My fraternal twins have been measuring a few days apart the whole time, as well...
Avatar f tn   Do we have a dramatically increased chance of having twins? And since fraternal twins comes from two eggs being released at once, even if we don't end up with twins does that mean it might be easier for us to get pregnant since more than one egg may be releases at a time? Thanks!!!
Avatar f tn My sister had fraternal twins at 23, and twins run on my mother's side of the family, though she, her mother, and none of my siblings are twins. I was wondering if my chances of having twins is greater since my sister had twins.
Avatar f tn ve heard that typically women carrying twins show about 8 weeks further along then they are. You do have to eat more and drink a lot of water. I've also been very very tired but I'm finally getting my appetite back. You'll have a lot more Dr appointments now and more ultrasounds. Did they tell you if you're having identical or fraternal? I'm free to discuss if you ever want to send emails.
Avatar n tn Certain factors may increase the risk of having twins, such as fertility treatments and a maternal history of twins. A paternal history is not likely to contribute. Hope this information is helpful.
Avatar n tn Your dad's input does not make any difference, not only is identical just luck of the draw, but nothing about twinning comes down the dad's side. But you being a fraternal twin (which comes from your mom's side) does. You have a greater likelihood of having twins (fraternal) than a woman who does not have fraternal twins in her mother's side of the family. It comes from having the ability to pop out two eggs in one cycle. Your mom might have passed that down to you.
Avatar m tn Not very common. Fraternal twins are usually genetic (only one the mothers side) and are caused by hyper ovulation (more than one egg drops when you ovulate) and identical twins are from a fluke where the egg splits in half.

Avatar f tn Fraternal twins only matter on the females side. Your husband being ones doesn't really increase your odds, as it's genetics that cause the female to release 2+ eggs. Identical twins are completely random and nothing influences it.
Avatar f tn Congrats to u ladies carrying twins its a lot of work.. I delivered fraternal twins boy.and girl two years ago marh 5th thy were born at 25 weeks super healthy.now!!
Avatar n tn I was scared to death of having twins my first time to and my grandmother is a fraternal twin! But they checked everywhere and I'm only carrying one.
Avatar f tn I am a fraternal twin, and my husband is a fraternal twin. Do I have a higher chance of having twins?
Avatar n tn In addition, that also runs in cultures - certain african cultures have higher rate of fraternal twins and some asian cultures have very low rate of fraternal twins. Identical twins happen spontaneously and there is a equal % chance of that happening (1:300) throughout the world.
1348132 tn?1276619723 If twins share a placenta then they are identical and thus the same sex. If there are two placentas you could have one of three combinations: 2 boys, 2 girls or one of each gender.
Avatar n tn Although it does run in families, you do not have to have twins in your family at all and you could still have twins...especially fraternal twins.
183933 tn?1290216962 How can you tell if they are fraternal or identical. I'm assuming that they are fraternal becaue we did IVF and transferred to embryos, but you never know. Does anyone know how you can tell? Thanks.
Avatar f tn Pregnant w fraternal twins. One twin is 9wks 4days old with heartbeat, yolk sac, and gestational sac; while the other has no cardiac activity and yolk sac, but has a gestational sac at 7wks 4days old? Could the twin w/out heartbeat be developing slow or is it in fact no viable?
1652107 tn?1301894340 5 times as likely to have twins as someone from the general population. A mother of fraternal twins is 3-4 times more likely to have another set of fraternal twins. A woman who is an identical twin is no more likely to have twins compared to someone else. Why do fraternal twins run in the family but not identical twins? Identical twins come from the same fertilized egg. The frequency of identical twins is the same everywhere, about four in every 1000 births.
