Fear of blood pressure cuff

Common Questions and Answers about Fear of blood pressure cuff

fear

Avatar f tn I have this fear of having my blood pressure taken by health professions. When I take it myself at home it's normal. I want to know how I can overcome my fears.
4948466 tn?1392168046 I take my blood pressure using a wrist cuff "Life Source" device and my blood pressure varies considerably during the day. I try to sit down and rest a couple of minutes before taking the readings but always big swings. Occasionally 165/90 and a couple of hours later 113/71. I take 3 readings each time. I do the same at the drug store and get similar varied results. 63 years old with a history of past high cholesterol, normal now. Why the big swings?

Avatar f tn AHA Recommendation: The American Heart Association recommends an automatic, cuff-style, bicep (upper-arm) monitor. Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended because they yield less reliable readings.
Avatar m tn 1 mmHg (millimeter of mercury) is equivalent to approx. 0,75 cm of water (as the density of mercury is approx. 13 times as high as water). Blood has about the same density as water, so in other words, for each cm you keep your arm (wrist) below heart level, your blood pressure monitoring will increase with 0,75 mmHg systolic AND diastolic.
446896 tn?1237802742 has anyone successfully conquered their fear of having their blood pressure taken? How did you do it? I really want to get over this. I mean, I feel like i try to do everything right...I eat fairly well, I'm definitely not overweight, dont smoke or drink, somewhat active...the only thing I have trouble with is my anxiety. Ugh...this is frustrating!
Avatar f tn I went to a new shoulder doctor for a torn rotator cuff. The other docotr never took my blood pressure. The minute I saw that cuff, woshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, my blood pressure went to 200/104. The took it before I left it started to come down a little, but still up. I just think about getting it taken and it goes up. I try to think back what would cause this.
Avatar m tn s funny that both you and flycaster have mentioned electronic cuffs are more accurate than the non-electronic versions because it seems that every time I do a search on electronic blood pressure cuffs and their accuracy, I receive similar results. For the electronic blood pressure cuff on the bicep, those tend to give a higher systolic rating sometimes while the wrist cuffs tend to be the least accurate out of all of the cuffs.
537497 tn?1292553056 Yes, I had this problem too. I call it the white coat syndrome. I have had it for years. What helped me was too think pleasant thoughts while my blood pressure is taken. I used this method for years until last fall when my Dr. said I needed to take blood pressure medicine due to my consistent high/normal blood pressure and my anxiety had started to get worse but now through therapy I am doing much better but I have continued on the meds as recommended by my Dr. So you are not alone!! Take Care.
Avatar m tn I am a student at Brown University in Providence, RI, USA doing a project on constant blood pressure monitoring. Instead of using a blood pressure cuff, you'd wear a patch or a bracelet-like device that would monitor your blood pressure 24/7 and you'd be able to track your measurements on your smartphone or computer. Do you think such a device would help you monitor your condition better? What are some current problems people have with their blood pressure cuffs?
976897 tn?1379167602 m on no beta blockers or blood pressure meds at the moment. They decided to look at my blood pressure because of the recent loss of my wife. I saw my Cardiologist last week and my BP then was 155/101 and he said he wasn't concerned and it was likely the recent stress causing it. He said he would leave it a few months. I still haven't heard anything from my Doctor about the results. I used to take Ramipril ace inhibitors back from 2007-2009.

Avatar f tn Dear Doctor, I check my blood pressure whenever I sense the feeling of fear in my body and have white coat at the doctors and at home. Medication did not give me any relief. I had CBT from 2 therapists but I got more obsessed about my blood pressure as the focus of the theraphy was how reduce checking. The more I focused on my problem , the worse it got. So I began checking less on my own but sometimes I gave in due to the compulsion being too strong.
Avatar n tn Yesterday i tested my blood pressure and it was 154/98... What could be the cause of the problem, and is it normal? What should i do?
Avatar n tn I would check again and see what your blood pressure is. Sometimes if you take your blood pressure right after you lift heavy weights, for example, it can be higher than usual. If it stays high after a couple of times checking it, you should see a doctor. Good luck.
Avatar f tn It appears you take your blood pressure at home, if so make sure that your blood pressure cuff gives a similar reading to the cuff in your doctor's office. Electronic blood pressure cuffs need to be checked periodically, to ensure that they are giving an accurate reading. A malfunction BP unit can cause variations. What is your heart rate when you BP is high, and what is the heart rate when BP is low?
Avatar m tn I am concerned about the accuracy of typical blood pressure monitors that run $50-$100 at any drug store. I have one and I'm sure I"m taking my pressure correctly but sometimes it gives me weird readings, for example 77/41... and 1 minute later 118/74 (which is in line with my normal)... Then I'll get 111/51, etc. I would actually be willing to spend several hundred dollars if I could be assured of a professional accuracy but I'm not sure where to look.
212161 tn?1599427282 the thing i would pay attention to is if the cuff is showing some sort of abnormal reading and you are having some sort of symtoms fine.....then time to sit up and take notice...however if you are getting a poor reading and feel fine...well.....i think your answer may be there.....
