fear

Avatar f tn I have this fear of having my blood pressure taken by health professions. When I take it myself at home it's normal. I want to know how I can overcome my fears.

1521781 tn?1310513772 My question is, one day at the OB/GYN I felt anxious for no reason at all, kind of like a panic attack randomly, and my blood pressure was 144/110....with this my hands were clammy and I felt anxious, thats about it. That prompted me to go to my internst who took my blood pressure and found it a little on the high side, i can't remember the amount but it was about 130s/90s.
Avatar n tn blood work, EKGs, 48 hr. monitor, Echo, Thallium stress test, and a cath. Cardiologist said all was normal and that I had anxiety. I saw the same dr. this past week for blood pressure concerns. When I'm at the dr's office it can be 120/92 but at home it's usually 88-95/55-65. He did an EKG and said that the blood pressure was not dangerous.
446896 tn?1237802742 has anyone successfully conquered their fear of having their blood pressure taken? How did you do it? I really want to get over this. I mean, I feel like i try to do everything right...I eat fairly well, I'm definitely not overweight, dont smoke or drink, somewhat active...the only thing I have trouble with is my anxiety. Ugh...this is frustrating!
Avatar f tn Sneezing in itself probably would raise your blood pressure- I know talking and eating can. And on top of that, a rush of adrenaline with your fear could easily raise your blood pressure. Since the cuff doesn't normally squeeze that tight, I wouldn't put too much stock in the result you got there. What kind of cuff do you have? I know Omron is a respected brand for home monitors.
Avatar m tn ve had blood pressure of 165/105 at the doctors office, when trying my best to stay calm. It seems like the fear of high blood pressure is driving the blood pressure up, regardless how funny it seems, just as fear of heart rhythm can be causing palpitations, fear of coronary artery disease can cause chest pain (and my current fear, fear of depression, can make me feel depressed). The body just works that way. At 164/84, yes, your pulse is harder (wide pulse pressure).
Avatar m tn My husband and I have used a home monitor for years with much accuracy. In fact years ago on a whim I took my blood pressure while at the drugstore on one of the machines and it was high. I called my doctor and he also said that these aren't accurate, but wanted to see me. It was accurate, and that's the day I started on BP medications. My husband has a lot of health issues and has to check his BP regularlyat home, and it's always within a few points of what the doctor gets.
Avatar m tn Blood pressure is affected by gravity. If you are standing and measuring your blood pressure at ankle level, you are going to see some amazing numbers (just try), probably 220/180 or so. The explaination is fairly simple: 1 mmHg (millimeter of mercury) is equivalent to approx. 0,75 cm of water (as the density of mercury is approx. 13 times as high as water).
Avatar n tn Having a blood pressure monitor at home is often very helpful in the management of hypertension. There are a wide range of models available that can fit most budgets. More important than any bells and whistles, is to make sure that your home blood pressure monitor is reliable and accurate. The best way to check this is to have it calibrated or compared to your physicians measurement by taking it with you to your next doctor's appointment.
Avatar m tn I am a student at Brown University in Providence, RI, USA doing a project on constant blood pressure monitoring. Instead of using a blood pressure cuff, you'd wear a patch or a bracelet-like device that would monitor your blood pressure 24/7 and you'd be able to track your measurements on your smartphone or computer. Do you think such a device would help you monitor your condition better? What are some current problems people have with their blood pressure cuffs?
Avatar m tn when we go to the doctors, and one of the most common manifestaions of this will be an elevated blood pressure. Sometimes, depending on the degree of our fear, it will get very high. As was also pointed out to you, doctors are well aware of this and take it into consideration and will almost always retake your pressure at the end of the exam, and while your pressure will almost always be lower during this second check, it will almost always still be higher than normal.
Avatar m tn I HAVE NORMAL READINGS OF BLOOD PRESSURE AT HOME WHEN IN A RELAXED FRAME OF MIND BUT i GOT A HIGH READING AT THE DOC. OFFICE A YEAR AGO AND THE NURSE SCARED ME,saying are you feeling okay your reading is high, I totally panicked.
212161 tn?1599427282 Apparently many patients with high blood pressure at home due to lots of stress seem to calm down a lot in the waiting room for a Doctor, or when admitted into hospital. This reflects a normal blood pressure while at home their blood pressure is much higher. The opposite also takes effect where some people feel anxiety visiting a Doctor or being in hospital. The minute they leave and go home, their blood pressure relaxes and yet they are now on meds to lower it even further.
Avatar n tn I would probably call your doctor on this one. This is a high blood pressure, but it doesn't mean you are having a heart attack. Blood pressures are different depending on what you are doing. Some of the home BP monitors aren't exactly accurate either.
Avatar f tn Keep monitor it for awhile, and get you one of those digital home blood pressure monitors. They store records of your pressure and give you a more accurate reading because you are relaxed in your own home. If it is high when you are at home, then you might get a little more concerned. You can buy one from ebay for 29.99 new with free shipping.
Avatar f tn My husband was required to monitor his for a while so we have a wrist cuff monitor. Well, I have always had low blood pressure, however at my prenatal visits so far my BP has always been fine, within range, but at the higher end of the acceptable range. Well, last night I took my BP and it was 81 / 60 and then 77 / 58. This morning when I took it is was 66 / 52. I brought my the monitor with me to work and just took it again and now it is 99 / 66.
Avatar f tn If you can, buy a home blood pressure monitor and keep track of it at home. It could have been a spike due to stress. If it stays a little higher, they may give you a med to help keep it down until baby comes.
Avatar f tn But told me to tell them if I get top number of 140+ or bottom number of 90+. I am high risk for high blood pressure but so far my highest was 118/70 something. Good luck!
Avatar n tn This is the first time I have been on blood pressure medicine, and the drug has worked very well in terms of my blood pressure itself. I take my pressure at home with an electric blood pressure monitor and I now average about 130 over 72 to 75. My question is, are there side effects associated with lowering blood pressure that much that fast? The reason I ask is that I feel as though I do not have good circulation in my feet.
Avatar f tn So I went to the doctor the other day for my blood pressure ( I was on blood pressure meds before I got pregnant and doctor took me off because it was to dangerous) well my blood pressure was going crazy so I went to the doctor and I was seeing a midwife and now because it's so serious they're making me see an actual surgeon. As my regular doctor. Which worries me...
