Common Questions and Answers about Fainting and children

fainting

Avatar n tn I have copied this out for you, it happens quite frequently While there are uncommon serious causes of passing out in children, the majority of fainting episodes are brought about by reasons that are neither serious nor life-threatening. The most common reason for fainting in children is called vasovagal syncope [VAY-so-VAY-gull SEENK-oh-pee). Vasovagal syncope is an abnormal reaction of the nerves to otherwise normal circumstances. These nerves dictate the heart rate and blood pressure.
Avatar f tn m asking the right department as I went up to see a neurologist and he tested my reflexes and asked if I lost control of my bowels and bladder and then looked into my eyes and told me it wasn't Epilepsy and I would have to put up with the Fainting/Blacking Out. I would really like some suggestions that I could ask my own GP what she thinks as I'm at the end of my tether with fainting/Blacking Out.
Avatar f tn I am not the doctor, but I do have five children and have also dealt with other young children in my family who have breath holding episodes. What you are describing is absolutely consistent with breath holding episodes. They can be horribly frightening and terrifying to watch, especially when the seizing starts and they "come to". It looks like they could truly stop breathing and never start again. This is something that they outgrow with age, usually around 4-5 (my experience).
Avatar m tn Are you nervous all the time for fear of fainting? Have you talked with a gatro doctor about this and are you on any type of medication that may be causing this problem? let me know whats going on.
Avatar n tn Each time he was sitting down and the last two incidences, May 17th and May 24th, he had weakness in his right arm and hand. These fainting spells last a split second...he blanks out, collapses and comes through in a split second. Neurologists don't believe the seizures and fainting are related. The cardiologists that have seen him don't think he has a heart issue. We really need help to figure this out!! Thank you!
Avatar n tn There are metabolic syndromes in children presenting with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. If there are other manifestations, sometimes undiagnosed cause of abdominal pain is something called porphyria, for which specific testing exists. Also, if there is suspiscion based on multiple other symptoms, mitochondrial disorders can present with neurologic abnormalities along with GI symptoms. Conditions such as Cyclic vomiting can also present with episodes of vomiting with no underlying cause.

Avatar f tn It is really frustrating. She has 4 children and her 13 year old daughter called the ambulance this last time. The kids are getting used to it and that is not fair to them either.
967168 tn?1477584489 Can you tell me what the "gold" standard of diagnosing HOCM or Obstructed Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is? I've been reading about it and it seems to be a very difficult disease to diagnose. Can it cause Polymorphic VT episodes? I had several tests that showed I had many problems which have gone unexplained and local doctors have not been able to find the answers.
Avatar n tn People who do have symptoms often exhibit fainting (syncope) and abnormal rate and/or rhythm of the heartbeat (arrhythmia). People with this syndrome may show prolongation of the Q-T interval during physical exercise, intense emotion (such as fright, anger or pain) or when startled by a noise. Some arrhythmias are potentially fatal, causing sudden death. In one type of inherited LQTS, the person may also become deaf. Sorry for the report, but it does require immediate medical attention..
Avatar m tn My 12 year old brother has experienced 3 episodes of syncope, 2 of them happened 3 years ago and the last happened today. He was doing fine all through this time interval. the symptoms he had in these 3 episodes in addition to fainting are dizziness, nausea and 'chest pain' (according to him... i cudn't make sure if he had a real pain or just tightness) and this concerns me the most. What cud be the cause? HOCM? Long QT syndrome? cud it be just vasovagal attack?
Avatar f tn I have been so ill since got pregnant cant even leave house with out fainting and feel like failing as mother as not their for child as normally am and she just been stuck at home im so scared about feeling like this for 9 months and then when baby here i feel like cant even look after 1 let alone 2 if anyone can offer any advice as really not copein well?
Avatar f tn Hi there. I got your note and wanted to come offer some "advice" and perhaps ask some questions. I would assume you may not have the answers to some of the questions, but perhaps you might want to ask your doctor some of them. First, I'm curious what the symptoms of your daughter's vasovagal syncope are. I realize that she faints, but has she been tested on a tilt table? What does her heart do? Does it race or does it slow down?
Avatar m tn t a circumferential lip around the opening, surgical closure would be indicated. The fainting episodes are concerning and should be worked up further paying special attention to her conduction system in the heart. 2. It's safe at 65 or older. 3. The body does not reject the device. The implant procudure is relatively simple and the risk of dislodgement in extremely low. Long term data is very good.
Avatar f tn I would definitely talk to my doctor fainting doesnt sound normal and make sure you're keeping your fluid intake up.
Avatar f tn First of all every hospital in the United States will reciece and treat you without charge in and emergency, and loss of consciousness is an emergency. It is absolute nonsense that you would not be evaluated upon presentation in ANY ER with or without money. You have an obligation tom your children that you cannot fullfill in the grave. The liklihood is that you may have simple anemia and dehydration, but that may not be the case.
Avatar n tn My biggest concern is the dizziness and fainting and incredible fatigue. The fatigue has gotten worse over the years but my sleep apnea is managed well with CPAP and nothing else ever seemed wrong physically so I have just dealt with it by making sure I get plenty of rest and strictly pacing my activity level. My sense is something is not right but none of the tests seem all that unusual. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what might be up with this?
Avatar f tn He said she is ok and can participate in ANY activity and her fainting is from just being a teenager. I am complety frustrated and scared for my daughters life. This cardioligist was an assistant to one of the best pediactric cardiologist in Colorado. Should I get a second opinion? Is there someone out there that can guide me where to go? Should I take her out of State? We have taken to the Cleavland clinic before. Should we take her back? Help.
Avatar f tn t take hot showers or baths bc that just increases the blood flow!! I was getting dizzy and practically fainting in the shower.. They said to reduce heat, keep the door open, and try not to take showers alone!! Good luck mama!! It ***** but it will get better!!
Avatar f tn I have had this anxiety since I was a teenager. It first happened when we were at church, but it now happens regularly when I am confronted with certain situations. In short, I faint. I don't know why, but usually it is when I am in an uncomfotable situation (i.e. Weddings, Formal events with a lot of people, etc.)... The weird thing is, it has morphed from 'fainting in church' to 'fainting from worrying about fainting!'... Which is why it happens at large formal events.
Avatar n tn I am 18 and very fit and well except that I have a really bad blood and needle phobia. I pass out cold at the sight of blood needles and at the dentist. I have been fainting since I was a young boy but recently just the thought of blood or going to the dentist is enough to make me pass out. My parents were told that I am vasovagel and that as I get older the fainting should stop.
Avatar n tn I had my ears checked and they said its normal. I went to my cardiologist and they did a stress test, EKG and those were normal. I just did a holter monitor for 24 hours and have yet to get the results. I feel more dizzy when i stand and walk. Its worse after a meal and at night. Its worse when i close my eyes. I feel as though Im standing in a small boat in the middle of the ocean and the waves are rocking me and am trying to catch myself.
Avatar f tn In patients with fibromyalgia there can be a dysfunctional and hypersensitive autonomic nervous system which can cause blood pressure fluctuations, drop in blood pressure and fainting. If you are suffering from hypotension drink plenty of water and fluids. Consume more salt in your diet. You may need tests like an electrocardiogram, cardiac stress testing .A detailed clinical examination and work up can be helpful in managing your condition. See a physician and get your doubts clarified.
Avatar n tn If you got out of bed in the middle of the night and went to the bathroom still sort of sleepy your fainting spell could easily have been vasovagal syncope. Its pretty common and occurs when your BP drops inappropriately (can be induced by many many things).
Avatar f tn I am 53 and in menopause and I have actually fainted now while driving. My heart was racing and I had a hot flash and then I lost consciousness for 3 or 4 seconds. Went off the road, through a fence and into a field. Very luckily, no one was hurt. This happened a year ago. Had tons of tests done on my heart, blood work, etc. Nothing found. Now, a year later, I'm starting to get the dizzy spells again (not vertigo though, I've had that before).
