Avatar n tn This type of treatment is one of the appropriate hormone (anti-estrogen) treatments of estrogen receptive breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
408448 tn?1286883821 I asked my oncologist if my ovca is estrogen driven or receptive. I asked because others on the forum have access to different treatments if the cancer is estrogen driven. My onc told me that that does not apply at all to ovca, only breast. From what I read she is wrong. I also told her that my path report makes me wonder if my cancer began in the appendix and was just diagnosed ovca. She also said that that does not matter.
Avatar n tn Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, meaning that it targets estrogen in the breast independent of ovarian production of estrogen. However, if you have had your ovaries removed, then you would be postmenopausal and could possibly take an aromatase inhibitor instead of tamoxifen. Either way, if your breast cancer is hormone receptor positive, then hormone therapy would likely be recommended as the body does produce estrogen outside of the ovaries.
349465 tn?1289081764 I asked my ONC's nurse about testing me to see if my cancer is estrogen receptive. She said, "testing for that is not in the standards of practice for ovarian cancer. I didn't know what to say. I am asking here because many of you have been tested AND are being treated accordingly. Are there any good articles about this practice? I need suggestions on how to handle this with a successful outcome.
Avatar f tn Hi, Yes, I think that your mom would benefit by taking Arimidex. If the tumor was estrogen receptive (even if weak)and the cancer was locally advanced,I think that it's best to follow the recommendation given by her Doctor. Arimidex is an aromatase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme aromatase (found in the body’s muscle, skin, breast and fat) which is used to convert androgens (hormones produced by the adrenal glands) into estrogen.
Avatar m tn t try OTC medications as they can mimic soy in the body, which cancer cells can view as estrogen. It sounds like you have your cancer under control. So, talk to your doctor and see if you can come up with some alternatives that would help you with the side effects. Best wishes to you.
771665 tn?1235155092 My ovarian oncologist wanted to give me the estrogen as he said my reduced brain function was the worst he had seen. However my breast cancer oncologist wanted to make sure it didn't impact on my previous ER+ breast cancer so she suggested also giving me the Tamoxifen as well. Both of these oncologists work together. I don't now if my ovarian is also ER+ but if it is, this was rather is stupid thing to do, giving me estrogen.
Avatar f tn Femara, Aromatase, Aromasin, and Tamaxifen. Some of these inhibitors are also for Breast Cancer. Sorry if my spelling is wrong. There is another inhibitor called Avistan (not for hormones). Hope this helps...
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy eventhough my tumors were considered to be small--level1. My mother had breast cancer twice, first time did a lumpectomy and tons of radiation and was pronounced cancer free after five years. The next year the cancer was back and she had a mastectomy. My question is since my tumors were small even if they were estrogen fed shouldn't the mastectomy have been enough.
Avatar n tn I got a prescription for it and have been on it for almost a year. It cuts the estrogen production in the body, so that if your cancer is estrogen receptive, it's less likely that it will recur. I'm hoping for the best, because the side effects are kinda tough. So, yep, you bettcha I'm on it!
Avatar f tn Hi Maria, IF your OVCA was estrogen-receptive, then you're in luck. Yes, there's currently a clinical trial of a drug called Aromasin. I believe that it's in the final trial stages, meaning that it's probably working at least for a few women. It cuts the amount of estrogen in our system by 95%. It has nasty side effects, mostly pain in the hands and feet, and hot flashes, but heck, at least we'd be alive to complain about that!
1561229 tn?1296181036 Did you have to wait for to have MRI an what is the next step if anything. You say estrogen receptive, do you mean estrogen is what triggered your type of cancer. The lump an pain is inside of my nipple area. Where was yours? You had 20 cancer sessions an is this what got rid of the rest of the cells. Does this mean you had a mascetomy on one side. Does Arimidex stop estrogen from effecting the breast tissue? I am in Arizona and i dont know anyone out here yet? Will have to ask around.
Avatar n tn My sister also had estrogen receptive cancer in 1999 she was on Tamoxifen for 5 years with all the side effects. I am strongly leaning toward NO radiation or Tamoxifen. I would rather have mammograms more often then go through the side effects. Without ovaries, isn’t my estrogen level lower already? I have an appointment with my Radiologist and Oncologist coming up soon but I would love to hear what others have to say.
Avatar n tn My previous breast cancer was not Estrogen or Progesterone receptive. I was told it would be better had it been, because Tamoxifin would have been used. But I did fine for a decade.
Avatar f tn Just to add to what Lauren said regarding tamoxifen vs. other AI's, they do work differently in the body. Tamoxifen works by blocking the body's use of estrogen, whereas AI's reduce the amount of estrogen present in the body. In studies of breast cancer patients, AI's have proven to work better than tamoxifen in preventing recurrence, and there are far fewer serious side effects with AI's than with tamoxifen, too. Tamoxifen can cause blood clots, and stroke..
587083 tn?1327120262 Also what about the underarm deodorant that contains aluminum, could this cause cancer? My mother is 93 and never had breast cancer but my sister had it last year, was operated went for 6 weeks on radiotherapy and now she is doing just fine. Please give an answer to my question.Thank you.
Avatar n tn My pathology report showed that my ovarian cancer was estrogen receptive/reactive. So why is HRT okay? My local gyno-oncologist and my gyno-oncologist at the Fred Hutchinson Center in Seattle both indicated it was okay. I like being on estrogen, but I am concerned because it seems risky. What is your opinion?
Avatar f tn I have had gemzar for 7 months, and if you click on health pages on the top right of page, who is on chemo, some ladies have what they are on. Do you know if your cancer is estrogen receptive? ( Feeds on estrogen?) If it is, some docs add tamoxifen, arimidex, or femars. What does the dr. say? Best wishes.
Avatar n tn ive been on tamoxifen almost 4 years and was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer estrogen receptive. i had a total mastectomy even though no lymph nodes were affected or the vascular lymph system. it was a grade 2 and the tumour was 1 cm. now, im having problems with simple dysplasia and i have three options do nothing, go off the tamoxifen or hysterectomy. would it be advisable to go off the tamoxifen for 3 months to see if the spotting which i only had twice stops.
Avatar f tn I had Stage 2, Lobular Carcinoma, and non-estrogen receptive, noninvasive, right breast in 2000. Diagnosed by Lumpectomy with clear margins no lymph nodes involved. This was followed by 3 months of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation. The chemo was bad I lost my hair and I was tired and nauseous all the time. With the radiation, I had extreme sunburn like burn on my skin with blisters and sores, and again was very tired. I had to continue working through this to keep my insurance.
429647 tn?1249753429 I also was tested and my cancer was estrogen receptive. Be sure they did that test. Take care.
Avatar f tn The purpose for Oncotype test is a decision making process for women with early stage breast cancer,ER/PR positive,Her2 negative and whose lymph nodes are negative. The test result is reported as a "Recurrence Score" that ranges from 0 to 100.The higher the RS the higher the risk of recurrence. So I presume that the lowest RS you'll have with this test, the less likely you will need chemo.Best wishes and God Bless...
Avatar f tn Is there a right or wrong answer to using estrogen blockers for ADH? I realize that ADH isn't cancer just a disorder that puts me at a higher risk to develop breast cancer. Has the research shown that it is better one way than the other? Estrogen blockers vs. monthly breast self-exams, MRI's of the breast and noting any type of changes in the breast? I'm only 54 years old and not really sure what to do from here?
Avatar n tn Kind of concerned as breast cancer runs in my family and not sure about using this cream. Has anyone tried anything more natural?
Avatar f tn I kept taking estrogen, (but not the progesterone) and 13 years later had breast cancer. I hold no one to blame because of the estrogen. Most reports say that estrogen alone does not cause breast cancer, but if one does get the cancer, the estrogen feeds it and makes it grow faster. Guess that is what happened to me. My cancer showed up between yearly mammograms. It was aggressive lobular, 5 CM , 14 nodes positive, making it stage 3. I am in treatment now (Chemo) and doing fine.
