Common Questions and Answers about Estrogen and men

Avatar m tn Progesterone is needed to oppose oestrogen in men. If this goes on for long enough a man (yes, and a woman) can become oestrogen Dominant (too much oestrogen relative to Testosterone). By lowering stress and thus.. reducing cortisol, my progesterone levels should return to normal levels. If that is the case then why wouldn't it counter the extra oestrogen in my body automatically and remove the effects of oestrogen dominance?
Avatar m tn I swear doctors should not give them to you until they can sit down with you and go over them. What I know is that in your teens, estrogen is low and testosterone is high. As we get older, our estrogen level increases. That's normal. A lot of times as our estrogen level gets higher, our testosterone level gets lower. This equates a bit to the old cliché about sex drive in men, being crazy in the teens and less so as we get old.
Avatar m tn Risk factors for women, such as early exposure to radiation and higher estrogen exposure in utero, also seem to be relevant to men. For a time there was concern that men who got estrogen treatments for prostate cancer were more vulnerable to breast cancer, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Rather, prostate cancer can metastasize to the breast. (Remember that it remains prostate cancer; the cancer cells are prostate cancer cells, not breast cancer cells.
Avatar m tn Ovariectomy and estrogen supplementation were used to evaluate the effect of estrogen on HBV titers in transgenic mice with replicating HBV in hepatocytes. The effect of estrogen signaling on transcription of HBV genes, and the mechanisms of regulation, were studied in HepG2 cells. RESULTS: HBV titers increased in female mice after ovariectomy and decreased in male mice supplemented with estrogen. Hepatic expression of estrogen receptor (ER)? was increased by estrogen exposure.
Avatar m tn Elevated estrogen levels really do cause men to look and somewhat act more like women and less like men. High estrogen levels in men can double the risk of stroke and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks. Some research has also linked high estrogen levels to enlargement of the prostate and Prostate Cancer. When the rise in estrogen levels is accompanied by a decline in testosterone levels which is typically the case these risks are even greater.
233616 tn?1312787196 estrogen liver fibrosis ....and get 684,000 hits. Apparently the benefit to protecting the liver is well documented and the research has been around for a while. Yet my liver doctor didn't mention it, or suggest I go back on it.....but I did it through my endocrinologist as soon as I found out. I'm wondering how many ladies in here are aware of this, have any doctors told you??? or whether any men have considered a small dose to help slow the progression of this disease?
Avatar f tn It seems to me that if estrogen played much of a role in tx and SVR, all men would be up a creek because they have very little of it in their body. As for the depression that some of us get during tx, that is caused by an imbalance in neurotransmitters in our brain, not a hormone imbalance. Fashion... were you UND by week 12?
Avatar f tn ve been reading about as I asked for progesterone and estrogen testing - thyroid was not something I considered. Thanks for any help or insight.
Avatar n tn Estrogen is the hormone responsible foe epiphyseal closure for both men and women. It seems, for some men who suffer from either aromatise deficiency or estrogen resistance, the bones do not close and continue to grow during adulthood, otherwise, it is not normally expected.
Avatar f tn Been doing alrite - diagnosed pre men at 37 im 38 now so had it just over a year. Ok really apart from exhaustion and flushes. Just feeling a little bitter at the moment. My youngest child has started school so ive trained up and gone back to work Unfortunately with travel i was doing 12 hour shifts in a nursery. The flushes vary from hourly to two hourly and luckily i dont sweat bad but i burn nastily its like a reverse contraction! I was in line for promotion but have had to give it up.
Avatar m tn As far as the strains of HPV that can actually cause health issues beyond superficial inconveniences (i.e. genital warts), men are typically just carriers of the virus and never experience the serious health problems that women are capable of experiencing by the simple fact that they are female.
Avatar f tn What symptoms are you having? I would suspect by your lab results that you are quite Hyper! As both your FT4 and FT3 are OVER the top of thr ange for both. BOTH of them being SIGNIFICANTLY over. did you take your Armour prior to the blood test? What little I know is that too much Testosterone and it will be converted into estrogen. At least in men. I'm not sure if the same is true with females. You have got a "Whole lot of hormones going on".
Avatar m tn in April 2011, estrogen and progesterone receptor status is a predictive marker of early breast cancer and post-treatment relapse. As you get older your hormone levels decrease, and your fat cells in your body increases. This can cause higher levels of aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. The treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia in men and breast cancer in post-menopausal women is to use a class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors.
Avatar n tn I have heard that men wanting to either reassign their gender or simply to dress as women can take estrogen and that it minimizes the male genitals after a while, but have never heard how much. The only man I ever talked to who was into dressing female, looked great (in other words, you would not be able to tell he was anything but a very striking woman) even in a swimsuit, and although he was doubtless taking hormones, he had not had an operation.
Avatar n tn I am extremely depressed and am suffering with hypothyroidism, low testosterone, too much estrogen, high cholesterol and low Vitamin D what is wrong with me? I originally thought that everything here is linked to depression from stress and anxiety so I started taking Lexapro for the depression. But my wife thinks that maybe all of these things are linked to a health issue. About 11 months ago I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and low thyroid, so I am taking red rice yeast and .
Avatar n tn ve read on plenty of forums of women have outbreaks during ovulation. Estrogen levels are higher during ovulation, and there are studies showing that estrogen is linked to herpes. This is why women seem to have herpes more than men. It is just that women present more than men do because we have more estrogen. If I don't take the Valtrex, the outbreaks progress to oozing and crusting over. I really don't see what else this could be.
Avatar m tn m 39 and have recently been experiencing homosexual feelings for men. I really dont want to have these feelings and it had left me suicidal at one stage to the extent that I told my wife about this. It naturally upset her however she told me that she loved me and wanted us to stay together. I really dont want to have these feelings. Is there something I can take or is there some hormonal inbalance that could be causing this ?.
Avatar f tn Hi Will~ Yeah, I remember reading that article, back when I was struggling with all these hot flashes, and started rersearching Hep C and estrogen replacement. I ended upcompromising, by using a cream, that you rub in. But when I brought the estrogen cream up with my Hepa Doctor, she snapped something about estrogen causing "heart problems". I suppose, because some of these meds already put a strain on us older folks' hearts, etc.
Avatar m tn i went to the lab for blood work and discovered my thyroid was hypo, i had low T, and my estrogen was high. Ive been on armour thyroid 90mg for about 4 months and seen no improvements. i have a reoccurring pain in my thyroid, it gets much more intense after i masterbate, the brain fog also gets worse too. i still have no sex drive and i can only sometimes get an erection (usually if i haven't masterbated in awhile). I'm going to get my blood checked again in october.
Avatar n tn Breast cancer in men is a very slowly progressing disease, since it is encouraged by estrogen, men have little, therefore if they should get breast cancer it may well be a long time before symptoms occur. Two things: My surgeon said that my tumor was 7 years old, that was her guess. And secondly, she told be she just a week before did a double on a 23 year old guy. So don't listen to any of the common cliches about men and breast cancer.
Avatar f tn Estring, for example, releases over 90 days an amount equivalent to taking oral estrogen for just 2 days, and Vagifem, aready a very low dose estrogen product, is now available in a 10 mcg dose, as well as the original 20 mcg dose. (Both of these are reported to be preferrable to a similar third product, Estrace.) These products also appear to have a very, very low level of systemic absorption.
518117 tn?1429276273 I was under the impression that AD's were known for increasing cycling in both men and women. I have certainly read posts of men who have had this experience so it is not exclusive to women. I would be interested to know more as I have been recommended an antidepressant to add to the mix and have been holding off due to aprehension because of the negative things I have heard.
1325193 tn?1450127436 Worse yet, my estrogen was only 15 on a range of 25 to 55. Yes, men need estrogen too. Both of these numbers combined is a recipe for anxiety. How did it get that low?? One of the main causes of men under 65 for low t is opiate abuse and use. Now it all finally made sense. Why i started having anxiety before I even quit them, why it's been almost 9 months and still have the same anxiety i did from day one.
Avatar n tn Hello -- I have been trying to find out whether consuming flax seed would interfere with the efficacy of the taxol / herceptin treatments that I am receiving for my breast cancer. I understand from a study done at the University of Toronto that flax seed may help to eliminate breast cancer. However, I would not want to consume anything that would interfere with my regular medical treatment. The cancer is in the left side of my lymph system. It is estrogen-receptor and HER-2 positive.
