Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes and foot care time to act

diabetes

Avatar m tn Take your MIL to a doctor ASAP to treat "Her entire foot and calf now have a black undertone with black veins(or atleast that what it looks like) and are swollen." This sounds like a serious infection such as gangrene or the onset of diabetes neuropathy. Both, if left untreated, leads to amputation. Also, your MIL needs someone to look over her nutrition so she doesn't eat junk foods and to monitor her medication.
1281603 tn?1283798699 I ended up not waiting and taking him to Emerg. They are going to try to save the foot, using IV, oral and topical antibiotics, but they aren't confident. We'll go back to the hospital daily for assessment. I am astounded at how fast things can progress. This morning there was no sign of infection, only a blackened toe. This afternoon it was cellulitis, purple and very swollen with red lines travelling up the leg.
Avatar f tn I am healthy otherwise, just worsening symptoms. I want to know if there are viable options to go and ask my doctor or not to bother. If there is no viable options then I might as well just suffer in silence.
Avatar f tn Did you hurt your right foot? This swelling and redness could be due to a leg infection, secondary to trauma and bleeding or a blood clot in the leg. Have you undergone any recent surgery on the right leg, ankle or the foot? Is there any history of varicose veins or defective valves in the leg veins? I hope you are not taking any hormone like estrogens, perimenopausal? This needs urgent attention by a surgeon. Have you been checked for diabetes? It could be an abscess needing urgent drainage.
Avatar n tn I am a Type 1 diabetic who has recently been suffering from leg, foot, toe, ankle, thigh, and even hand cramps so bad that I can hardly stand it. I get the foot and leg and ankle cramps usually in the middle of the night, and then can't sleep. It is almost a nightly occurance. My ankle sort of keeps cramping up, and then it spreads to my toes and calf. It is absolutely unbearable. I am wondering if ANYONE can tell me where to start to find out what is causing this.
Avatar m tn It's best you seek and advice to a Podiatrist because they are the expert of foot.
Avatar n tn I HAD TO SINCE THE INSURANCE WOULD NOT COVER SOME OF IT SINCE IM NOT DIABETIC. I HAD TO GO TO THE WOUND CARE CENTER ONCE A WEEK FOR A YEAR AND A HALF.I ALSO HAD CELLULITIS ON MY RIGHT LEG. IT WAS TREATED THOUGH.THE CUT WAS GETTING BETTER. BUT THEN MY DAD LOST HIS JOB AND ALL OF OUR INSURANCE. SO I HAVENT SEEN A DOCTOR FOR SIX MONTHS.BECAUSE I SIMPLY CANT AFFORD ANYMORE DOCTOR BILLS. NOW MY TOE IS VERY RED AND SWOLLEN,HURTS BADLY.THE DRAINAGE STINKS AND IS LIGHT BROWN.
Avatar f tn Go to the Dr immediately though if you have any redness, pain, abnormal color etc. Foot care is very important for anyone who has diabetes.
Avatar n tn Also, this a diabetes forum. Sorry, we do not know how to respond to knee issues unless its related to diabetes.
Avatar f tn Helen, I would go back to the doctor already to be seen and not wait the five days. Wound management in persons with diabetes is critical to prevent complications. The treatment if the wound should be very agressive to make sure this heals. Please also work hard to control your blood sugar very well (ideally below 140 at all times), to help the healing process. Let us know how you go.
Avatar n tn //www.webmd.com/diabetes/diabetes-sores-ulcers-care You want to protect your feet with diabetes! How is your diabetes managed by the way?
Avatar f tn Please consider a low carb diet. This is the best approach to manage wieght and also control diabetes. It could also help you avoid lap band. Please look up the book "diabetes solutions" by Dr. Richard Bernstein. If you can take his advice on board (he is a type 1 diabetic and nearly 80 years old), it could be of great help to you.
Avatar m tn the took x-rays of her foot and diagnosed an avulsion fracture and cellulitis and put her on Cefalex and rest for one week. She went to her Orthopedist and he said he saw no fracture in the x-ray and the infection was going away and he suggested more rest with her foot up to relieve the swelling. It is now almost three weeks later and the swelling is only getting worse. She had an MRI yesterday, and last night noticed that a similar bump had started on her right foot.
1751415 tn?1315069443 ve been invaluable to our family and dealing with the nursing home as well. He is getting great care, outstanding care from them and they are wonderful to us as well. My father in law is really struggling and batling. He is now at the point where they are giving him strong meds for pain to keep him comfortable. He looks to be a half or less of his size, sleeps constantly, eats very little if at all, but drinks water as much as you will give it to him.
Avatar f tn My husband, who is 33 and overweight, was trying to go to sleep last night, got up out of bed and was complaining of burning, tingling sensations all over his right side. Mainly in his arm and his foot. I do not know if I am at the right forum, but I have always heard that burning and numbness in hands and feet is a sign of diabetes!!!!??? Anyone ever experience these sensations before? If it is serious we will go to the doc but it is hard because we have no insurance and cannot afford it.
Avatar m tn There are other causes but these are the most common problems. You need to get yourself checked of diabetes, blood pressure, anemia and also mineral balance to diagnose the problem if you have it in a chronic way then I suggest you to see a neurologist. Take care!
1091845 tn?1263162000 To be honest, due to mental health issues, I ignored the syptoms of diabetes for maybe six to nine months, and I feel I am paying for that now. I have terrible burning in the toes of my left foot. It seems to hurt more at night. My Doctor said it may improve now that I am on insulin, but if anything. it seems to be getting worse. What sort of pain relief should I be using. I have tried many OTC pain killers, but they really don't seem to help that much.
Avatar f tn I am getting these dark red blister looking things on my right foot only. They show up several at time, usually on the sides of my foot and in the arch. They are hard and don't seem to have any fluid in them. One day it will show up and in a week it will go away and there will be lots of dry skin to peel away. Now on the right side of my right foot there is a place the size of a nickel that must have been dark red at one time and now the skin has come off.
