Depo provera and weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and weight loss

depo-provera

Is it possible to loose the weight? Why did I gain weight, loose it, and it came back? Am I just eating junk and not exercising? Do you think the weight could be lost with a better diet and excercise? What would you do in my situation?
I just went to the GYN and got my annual pelvic exam and my first shot of depo and so far everything has been okay. However, once I didn't get my period I started to worry and I took a pregnancy test just in case and it did come out negative. But I'm still freaking out since I am only 18 and really do not want to be pregnant. So is it normal to be late for your period after getting the shot? or should I take another test? Thanks.
i was on the minipill for two years i am not getting my period now doctor wants to put me on depo provera she claims after awhile the affectiveness of the minpill wears off and depo would be best for me being that it is also a progesteron only contraceptive and will continue not getting my period am afraid because of all the bad things i hear about it any suggetions?
Just from my experence I was on depo shot and you have signs of pregnancy and are not pregnant and there is no way possiable you could feel you baby kick so soon you don't start feeling any movement until your about 4months pregnant I had a baby about 5months ago tomorrow is 5months and well I didn't actually really feel him move until I was 4months along maybe a lil ferther and I had a m/c on the depo shot the shot was in my systom but the shot killed the baby well anyways I don't think a baby
Has anyone ever been on the depo provera shot before? If so how did it go for you?
I don't know why this would make you lose weight, but it will have no interaction at all with birth control whether pills or Depo Provera. Depo Provera has been implicated with weight gain. Some say it is the increased appetite due to the potent progestin, but probably more than that. Some women won't gain an ounce, but others will put it on very quickly. The number of meds that actually have the potential to make birth control less effective is very short.
Your body is not doing what it normally does. Anyways, after you get off the pill you can gain alot of water weight and it can take up to 10 to 18 months to conceive. I would rather go on the pill than the depo any day. Trust me i was on it for 5 years.
If you can tough it out to the next dose the depo usually balances out and you won't have as much trouble. As far as the weight gain goes. well that is something you will face with almost every birth control hormones.
My gyne offered me the depo shot in march of 2007 because i was 23, on loestrin24, effexor, and metroprolol(blood pressure med), and i still had high blood pressure, in fear of me having a stroke at 23 my gyne mentioned the oh glorious depo provera(yea right), i got my shot in march and one in may, my hubbys in the military and we had to move to texas but before we left i had a gyne visit and my pap came up abnormal again which it was fine for a yr, until i started depo?
Then I was diagnosed with osteopenia, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and NOW depo-induced menopause. Are they all related to depo-provera use? I was taking it for 5 years. In what order do I treat this set of disorders? Why is my jaw the primary target? Will the bone loss stop, reverse? My endocrinologist said I should be taking hormone-replacement therapy, but that's what started me on this road to begin with! Help! I really don't want to have menopause twice. Any suggestions?
I was given a shot of depo-provera yesterday...and when I asked about side affects all I was told was nausea, headache, and dizziness. After reading quite a few articles online, it seems there are a lot more serious side affects than I was led to believe. I've been having lots of chest pain and shortness of breath, but the doctor doesn't seem to think it's related to the shot.
I have one friend that gained 15 lbs in three months on depo and i have another friend who suffered from hair loss while on depo. The key is just finding a birth control method that works for you and for your body and remember that all birth control have some sort of side effect.
I suffered so many side effects with the shot I had to go off it and back onto the pill. Mr Dr hates the Depo shot and was glad when I wanted to go back on the pill. But I did go on the Ortho Evra Patch when that first came out and that was really good. I'm off bc now since we are ttc. But when we're done I'm going back on the patch or maybe the new bc pill that is a dissolving pill you chase with a glass of water.
I did ONE shot and had the whole bag full of side effects, WEIGHT GAIN, acne, mood swings, sleep loss, and many other terrible symptoms, it's been a year now and I have been going to doctors trying to get back to normal. I had to get on progesterone to get a cycle and that worked one time. Finally I started my own cycle all by myself! I have HIGH hopes of TTC. If ANYONE reads this DO NOT get on Depo, the negatives outweigh the positives.
Goodman, I wonder if you have any information about how Depo-Provera can change the symptoms of ovarian cancer v. ovarian cysts? I have been on Depo-Provera for two years and it seems that it would mask all the symptoms that are most likely to identify a cyst vs. a tumour. Do you know anything about how the two would look different in the presence of Depo-Provera?
I also have learned that Depo causes bone density loss so maybe I am not menopausal. I don't mean to sound whiny and pitiful, but I can hardly remember the energetic, optimistic person that I used to be. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired! I have been searching the net and find lots of women with lots of side effects from taking Depo Provera, but I am trying to find other women who have experienced problems after QUITTING the injections.
hello, my name is marjory and i was on depo for about 9 months today is 12/18/06 i was pregnant in may of 05 and had an abortion in aug of 05 and then went straight to depo and had my last shot on april 06 so that whole time i did not have any periods now i have been off the shot for about 5 or six months and have been having sex every day and hoping to get pregnant do you think i will be able to??
I am in a group where all the women are trying to conceive after the depo provera. Many have been trying to conceive for years, and no luck. And it seems like those who do conceive have miscarriages soon after. Its like 80% of the women who get pg have a miscarriage. Is this linked to the depo? Age? Im 22 and am trying to conceive #2. (my son is 6 now) I am so scared that it might happen to me.
I am currently taking Depo provera shots for birth control but am considering the HCG shots for weight loss. Can this decrease the affect of my depo shot and allow me to become pregnant?
Yes, Depo Provera can and often does make you gain weight. Lots of people have used it and gained weight on it.
Yes, you can loose Depo Provera Weight and get your looks back. The reason you gained the weight is the Depo. Please know it is not your fault. Depo causes insulin resistance, Metabolic syndrome (syndrome X) and ovarian cysts in some women. You were smart to discontinue it. Please Google insulin resistance. You can drop these pounds using low carb and zero carb diets. It won't take long.
Btw, she has been seeing her doctors for years now about her struggle to lose any weight and also has irregular periods, some acne and problems with regular bad stomachs/tiredness. Any help much apprecated as she's very depressed about it.
In August of 2010 I took the Depo Provera shot and it really messed up my hormones. I have hypothyroidism, high prolactin levels and PCOS. My doctor has decided to put me on Metformin to treat the PCOS because the Synthroid doesn't seem to be helping my weight complaints much at all. I'm 125 pounds now and no matter how healthy I eat and how much I work out, I can't lose weight.
Doc says I'am borderline diabetic and need to lose weight. The drug was prescribed to help with the weight loss. However she stressed that you still need to watch your diet and exercise. I have been doing this for a long time but kept going up and down with my weight. I am 5 4" and currently weigh 235.5. I weigh in every Tuesday and after 4 days I lost 3 pounds. I am now starting to take the meds 2 xs a day so it will be interesting to see what happens next week.
You girls have to discontinue Depo Provera at once and I highly recommend never putting any hormones into your bodies ever again. I have experienced a living nightmare from Depo Prover for the past three years. After I got the Depo shot I went home and researched on the web about the drug. I cried for three hours in fear that that could happen to me. What happened was worse. Five days after the shot a menstrual cycle started that would not cease. It wasn't a normal cycle.
If you want to lose weight faster after depo-provera, do what my Dr. told me. I was eating healthy and eating 1500 cals a day. She told me to eat only meat and fat (so, cheese, meat, chicken, butter, oils, eggs) anything zero carb. I didn't believe her. I had to have my tortillas and salads! She also suggested dropping down my calories to 50-1000. What? And starve? But I wasn't hungry after trying it. So, guess what. I told her I would try her crazy advice for a week.
all the weight gain from depo has depo in it!!! do your best to lose any weight gained on it and drink lots of water. feel free to e-mail me and i can answer any questions you might have. love and hugs....
I was/am a runner, and I worked out at least 3 days a week, with cardio and some weight lifting, and kept a food journal to help me watch my calorie intake. I was doing everything right, except for being on the Depo. It was no use that I was exercising so much and eating so well....the Depo still made me gain weight like crazy! I have been off of the Depo for almost a year now, and there is still no sign of weight loss being possible for me yet.
*raises hand* I've had nothing BUT problems since going off Depo about 3 and half years ago. SEVERE weight gain (almost immediately), period problems, depression, problems before and after periods (diarahhea, naseau)....also pretty severe acne.... But I never DID get pregnant....*sigh* I wish there was a civil lawsuit against Depo because its pretty much ruined my life....
Other causes for failure of have menses (abnormalities of thyroid, prolactin, FSH), scar within the uterus (Asherman's Syndrome), chronic illness, medications, weight gain/weight loss, exercise all need to be considered. Clomiphene is the beginning therapy to stimulate return of menses and can be used in doses up to 200 mg (4 tablets) for 7 days. When this therapy fails, gonadotropin therapies can be considered.
