Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies skin

cat-allergies

Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
7639611 tn?1392877261 The symptoms can also be due to cat allergy. Since you have known allergies to pollen, dust mites and pet dander, chances of cat allergy are high. You may have always been allergic but symptoms may not have been very pronounced. Only a skin test (that tests for cat allergy) will rule out for sure whether it is cat allergy or not. If it is cat allergy, then if you do not take anti-allergic pills, the symptoms will resurface time and again.
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
1756384 tn?1312562154 Even though I vacuum and dust continually!, cat hair gets up my nose, in my throat and "jumps" on my legs, makes me itch on my face and also seems to cause my itching uinder my breast area, around where my underwear where it is tight around the creases of my skin( inside thigh area for example). It also makes my mood suck! I have been on Singulair for one week. daily saline nose rinses, veramist nose spray. It seemed to help a little bit but now not much.
Avatar f tn Allergies have a genetic basis but not always to the same allergen. Two parents with allergies (50% chance of developing allergies), one parent 30%. It is possible that it is an allergy, however make sure the cat wasn't bathed with anything, I reacted with hives once to the shampoo I used on a puppy at work.
Avatar m tn I've developed severe allergies since moving in with my girlfriend who has a cat and a dog. So severe that I am constantly sick whenever home, find myself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air (asthma - I have an inhaler), and hacking up a lung in the mornings. We've tried vacuuming more and bathing the animals but it being a small town home, living in close quarters, it does not seem to help. Now we are looking at me moving out and starting allergy shots.
Avatar f tn This needs a Vet visit and an antibiotic, allergies with cats appear on their skin, like sores and hair loss, not like with us and the symptoms you describe.
Avatar f tn m curious...What allergies are the shots for? Because of all the skin issues now, does it mean that the allergy injections are not working? Or, do they feel she has become allergic to new items? Has she always been like this or is it a seasonal thing? What do you feed as a primary food? Have you tried Benedryl to help her rest? Let me know.....
Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
Avatar n tn The fat lip also is commonly secondarily infected with bacteria, so I would recommend a 2-3 week course of antibiotics if not already done. The three types of allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely.
Avatar f tn Food allergies usually manifest around the face and ears. Flea allergies will appear at the hind end where they seek warmth. Either way sounds like kitty is miserable. Also, most important :: You have a little child to protect and some skin conditions like ringworm, are highly contagious and everyone must stay out of contact with these sores. Best to know for sure and help your kitty and your family at the same time. Please let us know what the vet has to say, K?
779797 tn?1263618235 Ive got an 8 year old cat who has recently got some odd looking skin marks. It looked like he got scratched by something , but after the scratches healed, i noticed a bump and some weird skin. The bump is kind of small, and its all black. No red irriation, it isnt itching him, its just there. There was some flaking of the skin and a slight bit of fur coming out, but thats the extent of it. Note he is lacking hair in front of his ears, just normal.
Avatar f tn Only a skin test will rule out for sure whether it was cat allergy or not. Many people who own cats develop allergies after some time. The other possibility is pollen and mold. Please consult a skin specialist and get a skin test for allergy or a RAST panel. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
791533 tn?1309745344 Having an exam and simple hair/skin tests will likely reveal the problem to your veterinarian and thus to you to get your cat treated well. Fleas, mites, allergies, other parasites, bladder problems, skin infections can all be factors in what is happening in your cat and how to treat it. It is highly likely that one or more of these problems is the culprit that needs prompt veterinary treatment.
Avatar n tn My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays, she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.
Avatar f tn The allergy would be to cat dander, which as Linda said, is actually pollen and other irritants that migrate to cat fur. The symptoms are those typical of airborne allergies and rarely cause skin itching. However, if the cat has fleas that could certainly account for your itching.
Avatar n tn Your symptoms present exactly the same as mine. I have cat allergies, but have had a cat for the past year with no problems. However, just a few days before I got this rash, we took in another cat. So I'm thinking it could be allergies that cat. However, when I looked up pictures of the rash online, it looked more like irritant contact dermatitis rather than allergic contact dermatitis. Oh dear, I just saw that you wrote in 2008, so I'm sure your rash is gone by now.
Avatar f tn A cat that was injured before or hurt in any way often pull there hair out. Pain causes them to pull out the hair in places where there in pain or either itching from healing.
1232362 tn?1333135406 I was hoping you would come along and answer - thanks FM. Don't you also give Akira a little Zyrtec?
Avatar n tn First of all, are you 100% sure that the wound is because she keeps scratching? If she is, you have to make sure she doesn't have fleas or allergies. Allergy causes a cat to scratch constantly, and it may be caused by anything, from food to wool, to any substance or flea collars. The cat will immediately start scratching until the skin gets irritated. Don't put cortizone on the wound. Triple antibiotics will help keep the wound from drying out and prevent infection of the wound.
Avatar f tn I have changed her cat food 2x but no change. I tried oral suppliments for her skin and coat but gave up after fighting her to take it. any suggestions?
