Ammonia and lungs

Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia and lungs

When I do any cardiovascular exercise and start to get winded, I get a very strong ammonia like smell in my nose, like it is coming out of my lungs. This smell is not coming from outside my body, but internally. It's almost like the alcohol smell that goes up the back of your nose when you drink a shot of liquor. I have had this all my life and just sort of assumed it was the same for everybody, but apparently other people don't have the same thing. What could be causing it?
Someone mentioned elevated blood ammonia levels. I'm feeling much better now. But I looked up Hyperammonemia and my symptoms were exactly like what I read. Confusion, anxiety, no appetite ect. I'm on week 45 fo tx,and like I said I'm 75% back to normal. I see Gastro on 1/04 and i'm going to discuss this with him then. I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences with this.

Ammonia should be listed under ammonia on blood test result. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is common for GI bleeding to exacerbate hepatic encephalopathy.
In patients with advanced cirrhosis, the liver is no longer able to metabolize the ammonia and convert it to urea so the ammonia builds up the in body producing and travels to the person's brain with psychological and other effects.
A detailed examination by a physician/cardiologist and investigations like ECG, Echocardiography and angiography can confirm the diagnosis. Are you taking any antidiabetics or chemotherapy? It is also one of the causes of pulmonary edema. Lung infections like pneumonia ,exposure to certain chemicals like chlorine, ammonia or nitrogen dioxide, smoke inhalation and certain kidney diseases can also cause it. Please visit your doctor and get yourself examined. Do keep posting.
He was admitted Monday night with severe confusion. His ammonia level was 152 and WBC/RBC and hemaglobin were extremely low. Treatment was started immediately to lower the ammonia level. Wednesday was 149, yesterday was 230 and today was 190. The doctor said it isn't responding to treatment, although the medicine definitely is keeping him cleaned out. They gave him platelets last night, but the level dropped even lower today.
I have had doctors at thier wits end trying to find out my problem. I have had kidney cancer and one of the symptoms for ammonia smell is failing kidneys. I'm also a diabetic and keotosis was also a reason for the ammonia smell. I would get VERY sick at the times of the ammonia smell. Of course, some doctors said it was my sinus problems. It took me 10 years to isolate the problem. Whenever I ate lettuce I became very sick the next day.
if you don't take care of this it could spread very rapidly to lungs and other parts of your body.
Make sure you don't have acid reflux, as it can be a cause of asthma. Find out what the city puts in your water. Both chlorine and ammonia can be used, and if they are, you will want a filter so your shower isn't gassing you with these chemical vapors. If you see they useor chloramine, that's ammonia mixed with chlorine. You will need a whole-house water filter specially made for chloramine, unfortunately.
You may have to throw out all your rugs, spray the walls with ammonia to kill mold and repain and get an electrostatic dust precipator. You may have a home so toxic (or a workplace) you have to move. An asthmatic attack is extremely frightening and often taken too licghtly by physicians, emergency room personnel and ambulance EMT's. Keep albuterol handy. As you know, in a short time you can "fall off the cliff".

I'd get a company to come and test your water. Maybe a water filter would fix it. I want to get one as our water has both chlorine and ammonia added, which is terrible for skin, hair and lungs. The construction company I work for uses Kinetico. The system I need is around $1200, so I don't have it yet.
They have found he has a huge hernia in his abdomen and that was pushing against his lungs making the pneumonia worse,as soon as they can stabilise him they will operate. He is now telling my sister he is ready to leave and be with his mum and dad,it's heartbreaking to hear. He even told his 19 year old step daughters boyfriend that he will be the man of the house now and to look after his girls. My sister is wondering if it's a premonition.
The premise of most pathophysiologic theories involves the accumulation of ammonia in the central nervous system, producing alterations of neurotransmission that affect consciousness and behavior. Ammonia interferes with brain function at many sites. Ammonia crosses the blood-brain barrier and directly depresses the central nervous system.

Sterilizing the bowel by giving neomycin, a drug that is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, may prevent ammonia formation by decreasing bacterial counts. LACTULOSE AND LACTOBACILUS GG (prebiotic and probiotic) should be given to help contain ammonia in the gastrointestinal tract where it can be excreted in the feces.
They have gotten most of the water off of him, were removing the cathedar today, have prescribed him insulin pills, water pills, and some form of pill that helps with the amount of toxic ammonia (?) which goes to the brain and causing the confusion in his thinking. He is supposed to be released in his own care tomorrow, if he is still stable. Still sounds as if his liver is failing, and not sure what the treatment will be from this point.
First get my bowels working and my ammonia down. I'm out for a few weeks right before Xmas, that figures.
My joints are stiff and right side foot, knee and hand give me problems and swell. Confusion and memroy loss are also a concern of mine. I can forget something very shortly after I have had a conversation and cannot stay focused on anything. I am getting ready to go to a neurologist in two weeks and need to know what to ask. I feel that there is something underlying and I am anxious to find out what it is. Please help me. I am 40 yo female and am in real pain a lot of the time.
The truth is CIGARETTES are BAD for everyone and as I stated, if you want to smoke formaldehyde and ammonia so be it but just remember that your unborn child is exposed to it. Every baby is born differently but you bet there will be some sort of health issue down the road. How can there not be.. the poisons in smokes are insane and deadly! I wouldn't be applauding. If you have issues with life in general that makes you smoke, find safer ways to manage them.
His bilirubin is rising, albumin is falling, hemoglobin and hematocrit and RBC are all critically low and INR is prolonged. He has episodic moments of stumbling, breaking dishes (due to lack of grasp) slurred speech episodes....This is the worst case of suffering I have ever witnessed. I did find out he would qualify for hospice but he would have to agree to it, but no one can convince him that it means he has 6 months or less.
i have suffered from bad breath for more than fifteen years has devastated me and slowed down my life terribly that i sometimes think of committing afraid to be around people, am known around as the girl with stinky breath,,,,and alot more of negative stuff and i feel like i could be a different person today had been normal like everybody else.
The vet who was talking to the couple and she went into the room where the catboxes were, and commented on the smell, and she had handheld meter that she set down on the floor. It measured ammonia in the air. OSHA has limits of something like 25 ppm for people working in industry, apparently over that amount of ammonia in the air is bad for the lungs. As they were talking, the meter went over 25, then over 40, then over 60, then I think it stopped in the 70s or 80s.
I saw my primary doctor and asked him to do an ammonia level since I can't seem to even balance myself and he brushed that one off. I've been to 4 specialists and they seem not to care. After the holidays I'm just going to check myself into the hospital and have them do every test for HepC there is. I don't know if you've experienced any problem with your doctors, but it becomes more than annoying after a certain point. Thanks for your reply.
One of my friends was the Viet Nam Vets Hep C top folks and he told me I would have died of old age before the Hep C did it Lots of information on the website you suggested --- going to take a lot of time to read through I just feel like the treatment changed pathways in my body from side effects that never reverted back to the way they were prior to treatment ---- almost like road work where they divert traffic and when the work was finished the original road never opened back up I have been
5-HTP is used for sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, migraine and tension-type headaches, fibromyalgia, binge eating associated with obesity, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and along with prescription drugs to treat seizure disorder and Parkinson's disease. How does it work? 5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of the chemical serotonin.
But I had gone through cat scans,MRIs, Blood test after blood test, ammonia buildup --- and not a darn doctor understood from my symptoms that it was liver related. Of course, now, they all go --- ahhh yes... It was your liver. LOL! But still - for me --- I felt it was killing me. And I do not wish to be killed by a disease - whether I'm eventually going to adapt to it or not. Just my opinion - --- just my thoughts on the matter. I am pro treatment tho...
What puzzles me is I have a constant bitter/ ammonia type taste in my mouth, and most hot foods trigger this smell as the food reaches my lips, but tames down the bitter/ ammonia smell when I am chewing. Most flavors are severely muted or taste like and ingedient is missing. I have tried a sinus rinse for several days, without any improvement. I do have acid reflux and I have been taking prilosec otc daily. I also take phexophenadine during the summer months (although not now).
Maybe in the workup for this other possiblities can be found or ruled out. I would suggest lactate, pyruvate, ammonia, serum amino acids, urine organic acids, and carnitine levels.
These reactions take place usually in seconds or minutes at the most, and are brought on by contact with tissie, i/e/ skin absorption, or particulate in the throat of that offending food bringing on swelling of the lungs/throat even before what hits the bloodstream via the stomach and liver routes. So you are talking here about an instantaneous autoimmune overreaction, as say opposed to one that comes on over an hour or two, as thing metabolize in the stomach and liver.
