Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia and lungs

ammonia

Avatar f tn When I do any cardiovascular exercise and start to get winded, I get a very strong ammonia like smell in my nose, like it is coming out of my lungs. This smell is not coming from outside my body, but internally. It's almost like the alcohol smell that goes up the back of your nose when you drink a shot of liquor. I have had this all my life and just sort of assumed it was the same for everybody, but apparently other people don't have the same thing. What could be causing it?
Avatar f tn The vet who was talking to the couple and she went into the room where the catboxes were, and commented on the smell, and she had handheld meter that she set down on the floor. It measured ammonia in the air. OSHA has limits of something like 25 ppm for people working in industry, apparently over that amount of ammonia in the air is bad for the lungs. As they were talking, the meter went over 25, then over 40, then over 60, then I think it stopped in the 70s or 80s.
Avatar m tn i did the same thing. except my habit was between $ 20 -70 a day over the course of a year and a half but really only every single day in a row for maybe the last six or seven months till i od'd and just got scared and quit and ive touched any form of coke since. i remember coughing up black phelm. i remember the taste of it. but i also know this stopped happening maybe a week after i quit smoking. i dont smoke cigarettes.
Avatar m tn In patients with advanced cirrhosis, the liver is no longer able to metabolize the ammonia and convert it to urea so the ammonia builds up the in body producing and travels to the person's brain with psychological and other effects.

Please give me your comment and opinion in this as am really worried . Also , I know this might not be related to this forum , but I have been told later that I should have urinated in a small cup first during the test not directly to the container . would it cause any health issues that i urinated directly into the container ?

Avatar f tn t have acid reflux, as it can be a cause of asthma. Find out what the city puts in your water. Both chlorine and ammonia can be used, and if they are, you will want a filter so your shower isn't gassing you with these chemical vapors. If you see they useor chloramine, that's ammonia mixed with chlorine. You will need a whole-house water filter specially made for chloramine, unfortunately.
Avatar m tn What can cause a ammonia smell in sweat and Colin? the girl had the same smell.
Avatar f tn t get the chance to do this because of loss of function, the chemicals reach the lungs (and urine) largely unadulterated. And when they are breathed (or urinated) out, they give off their distinctive odor. Some people call it the "breath of the dead" and it can be quite repulsive to some people. As with the breath normally, the cirrhotic is unaware of the smell as we become adjusted to our own smell over time.
Avatar f tn He was admitted Monday night with severe confusion. His ammonia level was 152 and WBC/RBC and hemaglobin were extremely low. Treatment was started immediately to lower the ammonia level. Wednesday was 149, yesterday was 230 and today was 190. The doctor said it isn't responding to treatment, although the medicine definitely is keeping him cleaned out. They gave him platelets last night, but the level dropped even lower today.
Avatar m tn My liver disease also caused my serum sodium level to drop off (a condition known as Hyponatremia) and a low sodium level can produce a dementia similar to high ammonia levels but is more difficult to treat (at least in my experience).

1008841 tn?1293598960 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Avatar n tn But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. He does not eat much as his taste buds are totally out of wack. Most foods taste very salty. And of course he does sleep alot.
Avatar f tn I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I work in a paint department. I mix colors and clean up paint pretty much. Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. I've been using it every day for a few months to get the paint off of my hands. Could it have hurt my baby?

Avatar f tn I copied and pasted this info from WebMD. IUn used "urine and ammonia" in the search field. Within the article was a subsection dealing with smell. Here it is. I hope it helps: Odor Changes Urine normally doesn't have a very strong smell. If you get a whiff of something particularly pungent, you could have an infection or urinary stones, which can create an ammonia-like odor. Diabetics might notice that their urine smells sweet, because of excess sugar.

Ammonia interferes with brain function at many sites. Ammonia crosses the blood-brain barrier and directly depresses the central nervous system.
Avatar n tn I smell ammonia. No one else can smell it. This happens off and on and in many different locations. I have read that this happens to people after a weight training session but I don't work out. It has happened when I was just sitting reading a book. I have seen my GP secondary to ill feeling for a year. The only abnormal labs are slightly elevated sed rate and slightly elevated WBC. I have muscle pain and weakness and extreme fatigue. My Doctor says he has no idea what is wrong with me.
Avatar m tn They used to add chlorine, which was bad enough, but now they add ammonia also. It is not a good mixture for our skin, hair or lungs. You might want to see if you can afford a shower filter that filters out the mixture, known as chloramine. Other suggestions would be doing a vinegar cool rinse or trying neem shampoo. But I really have to filter the water and do the other things too. My other shampoo I switch back and forth with is Neutrogena Clean shampoo. The green one.
