Common Questions and Answers about Accutane users

accutane

Avatar m tn ve just been recently prescribed by my dermatologist Isotretinoin (accutane) and am on my 4th day of treatment. After doing extensive research on how accutane affects growth, it really concerns me as I'm currently only 16 years and 8 months old and hence am still in the growing stage of my life. My dermatologist however has prescribed me a very low dosage of 10mg per day for 7 consecutive days, after which would be switching onto a 30mg PER WEEK dose.
Avatar m tn It is not that all accutane users will develop some form of GI probems, but that some will and it can be serious. Now that you have taken the drug, and stopped using it, there is not much more you can do to prevent these problems. However, it is a very good sign that you don't have any symptoms currently. Just continue to eat a healthy diet and follow up with your doctor with any problems you develop in the future.
Avatar n tn I am unsure if the migraine could be connected to Accutane, but I did a little research and some instances of migraines have been reported by Accutane users. I am just uncertain because I haven't been on it very long, but I am already experiencing dry lips, so I suppose I could be experiencing other side effects already, too.
Avatar f tn oh how interesting.. i was in my 20s and took roacutane for acne.. now 25 years later i have been diagnosed with sjogrens and other autoimmune diseases.. i always believed those tablets did me harm.. at the time my eyes were dry and skin too... was told to stay out the sun and that my mucus membranes would temporarily dry out... fast forward to now... years after stoppin the tablets.. and this is what i am left with.. .is there a proven link i wonder??
Avatar n tn Users of isotreinoin (Accutane) harbor much more staphylococcus bacteria than others in the general population. I am a victim of Accutane and have to take Bactrim daily to combat infections all over my body.
Avatar f tn I would not reccomend accutane is she is planing on becoming pregnant in the next 5 years. Plus it will only be a quick fix, i'd try a natropath to se what the underlying cause of the acne might be ( horomone inbalance, allergy to something...
Avatar n tn I have read about a few other cases where accutane users developed scalp folliculitis after treatment. Do you see a correlation? Is the topical antibiotic enough? Does staph have to enter through broken skin to cause an infection, or can its prescence on top of the skin be enough?
Avatar n tn I never wanted to really speak openly about my acne but after reading Sean and your story i want to warn all future accutane users to realize this is not a 100% quick fix also to realize the side affects of Roacutane (accutane). i have had acne since i was 12 I was put on this medication when i was 14 and am now 23 still with acne yes accutane will problably make your skin look the best it ever has, if you are lucky for a long time.
Avatar f tn Hi. Accutane increases the risk of liver problems so avoid too much alcohol whilst taking this medicine. Eloise.
Avatar m tn Take accutane, i'm 17 now and went on it when I was 16 and it worked wonders and keeps tje acne away, I had moderate acne and oily skin too....I play Major Junior hockey and it didn't affect my play in a negative bodily way, it boosted my confidence if anything!......I did a 4 month treatment of it on a lower dose so I would reccommend that, higher doses are for sever cases like grade 4 or between 3 and 4.....
Avatar m tn Other necessary precautions are to avoid exposure to UV rays, avoid too much alcohol, and not to take tetracycline antibiotics whilst on Accutane or for 5 weeks afterwards. Female Accutane patients must use two forms of contraception whilst on Accutane and for 5 weeks afterwards. Male patients do not need to abstain from unprotected sex but must not donate blood in case it is given to a pregnant women.
Avatar n tn 17 year old daughter having stomach issues, just got a positive test for celiac, has bad acne, derm wants to put her on accutane. I am worried about the accutane and her stomach. Not sure celiac is only cause of stomach aches. Also birth control pill used to control acne, then she went off and it came back worse than ever. She is back on the pill for almost 3 months and it is not working. Why?
Avatar n tn My dermatologist decided it was time to give accutane a try. I did a 7 month course and reached the target cumulative dose of 120 mg/kg. I did not have much of an initial breakout, was pretty much clear for months 3 to 6. Near the end of my course I started to get a few zits. It has now been three weeks post-accutane, and I am starting to get more and more whiteheads. Not the big inflamed whiteheads I used to get but it looks like things are returning.
Avatar m tn weight loss ( I was up to 160 right before accutane, lost 20-25 pounds in less than 2 months right after I stopped accutane, and am down to 120 currently) I feel like I have no muscle or fat on me. I'm always hungry but I can't gain a pound.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been on accutane for about alittle over a month. My dose is 20mg per day. I noticed about my fifth week using it that I developed a rash on the top of both my hands. It looks like little dots/pimples. They don't itch or burn. I thought it was ezema but I don't know. Is this a side effect from the accutane? Does anyone know how to treat this rash? I never had this before.
Avatar n tn I am 20 years old I was using accutane for 6 months, I was supposed to have a small surgery in my pelvis while on the drug but my doctor told me to wait and he explained that no surgery should be performed because the drug does indeed interfere with wound healing in fact he recommended to get the surgery 6 months after I have been off the drug but you should definitely ask her doctor/surgeon about it and get a better opinion ...wish you and your daughter the best.
Avatar n tn 27 years old, male, 130 lbs. First month, I started 20mg/day. Second month, 40mg/day. I'm starting my third month with 60mg/day now. Last night, I felt noticeable pain on my right ankle. The pain is still bearable. Rashes on my arms are more pronounced. I plan to continue my 60mg/day. I want my face to clear up and I'm going to hold out as long as I can. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't get any permanent joint pains like many have expressed here. How is everyone else doing?
Avatar n tn By all means discuss this with your dermatologist and share your frustration. There are other options besides Accutane. If you do take Accutane, you will need regular blood tests to check your liver and your cholesterol and triglycerides. You will also need to register with the Federal iPledge program, or else no pharmacy can dispense the medication. When Accutane is given for the kind of acne you say you have, it may clear things up, only to have the acne return several months later.
Avatar f tn Tomorrow will mark day 4 that I am late on my period. I took Accutane from approximately July 20th-August 20th, then got off of it for about a week, and got back on it around August 28th. I was supposed to have my period on Sept. 3rd, and have never been late before. I've been a day early on a few occasions, but never 4 days late. I was wondering if anyone knows if Accutane could effect my menstrual cycle. Thank you.
Avatar m tn My dermatologist has prescribed me Isotretinoin (Accutane) around 20 mg. However i feel uneasy and very worried because i had read the following medical research papers where it tells the harmful side effects Isotretinoin has such as teratogenic and more importantly the cause of eye disorders, like impaired night vision, cataracts, optic neuritis, corneal opacities and dry eye. I had check in PubMed about this and i encountered the following http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10746459.
Avatar f tn I think after researching- I got my symtoms from several courses of Accutane medicine. Which they have pulled from the market. Any one else have the same problems from 10 yrs ago of using Accutane and what did you do to manage the IBS and stomach issues??
