Abscess healing

Common Questions and Answers about Abscess healing

abscess

Generally such wounds that do not heal are called non-healing ulcers in medical term. They could be non healing due to underlying infection, low supply of oxygen to the wound that is reducing the healing process, underlying diabetes, or due to underlying dermatitis. Wounds heal slower in smokers or alcoholics who have been drinking for a long time. So these have to be ruled out. Also diabetes leads peripheral neuropathy, atherosclerosis etc which make wound healing troublesome.
In Nov 2008, I had a swelling below my right breast which was diagnosed as "Abscess". It would ooze out puss with blood and was very painful. After healing,a scar developed around that spot and A FOUL SMELL THAT OF PUS actually emanates from that area(i.e when you touch the area surrounding the scar) What could be happening inside?
Yesterday i went back to the emergency room and the abscess was lanced but nothing came again but blood. It is so hard and large the doctor said it was urated i dont know the exact word but it needs to be surgically removed. So has anyone had abscess in the below the vagina are surgically removed? If so did you have to stay overnight in the hospital? Was their a lot of pain afterward?
I had an abscess in my right breast 10 years ago and it left a little lump after it healed. Two weeks ago I developed an abscess in the same spot. My GP recommended a week of antibiotics (Augmentin) and it started to drain on its own two days back. I feel a thickened area which hasn't gone down. Should I be worried? The abscess continues to drain slowly and I have covered it with sterilized gauze. Please help.
The causes of non healing groin abscess could be due to underlying infection, low supply of oxygen to the wound that is reducing the healing process, underlying diabetes, or due to underlying dermatitis. Wounds heal slower in smokers or alcoholics .Discuss with your doctor the above mentioned possibilities. Do keep us posted. Best of luck and regards!
A painful lump in the vulvar region, fever, swelling in that local area are few common presenting symptoms of this abscess. Take analgesic like Tynelol for pain relief. To help healing, soak the area in a shallow, warm bath or a sitz bath. The cyst may break open on its own but if it is very painful it may need to be drained. An antibiotic course may be necessary. Visit a doctor for assistance. Keep me posted. Best wishes and take care!

I just had a bartholin abscess surgically removed. I wanted to know when i could have sex again.
He is treating me for a tooth abscess, and started me on Antibiotics and pain meds. I'm just wondering - the puss pockets seems to be about the same size, and is mostly uncomfortable. How long until I can expect it to start "healing"? I know the infection will not totally subside until I have the tooth removed, but I'm just wondering how long before the swelling might subside. Also, what would happen if the abscess were to burst?

The fact that the abscess has hardened and draining it was not possible,I presume your Surgeon wants to run more tests probably to evaluate the extent of this abscess or because he thinks that it could be something other than an abscess, such as scar tissue,a fibroadenoma, fat necrosis or other growth. I think your Surgeon is doing the right thing to further investigate this lump, before considering surgery.
I have had a thoracotomy on my right lung for the same thing 12 years ago. The abscess grew and ruptured, and emergency surgery followed. Why is my doc waiting and doing nothing with my history? He tells me sometimes the body "self heals" these lesions. Please advise.
i posted before. i had an abscessed tooth and the abscess spread into my cheek. my dentist put me on keflex but after 10 days there was still noticable swelling in my cheek. so now the dentist has put me on a stronger antibiotic. when i woke up this morning i felt a very large "bubble" on my inside cheek.
I'm afraid I'm about to have my first abscess rupture and I am terrified. My doctor told me to just call the office if it happens but what do I do in the meantime? It is so painful and red, it hurts with just the movement of walking. I've read some horrifying stories about abscesses and what happens when they rupture.
I returned to the ER the following day and had the packing removed for the final time and then was told to have a follow up visit with either my primary care doctor or dermotologist to make sure it's healing properly. I believe that this abscess was cause by a pair of underwear that was too tight, cutting off the circulation to a gland that lies right outside the crease of the thigh.
For 2 weeks I have been dealing with a very painful abscess on my ear, where after alot of research and several trips to a local medical clinic and ER, I have found that what I have is an abscess in the Preauricular pit/sinus. I have been given 3 rounds of antibiotics, one of which I am still taking (Clindamyacin). I have yet to see any improvement from taking the antibiotics, so I went to the ER yesterday where they attempted to do and Incision and Drainage procedure.
I would have the doc look at it in case there is infection inside. If the strength of the site is compromised a wound can be pulled apart even much later. I once had an abdominal incision abscess and it nearly turned into gangrene. I'd call the doc at least, and if the drainage is not clear but like pus and/or has a bad odor, I would treat it with urgency.
I recently got an abscess on my forearm. It formed for four days before I was able to see a doctor. After having the pus drained, I had to pack my wound with gauze so that the wound heals from the inside out. This is supposed to prevent any future collections of pus to appear in the infected area. However, I experience a lot of pain during packing. Having to stuff your open wound with eight inches of gauze every morning is most times unbearable.
It will swell and go down, and when it swells it has to be putting a lot of pressure on his brain Could this be all caused from an abscess? And how dangerous is it to have this abscess? I think he should see someone other then his family doctor, he sent him to a PT for his headaches.
I had an upper back molar extracted 2 days ago because it had an abscess. It was horribly painful and I made an emergency appointment with a dentist that I didn't entirely trust because I needed some immediate relief. The dentist's office was kind of dirty and a little seedy. The healing process seems to be going fine, however, I'm concerned because the dentist didn't prescribe me with any antibiotics.
I have an abscess that developed in my underarm and went through 5 iterations of infection, lancing, draining, antibiotics over an 8 week period, before finally going to a surgeon to get some relief. I had surgery 4 weeks ago where he removed a golf ball size cyst from the area. Since then have been back in the ER 2 more times for more lancing, draining, antibiotics. The surgeon keeps saying, its left over infection and it will heal eventually.
So I have severe hypochondria (health anxiety) and I am so so scared of getting a brain infection/brain abscess. I have heard one of the ways of this happening is by an infection in the ear. Now about a month ago I had Otitis Externa (outer ear infection) which was really painful and took about 2 weeks to completely clear up. I have really itchy ears at the moment because I have eczema inside so I am hoping thats all it is.
Having no idea what was wrong I went to the doctors and was put on amoxcillin (they weren't sure what was wrong as the abscess isn't visible, it is really high up under my lip and quite large). Some of my swelling has gone down since and the pain has completely stopped, although obviously the abscess still causes discomfort because of the pressure, does this mean my front tooth has died? It has changed in colour, it's now slightly greyish.
I am so distraught and discouraged how did u deal with this? What should I expect ? Any tips for care and healing would be great.
I just had an abscess open and it is draining red blood primarily. Is this normal? Should I put a call into my breast surgeon to be on the safe side? My regular abscesses are the regular pus with blood mixed in at times, but never just blood. Can anyone help?
Has anyone experiecned this issue. It is sometimes called a subareola abscess. This is a chronic condition- I have had 3 surgeries to removed the abscess because of the pain associated with it. It is back again and my last surgery was in November. I quit smoking because that is what my one doctor to me the was the ONLY cause and that is I quit smoking it will stop them from returning 100% of the time.
He did some measurements and came to the conclusion that I have a healing fistula but an infection under the tooth, but it doesn't show up on the x-ray. If the fistula heals completely, the infection could grow and I will face a bout with swelling and pain and then I will have to get the tooth removed... So, apparently it is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. I am referred to see an endo whenever I get the chance (aka insurance & money). Well, curiosity kills the cat.
I had a sore on my gum several weeks ago that filled like an abscess, although it wasn't in any way painful. I gently pressed the sore and it drained. Since then, I have had to press it to drain it every 2-3 days. I hadn't realised how much time had passed but it must be at least 6 weeks now. The sore is in front of a tooth that has a cavity in the jaw bone below as a result of an infection when the tooth was filled many years ago.
