Abilify for trichotillomania

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify for trichotillomania

abilify

Avatar f tn I had to get to the point where even if I wanted to pull there was no way for me to pull because I had my head covered up. I have stopped now and my hair has grown tremendously with no bald spots. Everynow and then I get the urge to pull but its ALOT less than before. You can seek help but personally I think that its a self disipline thing. I was tired of doing that too myself and tired of having low self esteem behind it. You can do it but it will take hard work and discipline.
Avatar f tn My dosage was increased gradually to 5 mg, split and taken twice a day, for trichotillomania (an impulse disorder in which I pull out my hair). It seemed to work pretty well at first; I was able to control my urges to pull really well. In January 2012, after 5-6 weeks on the Abilify, I stopped cold-turkey fearing I was pregnant (which I wasn't). I now realize this was EXTREMELY STUPID to do, but at the time, no one had warned me not to do this.
553947 tn?1215306493 hey! i have a similar problem. i'm thirteen and since maybe.. december/january i've had the terrible urge to pull out my hair. i had a huge bald spot and my hair takes a while to grow, so i was mortified. it's called trichotillomania, and there are lots of methods to help stop it! for growing back your lashes, i'd recommend an eyelash/eyebrow castor oil serum. i don't pick my eyelashes but theyre naturally short, and when i started using a serum, they grew in no time :).
Avatar f tn t much, but my understanding this drug is only officially approved a last-ditch antidepressant for those for whom nothing else worked. I assume there are good reasons for this limited approval. (Keep in mind doctors can use these meds for anything they want once they're approved, but knowing what they're approved for gives some information on what studies showed). As to that particular side effect, any drug that affects the brain can make one sedated or the opposite, overstimulated.
Avatar f tn I used to pull my eyelases out but for the last several years it has been my pubic hair. I have sores and scars. Let me know of a dermatoligist or professional who UNDERSTANDS THIS DISORDER.
Avatar n tn There is a name for this behaviour, it is called trichotillomania. Google it to learn about it, and then try to relate it back to the autism to see what could be causing it. Eg. how is school going, is she about to move school? Does she show alot of anxiety or stress?
Avatar f tn s hair is called Trichotillomania. It is an anxiety disorder. I might suggest you google this phrase to learn more about this issue - "children and trichotillomania". You should be able to find lots of information on the internet. It might be wise to mention this to your daughter's pediatrician on your next visit. I hope this helps ...
1190847 tn?1287363025 with psychotherapy and possible medications like antidepressants. The causes for Trichotillomania can include genetics or neuorchemical imbalances, so if you are having issues with anxiety then pulling your hair could very well be caused by the anxiety. The anxiety may have caused it, but again the hair pulling is another disorder that developed and also needs to be treated. Just like how a lot of people with anxiety problems also have OCD. Both disorders need to be treated.
569026 tn?1216982293 Taken several SSRIs in the past for anxiety. Adderall XR for ADD, Wellbutrin too. I have been seeing a therapist for about 4 months and he had me go for a psychiatry evaluation a few days ago. The two concrred that I am "complex" and could be a combination of BiPolar 2, Adult ADD and even...Borderline Personality Disorder (god I hate that name). Anyhow, one of the main symptoms we all agreed upon was the mood swings.
20050727 tn?1489133390 I already know that I have anxiety OCD and (more-likely than not), trichotillomania. I'm just not sure as to what step I should take next. I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to go to a psychiatrist for this sort of thing, but how does that even work? Can somebody that's either been through this process or is at least well informed on it pleeeaaase tell me what I should do?
Avatar m tn Abilify is actually an antipsychotic drug that has anti-depressant properties. Usually Abilify is used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and as an adjunct therapy (add on therapy) for major depression. The treatment prescribed depends on your psychiatrist’s assessment of your case. However, the dose prescribed is the lowest for the drug. Treatment for depression usually begins with a low dose of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Some doctors prescribe benzodiazepines too.
Avatar f tn I have and it is still unclear...She is up for another doctor vistit tomorrow... The first one has no idea.. He feels like it maybe a form of OCD....I am still lost on the issue..

Avatar n tn After doing much research I realize how hard this is for all of those who suffer from it, and my heart breaks for anyone who has this disorder. My thoughts for you are to never give up, and do what is necessary to heal yourself. I know my road is long with my daughter, but we have to do all we can.
585414 tn?1288941302 Weight gain and the potential of diabetes is a potential for all currently available antipsychotics. Abilify has the least potential to cause this. Abilify and Geodon are activating and can make some people feel anxious. As for Fanapt and Saphris they are newly released and are clinically similar to Abilify but that doesn't mean they will have the exact same profile.
Avatar n tn I think you should visit a dr and tell him/her about your compulsive eyelash pulling. I used to do the same thing. I pulled eyelashes, eyebrows and hair. It was when I was a pre-teen and all through my 20's. I sometimes still pull my eyelashes but not too often so I know when I'm under stress when I do it. I believe it is an OCD called trichotillomania. I never got "help" for it because it basically went away on its own.
Avatar m tn There is a certain medical condition where people pull their hair out. Please seek help for this. You do not need to be ashamed. You have a medical condition, just like diabetes or arthritis. If you had those conditions, you would seek help. You need to seek help for this as well. Please make an appointment with your family doctor first. If he/she thinks you need to see a specialist, they will they you. Please do this for yourself. Keep us posted.
