Abilify and blood sugar

Common Questions and Answers about Abilify and blood sugar

abilify

Avatar n tn t recall gaining weight. However my blood sugar soared up to on an average to over 30o fasting blood sugar. I am diagnosed with diabetes type2. I strongly recommend to at least be cautious of you're diabetic. Plus discuss with your prescribing doctor if you're diagnosed with diabetes, especially type2.
Avatar m tn I am suppose to get my blood checked and your doctor should jave requested that for you too. To check you sugar levels and cholesterol, because if you are suspectible Abilify could cause a spike in those levels.
Avatar f tn My doc put me on abilify yesterday and warned me that it can cause serious blood sugar problems. This scares me because I have a family history of diabetes. Can a healthier diet and excercise plan help offset this possible side effect, or does it just happen anyway, no matter what your diet? Also, is there any other things I need to be warned about or watch for while I start this new medication? I am already taking lamictal as well.
Avatar f tn Do I still have to worry about high blood sugar levels? BTW Ive been off it for at least 5 months and I have not had any problems psych wise.
13126824 tn?1428652469 I take Zoloft and Abilify for bipolar disorder. My sugar levels were heightened due to Abilify, but I am now taking Metfforman to level out my sugar level because Abilify has the ability to heighten sugar levels. I am not a diabetic. Does cholesterol have anything to do with this cramping?
Avatar f tn Hi The only one reason i can think of right now, is that abilify may cause you to have high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). This is why they tell you to talk to your doctor if you develop any sign of this such as increased thirst or urination, excessive hunger, or weakness. More crucial if you are already diabetic you should regularly check your blood sugar levels.
1565420 tn?1304572548 Hair loss is not listed as a side effect of Abilify. I would address this right away with an Endocrinologist, as it may be related to your thyroid which can also cause anxiety and depression. Hair coming out in small clumps is a symptom of an underlying condition and blood work can determine what this is. Don't stop the Abilify, but make the prescribing doctor aware of what you're experiencing........
Avatar f tn These may be signs of a serious condition called tardive dyskinesia (TD), which may be permanent If you have diabetes, or risk factors for diabetes (for example, obesity, family history of diabetes), or unexpected increases in thirst, urination, or hunger, your blood sugar should be monitored.
739988 tn?1386672969 I have been on BP meds for several years. About a year ago I was diagnosed as diabetic. I've heard that the zyprexa and others like it can cause high blood sugar. Diabetes also runs on both sides of my family. Are there any mood stabilizers out there that don't cause Diabetes? I like the Zyprexa because it works really well for me. I guess I am just wondering if there is anyone else out there like me?
Avatar n tn There is a connection with taking Abilify and acne .
899491 tn?1243773627 A friend of mine had pre-diabetes from Abilify and he went on a healthy diet and lost 40 pounds and that passed. If someone needs general weight loss or diet advice their doctor can usually advise them. If it becomes severe and a medication change doesn't help it then its best to see a nutritionist. First find out what medication your psychiatrist will prescribe and what the risk of weight gain is and see from there.
1348086 tn?1370783185 If your thyroid levels were checked by your GP, then you need to have them redone by and Endocrinologist. They do a more extensive test, which is more accurate. They say many GP's aren't sure how to interpret the test results accurately, and my GP was one who didn't. Your endocrine system impacts every major organ in the body, and if one thing is not working properly, it can throw many things out of whack.
1348086 tn?1370783185 Well, I know it's not my blood sugar. I keep a close eye on that. I am also having "weak" spells. Maybe it is anxiety. Thanks M4.
497950 tn?1255863927 m on Zoloft and Depakote - I still cycle but not as badly - I feel like a fat whale and have gained about 5 lbs (not that much really) I really liked how Lexapro and Depakote improved my sleep and lowered my blood sugar readings (I am also diabetic) but one dosage of the Lexapro gave me dysphoric mania and that is not good and a higher dosage gave me "pure" mania and I couldn't sleep and was quite crude SO.... Hope all goes well...
Avatar n tn ) Maintenance doses of xyprexa are causing too many other medical problems. Rhabdomylisis, elevated blood sugar, fatty liver and raised enzymes, tremors. Lots of people have died from taking xyprexa. The psychiatrist wants to try abilify. It can also cause similar side effects. Just not as bad. I started giving my wife sam e after stopping xyprexa. Her mood and other physical symptoms are better. I want her to just take the sam e and to re-start taking her cholesterol medicine again.
712802 tn?1274645485 I take Cymbalta and then I was also put on abilify shortly before my family and I went on vacation to Disneyworld and it was the worst time I ever had! I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin! I was so agitated and could not sleep. I would pace at night! I did get off abilify when I got back and am just on Cymbalta now and am better but I am experiencing things like headaches and heart palpitations so may be getting off Cymbalta, too.
Avatar m tn This led to me getting scared and confused about irrational things. I was taken to a hospital and put on a psychotropic drug called Abilify. I was on the drug for 4 months and then tapered off of it under doctors direction. I've been off of it now for almost two months. I was on only a low dose for the final 2 months (5 mg) Unfortunately I'm still having symptoms of muscle ridgidity and lightheadedness, which I first remember having while on the drug.
Avatar f tn I am currently on Cymbalta, Valium, and six days ago started Abilify after discontinuation of Depakote 500 mg daily due to weight gain of 50 pounds. I've written on here before about this but now would really appreciate some more feedback from anyone on Abilify. I just started it and have already gained five pounds, according to the scales. I am so frustrated that I'm about ready to just get off everything.
Avatar n tn I was a coach, during my time with the team, One of our guys had low blood sugar and was in W.M superstore, He grabbed something to drink and eat and was charged with shoplifting. To the ignorance of the police they did not believe him at the time. He finally had charges dropped, but the general public needs to kow about these things. whose to say it might help alot of people out. My husband is Type-1, insulin depndt. there is alot to deal with and people need to understand how to deal with it.
Avatar f tn I can only add the standard advice to make sure to get the blood tests each month and be careful to drink enough water and as that an antipsychotic together can cause weight gain to monitor sugar intake. For myself it was a bit difficult with cognitive blunting and I found Lamictal more tolerable but each person is different. There's a lot more advice but that would be on the websites linked up and you should ask your psychiatrist as well.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with BP II with more noticeable depression as well. I'm actually on a combo of Wellbutrin/Abilfy and it's the PERFECT combo for me. I was on lamictal and it made me crazy and had awful side effects. I've never taken Prozac or Lithium, as I've found a combo that works for me. I take 250mg Wellbutrin twice a day and 15mg of Abilify. I also take an anti-anxiety med and sleeping pills as needed.
Avatar f tn I have only started the Abilify so far on day 3 … I was supposed to start together but I dropped the pristiq bottle and pills fell on floor now because of contamination ocd I can’t take them and insurance won’t pay for a refill yet so doctor says just take the Abilify for now , I’m noticing it is helping me to change my behavior versus the ssri just kinda helped me manage my existing behaviors but never had courage or motivation to change my behaviors so I’m hoping that’s where Abilify will come
Avatar m tn t spiral into anything worse the best thing to do is eat a healthy diet and if weight gain appears to be getting worse to discuss this with your psychiatrist and they can tell you what to do from there as well as getting a yearly blood test which should include blood sugar levels. The metabolic changes that cause weight gain can become permanent but standard precautionary steps can prevent this.
Avatar n tn I am on Abilify 10mg..and have been for a while and I have no noticed any weight gain. Are you on any other meds? It may just depends on who you are.
