I don't know why you would take both. Promethazine is another form of medication for nausea and it's side effects are HORRIBLE. Zofran is a first class drug (I've been using it for several months) and I don't see any reason for you to be on both. I would definitely question your doctor and demand some form of explanation. Plus always remember, just because it is prescribed, doesn't mean you have to take it.
Zofran is better during pregnancy, I don't like promethazine as much because it has some bad long term side effects, and zofran is more effective. They use it for chemo patients. Let's be clear about form of promethazine as it comes in a liquid mainly for cough medicine promethazine w/codeine (promethazine w/codeine syrup is highly abused in our country) plain promethazine syrp, promethazine vc syrp and pill form.
I would be put on iv fluids and zofran I was put on a zofran pump at 15 weeks till about 24 weeks! I still have sickness at 34 weeks I take one zofran odt a day and my little man is health as can be! I lost 30 pounds within 10 weeks but now past my starting weight! Its hard being so sick but so worth it! Good luck hope you start feeling better soon! (: and as for all the ads on zofran linked to birth defects unfortunately any medication we take while pregnant can cause them!
Hi girls! I have HG and I want the say it is very hard right now I know! I began getting sick at 5 weeks and was put on zofran it didn't help I stayed taking another medication along with it I still ended up in the hospital 5 times. I was then put on a zofran pump at 15 weeks was on that until 25 weeks. I was taken off and was much better but I am now 34 weeks and I'm still having to take one odt zofran a day! But I tell you this so you know you are not the only one!
Love it. Ive used it for migraine nausea and vomiting too. I personally haven't had any side effects. I love that it works faster than promethazine. I would always throw up the promethazine bc it takes alot longer than zofran.
I think you need to have a serious discussion with your doctor, considering long term potential benefits and the seriousness of the side effects. Many people have trouble tolerating the treatment and if you feel it's too much to take, then by all means stop it. I'm not an advocate of ECT, but my point is simply that in the bigger picture you can't simply write it off as "bad.
Has anyone taken Zofran and what are some of your side effects? My morning sickness has been horrible...the worst ever. I am usually in bed all day and feeling like I can't do anything. My doctor initially prescribed Diclegis, but it doesn't help me. It made me sleep all day, causing me to skip meals and drinks. It also have me bad headaches. So I asked my DR to please let me try something else. At this point, I'm in tears because I can't keep anything down. Dr calls in Zofran.

Zoloft (sertraline) is used to treat depression, panic disorders and anxiety. Nausea is one the side effects of the drug. If Ondansetron is not helping there are other drugs like antacids and proton pump inhibitors that can give relief. You can ask your Doctor for a change of prescription. Also dietary modification like eating a bland non-spicy food, avoiding alcohol and smoking will help.

I think 80% of woman go through that. I couldn't eat or drink anything either and lost 15 pounds. What worked for me was eating a piece of a corn muffin when I woke up or during the day.. it helped ALOT it was the only thing I could keep down. Also apples you can ask you're doctor for odt zofran.. its for nausea its a tab that dissolves in you're mouth and they have all diff flavors. That helped me a bit.. but it didn't get rid of the problem completely. Also no sodas or juice..
I took zofran and didn't feel any side effects from it, but I was only taking it on an as-needed basis. It's hard to tell if those symptoms are side effects or just pregnancy lol I think it may just he normal but I'd call and ask my doctor and he/she might recommend something for it to help you out.
My doctor gave me a Zofran substitute because the original was said to cause horrible side effects to the baby. But of course nothing is perfect and not worth risking my baby, so I stopped taking the substitute and have just been dealing with the throwing up (I'm now 33 weeks and I've thrown up since the first few days of being pregnant. It ***** but its not impossible to deal with).
I started having nausea/vomiting/diarrhea after a trip visiting family in March of 09. It lasted until May then went away. This year it came back again only worse it seems. The nusea is continuous. I was given Zofran ODT to help with that but it doesn't last through the two doses I am supposed to take. I was also given Nexium to see if it would help with any kind of acid reflux or ulcer. I haven't really noticed a change with that.
