Common Questions and Answers about Zofran and serotonin

zofran

1201433 tn?1328997637 Ondansetrone was developed and first marketed by GlaxoSmithKline as Zofran. It is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist used mainly as an antiemetic (to treat nausea and vomiting), often following chemotherapy. Its effects are thought to be on both peripheral and central nerves. Ondansetron reduces the activity of the vagus nerve, which deactivates the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata, and also blocks serotonin receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Avatar f tn Some of them have tried other anti nausea meds and Zofran seems to work for most people. I have used it to manage nausea after chemo treatments. Zofran Why is this medication prescribed? Zofran (ondansetron) is used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Ondansetron is in a class of medications called serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists.
1750760 tn?1411482476 The medication blocks serotonin, a chemical produced by the body that is associated with nausea and vomiting. Serotonin has many effects in the body and has several receptors where it can bind. Zofran blocks serotonin at a specific type of receptor (the 5-HT3 receptor).
585414 tn?1288941302 Zofran is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Zofran reduces the activity of the vagus nerve, which activates the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata, and also blocks serotonin receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. It has little effect on vomiting caused by motion sickness, and does not have any effect on dopamine receptors or muscarinic receptors.
2147300 tn?1369689688 yes some bad days but with this forum and the drrugs recommended by it help. Doc had no prob with zofran and highly encouraged this support forum. Cean, I took 4 mg last night before inc and it helped. I did have a constipation problem this morning that did no good for my golf swing and am curious if the zofran has anything to do with this. Will see doc about AD and mention conflicts with PI. I am not a pill guy on a regular basis but have drawer full of them.
Avatar m tn I am very reactive to medications, anaphylaxis due to zofran for example, and I am just hoping that these are normal side effects of the medication. Any experience that you all have had with Zoloft would be very beneficial!

Once he is on it for a few doses he should feel better and less nauseated. It does not have to be taken with food.
2062505 tn?1331089288 However, the treatment was doable and I finished Incivek on Dec. 19th. (Still on the Interferon and Riba) The fat can be annoying to say the least. I always kept a lot of Greek yogurt on hand (the high fat kind, not the lo fat). I also had eggnog (it was near the holidays). 2 ounces of chedder cheese or Havarti cheese will do the trick. Ice cream (not low fat) is also good. Brautwurst has a lot of fat in it. One avacado contains enough fat for an Incivek dose.
Avatar f tn Taking zofran can cause birth defects, and a serious, life threatening reaction in the mother, called serotonin syndrome. My PCP told me today to use it sparingly, if I can't stop using it in entirety. http://www.****.com/fertility_cares_blog/fda-warns-against-zofran-use-in-pregnancy/ This is just 1 of the articles that I read that talks about this.
Avatar f tn s or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and SNRIs, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors do not actually increase the amount of serotonin molecules in the brain. SSRI’s are thought to block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin by certain nerve cells in the brain. This theoretically leaves more serotonin available in the brain. However if you have low serotonin to begin with these medications either will not work well, or work for a while then "poop out".
747988 tn?1396536878 The research is on using Zofran for fatigue in patients who have Hep C and chronic liver disease. They are not talking about fatigue following treatment with Interferon, although they do mention the fatigue seen during treatment.
Avatar f tn Has anyone used Remeron for depression, while taking Maxalt for their migraines? I have migraines about every other day, and take 5mg maxalt for them. I was just given Remeron for depression, as the doc said i cannot take any SSRI's because of serotonin syndrome. I cannot find and interactions for Remeron, but just wondering if anyone else has tried these together. Any info appreciated.
1201433 tn?1328997637 I also am on Zofran for nausea and vomiting. I take 8 mg every 8 hours, usually about an hour before I take my meds. You will need a prescription for it. With Zofran, do not wait until you get nauseated. Ondansetron works by blocking the 5HT3 receptors that are found in the brain and gut. This prevents the nausea messages being sent from these areas to the vomiting centre.
Avatar f tn I take 8 mg every 8 hours and I take it about an hour before I plan to eat and take my pills. Zofran blocks the chemicals that cause the nausea. "It is likely that Zofran works in the small intestine, but it may also work in the brain. The medication blocks serotonin, a chemical produced by the body that is associated with nausea and vomiting. Serotonin has many effects in the body and has several receptors where it can bind.
Avatar f tn So again, were you diagnosed as having serotonin syndrome? And sex and exercise have nothing to do with this, serotonin syndrome usually occurs when someone mixes different drugs that target serotonin receptors, which to my knowledge Robitussin does not.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed me both and so far i have only taken the buspar. I have read taking both could cause serotonin syndrome and scared to take the doxepin. I take 15mg x 3 daily of buspar and was given 50 mg of doxepin to take at bedtime.
Avatar f tn In the brain without an ssri the body breaks down used serotonin with an enzyme and then makes more. With an ssri serotonin is directed to targeted receptor sites, which differ depending on the medication, and breakdown is prevented so the serotonin washes around longer in the targeted sites. Other sites, in turn, shut off because the brain doesn't see them as necessary anymore. You have the same amount of serotonin, it's just hanging around longer in the targeted receptors.
Avatar f tn Thanks so much for the info. I'm glad to hear you do not stop making serotonin and I know to go slow. I'm now at 2mg and still cutting slowly. It will take me quite a while to get to nothing. I have been working at this for about 2 years. Just in case you think I'm nuts, it is precisely because I stopped prozac at under 4 mg and it threw me into the worst depression I have ever known that I am going so slowly. Plus I have had a few events that had to put dropping on hold.
Avatar m tn There's no evidence anyone has more or less serotonin than anyone else. What ssris do is prevent the breakdown of serotonin so it soaks the neuron longer in it. This isn't the natural way the body acts, but these meds have helped many people. But whether you want to take them or not, or need them or not, is up to you. They won't cure you, they will only mitigate the symptoms you're having. If there is a cure, it's through therapy.
Avatar f tn If that does not work, then you probably need a prescription for Zofran which blocks the nausea and vomiting (which is caused by the drugs). Many of us used Zofran. It works very well for most of us. I took 8 mg every 8 hours for a few months. Don't let this go. It will snowball. If the phenergan does not work, then ask for Zofran. Zofran does not make you sleepy. Phenergan does. Phenergan is cheaper, but Zofran works better (in my opinion). It is used to treat the nausea from Chemo.
Avatar f tn If you took something else that increased serotonin, it could be dangerous, and cause what is called Serotonin Syndrome, which can be fatal. For that reason, amino acid remedies for opiate withdrawal symptom relief such as 5HTP and SAM-E, and anything else that may have a simular effect must be avoided. It can also cause sexual dysfunction. But it can also prevent premature ejaculation problems. Hey I'm not thinking that! LoL! Klonopin is a benzo as other have said.
Avatar f tn it is twice a day, i take for depression and hope to help on stop smoking and lossing weight and the Tramadol(not prescribed for me) 50mg taking for pain and hope weight loss. I do not even know if it is safe. buuuuuuuut anywaay. funny you are sunny66, I am mary66.......
Avatar f tn i was wondering if anyone had any bad reactions or anything good to say about either one.. and if it seem to make a difference with the serotonin and norepenphrine.. compared to just serotonin.. and did anyone else have headaches that affected there vision with depression??
